I landed in New York on Monday.
By Wednesday, I’d been reminded what optimism actually feels like.

Not even the “big city” energy, but the little moments that show you what a place lives and  breathes.

At the airport, got to a lift and thought, 'there’s no room… I’ll wait for the next one'.

Three people immediately: “Nah nah - come on in. This is New York, we like to get close here."

Later, popped into a hotel I stayed at before - not even staying this time - just grabbed a drink.

The guy serving, Nick, asked if I was staying.
Said no, but I’d been a guest before.

Five minutes later he comes back with free drinks.

No reason, just a dude doing a nice thing.

Then yesterday, in a coffee shop and the Wi-Fi won’t work.

I ask the guy opposite if he managed to log in.

He said the signal was pretty bad… then offered his own phone as a hotspot anyway. 

Individually maybe not a big deal.

Together though?

A pattern that tells you about the place.

People talk about New York being intense - and it can be.

But there’s also this underlying kindness and positivity that changes how your day feels.

Back home in the UK, the baseline mood has been miserable for a while.

But the default in The Big Apple? I feel lighter already.

I came for a road trip - but I’m also here to soak up the entrepreneurial energy.

And where's better than a place that says 'why not' versus 'probably not'.

A week in New York confirmed the best and worst things I've known for a while.

I’m more bullish on the US than ever. 
And more bearish on the UK than ever.

It wasn't the towering buildings or the locals, with Starbucks Reserve in their hands.

It was the little moments out and about.

In 2017 I visited VaynerMedia and briefly met Gary Vee.

A couple of weeks ago, I dug up the old email thread and messaged it again saying I was in town.

Gary wasn’t there, but Charlie Hillman invited me in and took the time to show me around the office anyway.

Considering I'm basically a random guy reappearing from an 8 year old email chain, that was properly sound.

The rest of the week felt similar.

One morning I went to something called Pitch and Run - founders and investors meet early early, run five miles together, then grab coffee.

(Great event, even if I could barely walk for 72 hours after.)

Then there were shoot days with legends like Gabe Einhorn, Jordan Winston and Skyler Birk-Stachon.

But the point is how time with all these people ended:

“Is there anybody I can introduce you to?” 
“How can I help?”

Genuinely, I can count on one hand the number of times that’s happened in the UK over the last three and a half years.

There’s something cultural in the US that’s hard to explain unless you spend time around it.

People want to build and assume anything is possible.

Ambition is treated like a normal thing.

Contrast that with Scotland, where “profit” can feel like a dirty word.

Or the wider UK, where more and more pessimism seems to be creeping in.

And founders are responding to that.

More UK founders are looking seriously at the US market.

More conversations are happening about where the real scale opportunities are.

And after 10 days there, one thing is clear:

If you want to play at the highest level, you probably need to spend time where people already believe that level’s the baseline.

I sat down with Gabe Einhorn just to hang.
Next thing, we're filming 6 videos on the streets of NYC.
Here's what happened:

I'd checked out Gabe's content and LinkedIn profile before we even met.

Top of funnel content was solid, this guy genuinely knows how to farm attention and gets 30,000 visitors to his LinkedIn page weekly.

Which makes it more painful that nobody was doing anything with it.

No middle of funnel, nothing turning all that attention into action. 

People loved his stuff, visited his page, and then just… disappeared.

I told him he had to do some of the unsexy stuff.

That means content that gets less reach, less engagement, but talks directly to buyers instead of everyone. 

Not the kind of thing you're rushing to post on a Friday afternoon.

But it's what actually gets you business, not just attention.
