I'm Richard van der Blom, Dutch living with my Argentinian wife and German doodle in Spain. Pearl Jam, Padel and Gin-Tonic lover.

Most entrepreneurs have different audiences in their email list. 
And they treat them like one.

A while back, I ran a promotion for a new workshop series. 
Good product. Decent list. One email campaign to everyone.

Results? Mediocre. Not what I expected. 
The kind of launch where you know the problem wasn't the product but the message hitting the wrong people in the wrong way.

So when I launched my Mastermind Sessions, I decided to do it differently.
Partly because I'd been going deep on AI tools lately. 
For months I have been testing what AI tools and solutions actually move the needle versus what just looks impressive in a demo. 

And somewhere in that process, I finally stopped skimming the surface of a tool I'd had for years. I'd been using ActiveCampaign as a basic email sender. 
Turns out I'd been sitting on a lot more than that.

I mapped my three audiences first. 
Then I built a separate sequence for each, using ActiveCampaign's Active Intelligence feature to identify which segments were most likely to convert before I even pressed send.

Here's how that worked for me:

→ Longer emails, case-study led, focused on transformation over time.

Newsletter subscribers 
→ Warm but uncommitted. High volume, lower purchase intent. 
→ Sequence angle: Social proof + urgency + a single, frictionless CTA. 
→ Shorter. Punchier. Hard deadline. No detours.

Existing clients 
→ They know me. They trust me. They deserved a personal touch first. 
→ Sequence angle: Early access framing, not a sales email. 
→ I manually tagged this group. The automation only fired after that tag. They converted at 3x the rate of the other lists.

What shifted the whole launch wasn't just better copy but knowing 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 segment to prioritise, what each group needed to hear, and when to send it. Active Intelligence flagged the highest-intent contacts across all three lists before I'd sent a single email.

Segmented campaigns generate up to 760% more revenue than batch-and-blast. That stat has been floating around for years. Most people nod at it and go back to sending the same email to everyone.

After 15 years, I have 8,000 followers on LinkedIn.

Given my activity and expertise, that's nothing.

I know what the LinkedIn gurus think when they see that number.
They laugh. They assume I'm doing something wrong.

What they forget?

I've consistently generated business for my company for 15 years.
Not by chasing trends.
By building trust.

High reach with low trust is the most expensive mistake in B2B.

You can have 100,000 followers.
But if none of them would put their reputation on the line for you, what do you actually have?

Impressions don't sign contracts.
Likes don't refer clients.
Trust does.

I stopped measuring my success by follower count years ago.

Now I measure it by something simpler:
Would my audience bet their career on my advice?

If the answer is yes, the numbers don't matter.
If the answer is no, no amount of followers will save you.

What matters more to you — reach or trust?

Discipline isn't something someone gives you. 
It's something you own.

I learned this by finishing 75 Hard twice.

No coach checked on me.
No app reminded me.
No boss held me accountable.

Just me and the commitment I made to myself.

And this is exactly why most Employee Advocacy programs fail.

Companies try to rent their employees' voices.
They push corporate content and expect people to share it.
They build programs on control, not ownership.

It doesn't work.

What does work?

Helping employees own their reputation.

When you train people for their career — not your marketing reach — something shifts.
They show up because it benefits them, not because they have to.

I call this Employeeship.

The employee comes first.
Their employability comes first.
Their personal brand comes first.

And paradoxically, that's when the company benefits most.

This will be one of the biggest shifts in the next two years.

Organisations that give ownership will attract and keep the best people.
Those who keep trying to control will watch them leave.

The question isn't whether your employees will build their reputation.

It's whether they'll do it with you or without you.
