I enjoyed a great 10 year run in sales and sales management at BellSouth Mobility that became Cingular Wireless and is now AT&T. I started in major account sales; from there I went into national accounts, then was a pioneer in the early days of wireless data. 

I still have a Halliburton briefcase phone that had everything to make a "mobile office' for a laptop. It weighed about 25 pounds, with about an hour battery life, and couldn't do 1/10 of what an iPhone does today.

From there I went into sales management and climbed the ladder some more before deciding I was finished climbing the corporate ladder.

You know those year-end gatherings where something gets said that suddenly makes time stand still? When an ordinary comment transforms into an extraordinary moment?

Just yesterday, I was in conversation with MaryAnn Connor PhD, RN, NI-BC, CPHIMS, FAMIA, FHIMSS, when she shared such a moment from the past week. 

The story she told—and our subsequent exploration of it—has been playing on repeat in my mind, especially after receiving this Mitch Albom quote from my friend Robert Varga, JD, MBA this morning:

"𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨."

Here is Maryann's moment:

During a casual lunch with colleagues, someone turned to Maryann and said, "𝙔𝙤𝙪'𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨, 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙨!"

Let that sink in. What could have been a passing comment became a profound moment of revelation. 

I could see this acknowledgment had lodged deep within Maryann's spirit, so I asked her, "When you heard that, was it a surprise?"

Her response stopped me in my tracks. She paused, reflected, and said, 
"That's the kind of leader I wanted to be…but I wasn't sure I had that kind of impact."

Mind. Blown. 🤯

Here's a leader whose intention and aspiration had been quietly creating ripples she didn't know existed. 

It reminded me of the Japanese word "𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗼"—the curiosity about the impact you've had on others. 

I like to think of it as wondering: what moment might you have shared with someone that lingered long after the encounter, becoming a lesson or mindset they carry for a lifetime?

As we enter this season of reflection and gathering, perhaps it's the perfect time to consider:

🪄 Who has made ordinary moments magical in your life?
🙌 Whose shoulders have you been standing on?
🫆 What impact might you have had that you've never fully known?

If someone comes to mind as you read this, pause for a moment now to let them know of the impact they've had on you.

Maybe you see...
the connection between a father and son.
a moment of connection. 
someone offering another support and steadiness.  
trust in action. 
someone believing in you. 
something you can't quite name—but you feel it.

I noticed something I missed earlier when I was looking at this snow globe: 
One reaches down. The other reaches up. 
𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝘆. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀:

We live in both positions. Sometimes you're the one reaching down—offering steadiness, presence, belief as a gift. 
Sometimes you're the one reaching up—needing support, needing assurance, needing to know you're not alone.

Both are 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝘂𝘁-𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. Both transform you.

When you reach down for someone, you remember your capacity to matter. When you reach up and someone steadies you, you remember you're worthy of care.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰. 𝗪𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗽. 𝗪𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:

Look around. Are you reaching down for someone right now? Or do you need to reach up?

Either way—be honest about it. Then take that step.

One small gesture. One reaching motion. One moment of connection.
That's all it takes.

And You Still Think There's Something to Be Grateful For?

This might be one of those years when it seems difficult, perhaps even impossible to get into the holiday spirit. 

And yet, we crave it.

We’ve felt it before—those warm and wonder-filled moments.
So how do we get that feeling back?

Good news: hope for the holidays is within reach. 

This season, I want to invite you to experience these five holiday moments:

- Magical Moments
- Small Moments 
- Brave Moments
- Breakthrough Moments
- Shared Moments

This campaign is inspired by this quote from Mitch Albom: 

“There are years you think about for moments and there are moments you think about for years.” 

What is a “moment?” 

When time seems to slow, or stop altogether, and we experience a feeling, something special, perhaps sacred. It touches the depths of our soul and elevates our mood. It’s metaphysical and physiological. Whatever they are, we need moments to move us.  

Take a moment. 

I hope that as you pause to reflect on the images and words we  share this week, you feel the power of wonder and discover the promise of healing this season still has to offer.

We've got another moment for you to consider.

Will you look at this moment? It's often easier to look away from moments like this. I'm inviting you to step into the moment.

What do you notice? What stirs in you?

Maybe it's the kneeling. The quietness. The reverent honoring of someone or something that's gone.

Maybe it's the solitude of grief.

Sit with it.

Here's what I know to be true in 2025: 

Most of us are grieving something right now. I know I am.

- Maybe you're grieving a job that was suddenly gone. A paycheck that stopped coming. The identity you wore for years, that's now unraveling.
- Maybe you're grieving a home you had to leave. The security you thought was solid. The version of your life you thought you'd always have.
- Maybe you're grieving an empty chair or bed. A relationship that ended. A person who's no longer here. A voice you wish could pick up when you call. 
- A dream that turned into a nightmare.
- Maybe you're grieving the version of yourself you thought you'd always be.

All of it is loss. All of it matters. All of it is real!

Here's what brave is:

Showing up anyway. Honoring what was. Letting yourself feel the weight of it. Speaking it aloud instead of pretending everything is okay.

That's bravery.

My invitation:

Identify what you grieving. 
Not in a way you need to explain to anyone else. Not to justify or minimize. Just name the loss you're carrying right now.

Hold it. Don't rush past it. Let yourself feel it. Name it, even if just to yourself.

Then, if you can, find one small way to honor it. Speak its name. Acknowledge it's real. Let yourself grieve.

Because your grief matters. And so does your courage in feeling it.

You are not alone in this. You matter!

My mum still tells people how "intense" I was as a kid...turning my bunkbed into a fake business... making fake money so my brothers could spend it at that fake business...

I think my parents thought something was wrong with me... I was always too much.

When you're "too much", too passionate, too ambitious, too excited you make people uncomfortable.

You obsess about your idea until 4am while everyone wants to go to bed. 

You cry at films that aren't even sad. 

You text long rambly paragraphs when everyone else sends thumbs up emojis. 

You care about things that seem ridiculous to care about.

After 33 years of being told I was "too much"... I realised that the people who tell you you're too much are usually living at half volume.

And not because they're bad people... often because someone, somewhere, convinced them that being palatable was more important than being themselves.

The people I treasure most are all "too much". Too emotional, too ambitious, too weird, too creative, too intense, too easily inspired, too many ideas, too honest...🤣

They can all make simple things excessive, interesting, find stories in nature, find business ideas in music...

So if you're reading this feeling like you should shrink yourself to fit - please don't. 

The world doesn't need another beige person making careful things and playing it safe. It needs you - it needs ALL of us, at full volume, with all your weird edges and sometimes exhausting passion.

Some people won't be able to handle it, and that's a really important way to filter and find YOUR people... change the people before you change yourself!

And when you find your people, they'll be so happy that you're exactly the amount of YOU that you are.

So so glad to have found so many of MY people! ❤️👊🏾

As we move through this season of Thanksgiving, I’m reminded that gratitude is not just a personal practice but also a leadership strategy.
