Wise words for those considering a change.

I took a pay cut to move into a new industry.

The result?

12 months later I 3x'd my previous salary.

I’ve had jobs that look great on paper but still felt like I was in the wrong role.

There's a Japanese concept called Ikigai - it means "reason for being."

It's basically the intersection of what you're great at, what energizes you, what pays well, and what fits your life.

I've adapted it into a career framework I use with clients to find that sweet spot.

It's four overlapping questions:

→ What are you trusted to deliver? (Your zone of mastery)
→ What would you do even if it didn't pay? (What drives you)
→ What's actually in demand? (Market reality)
→ What fits your life right now? (Not just your ambition)

The magic happens at the intersection.

That's where you get focus, clarity, and motivation without burning out.

If you're a student, here's my top tip for your career:

Get an internship in the industry you want to work in.

For some reason, this seems to be the gold standard. 

There are even entry level job posts that require you to have an internship experience before you can get it!

Unless you're going to grad school,
grades < internship.

This is the number one thing I wish I could go back and teach myself.

Should I get Certifications as a Mechanical or Electrical Engineer?


I repeatedly see among early career engineers struggling to land a job turn to certifications to solve their problem.

The problem with that is that just like your diploma, certifications are a piece of (digital) paper, and don't actually show what you can do or the value you can drive at a company.

They are good for learning, and further developing skills, or benchmarking skills.

If you understand why you're getting a certification, and it isn't really a financial burden, by all means, go and get the certification.

Honestly, I learned more than I thought I would preparing for the CSWP exam.

What's even better is that I was able to take what I learned and immediately apply it to my work, so that learning could become experience.

Will getting these certifications change my career or open more doors than before?  Maybe, but it's hard to say.

Did I learn something and get better at Solidworks (not necessarily design)?
100%!

Happy to be chipping away at the New Year's goals.

(If you look at the dates, they technically happened last year.  But they happened after I wrote down my 2026 goals.  Maybe that's cheating, I like to think its proactive.)

How do I bridge the gap between no experience, and having enough to apply?


This is one of my favorite questions, and has honestly been the backbone of my successful career.

I'm not a fan of any mindset that takes away your control over your outcomes.

"Waiting for someone to give you experience so you can get experience," is one of those mindsets.

The fastest way to get experience with something is doing that thing.

If a company wants me to have experience with X for a role, I'll go and get experience with X before applying/interviewing.

This way, during the interview, when they ask about my experience with X, I can tell them about what I've actually done.

This is a million times better than thinking or saying "I haven't done that, but I think I can."

Action, specifically the correct actions, lead to results.

Sitting around waiting usually leads to more sitting around waiting.
