When we develop a job search plan, it’s important to track metrics in terms of what is vs. what’s outside of our control. By focusing on what you can control, you will hopefully, and realistically, attain the thing job offer you want that is outside your control.

Sometimes looking like a rockstar at a job interview is not just about how you answer the interviewer's questions. It's about the stellar questions YOU ask the interviewer.

Here are 10 sample questions to ask the interviewer in a job interview:

- Who would make the ideal candidate for this position – what are the characteristics of that person?
- How will the work I’ll be doing contribute to the organization’s mission?

- What were the best things about the last person who held this position?

- What are three ways I can contribute to the company beyond the job description?

- How can I best contribute to the department’s goals?

- How do you see me best contributing to the corporate culture and morale?

- What do you see as the biggest challenges of working here and how can I overcome those challenges?

- What is your vision for where the company or department will be in one year? In 3-5 years?

- How can I best help you and the team succeed?

- What is the plan for the business over the next five years?

When we optimize our #LinkedIn headline, we can get found and noticed by recruiters and hiring managers. Here’s how:

1. List all variations of the job titles you are going for. A sales rep might list Sales | Business Development | Account Management
2. Note what level you are at (Manager, Director, VP)

3. Include a short branding statement

4. Note any industry preferences

5. Capture special skills

6. Add an interesting fact – this will help you build rapport with the person when they call you.

7. Plan to use all 220 spaces – add more relevant keywords if there is available space.

Here are a few examples of putting it all together:

VP Sales | Business Development | Pharmaceuticals | Medical Devices | Drive sales growth for start-ups | Marathon Runner

#truestory - Many clients come to me with resumes that are TOO LONG and have TOO MUCH information. Here are some ways to SLIM DOWN your resume so it gets read!

First of all – resume length guidelines

✪ New grads – 1 page

✪ Seasoned professionals – 2 pages

✪ C-Level with long career history – try for 2 pages, unless you’d be leaving off important previous information

Strategies for shortening:

✓ Condense or even remove jobs older than 10-15 years

✓ Expand margins to .5” all the way around

✓ Lower font size to 10.5 – try using Calibri font.

✓ Shorten lines that go run by a few words.

✓ Pick and choose the most important accomplishments.

✓ Shorten the overview section for each job to 3-4 lines tops.

✓ Re-write text that is verbose. You can often say the same thing in fewer words.

✓ Remove everything that’s not related to the job you’re going for.

I'll never forget the dream job I thought I had locked down. And then ghosted. 


Four rounds of interviews. Met with the hiring manager twice. Presented to the team. 

Even had a final conversation with the VP where he said, "We're really excited about bringing you on board. You'll hear from us this week."

Four weeks later, No call. No email. Not even a generic rejection.

I followed up once. Then twice. Then realized I was chasing people who clearly didn't respect my time enough to send a two-sentence email.

Here's what made it worse: I'd turned down other interviews because I thought this was a done deal.

That experience taught me something I'll never forget: How a company treats you during the hiring process is exactly how they'll treat you as an employee.

And companies wonder why they can't attract top talent.

Here's the reality: Every person you ghost tells 10 other people about the experience.

If you're hiring: Send the email. Even if it's a template. Even if it's bad news.

Candidates deserve basic human decency, not radio silence.

And if you're job searching: Remember that ghosting tells you everything you need to know about that company.

You didn't dodge a bullet. You dodged a whole firing squad.

The most dangerous thing you can do at work is care more than they do.


I’ve watched smart, talented people give everything to a company that saw them as a line item.

-Extra hours nobody asked for. 
-Vacations never taken.

My client Jessica came to me after being passed over for a promotion three times in two years.

Same manager every time. Same excuse every time.

“You’re not quite ready yet.”

Meanwhile, she was training the people getting promoted over her. Running projects her manager took credit for.

She’d spent two years trying to prove herself to people who’d already decided not to see her value.

“Maybe I’m just not as good as I think I am,” she told me.

Here’s what I told her: You’re not the problem. You’re just at the wrong table.

We built her exit strategy. Updated her resume. Optimized her LinkedIn. Targeted companies where her skills would actually be valued.

Six weeks later, she had two offers. Both paid more than her current role. Both came with the title she’d been chasing for two years.

She took the better one and handed in her notice.

Her manager’s reaction? Genuine shock.

“We were planning to promote you next quarter.”

Sure they were.

Here’s what I’ve learned: The people who never saw your value don’t suddenly see it until they’re about to lose you. And by then it’s too late.

I’ve watched people stay in the wrong job because they were scared of being called a “job hopper.”


Not because they were happy.

Because someone told them that leaving too soon would ruin their career.

So they stayed.
