I know this isn’t “new” news, but it sums up exactly what keeps going wrong in UK biotech, and it deserves another look.

Back in early November, the story broke:

In 2023, a small weight-loss spin-out from Imperial College London was acquired by US biotech Metsera for $114M.

Fast-forward two years…

That same UK-born science sparked a $10BN takeover war between Pfizer and Novo Nordisk.

Ten.
Billion.

Built on research developed in a UK lab.
By a UK professor.
Using UK public funding.
Inside a UK university.

And somehow the actual economic value is being captured thousands of miles away.

To add another layer of irony?

Pfizer is now calling Novo the “foreign interloper” trying to snatch an American company.

Amazing how quickly British science becomes “American” when the bidding hits ten figures.

This is the pattern we never break:

Discovery? UK.
Early platform work? UK.
Academic excellence? UK.
Funding constraints? UK.
Early acquisition? US.
Billion-dollar upside? Definitely not UK.

We talk endlessly about being a “science superpower.”

But a superpower that can’t hold onto its own breakthroughs long enough to scale them… isn’t one.

This isn’t about Metsera.
Or semaglutide competitors.
Or one university.

It’s a warning light:

The UK still hasn’t solved the gap between discovery and commercial scale.

Until we fix that, the story doesn’t change:

We create the breakthroughs.
Other countries build the companies.
They take the upside.
We clap from the sidelines.
