7 ways to know you have a messaging problem in your coaching business....

When your messaging is off, everything else in your business is more difficult. That's why dialling in a Magnetic Message is where I start with (almost) every client.

And after working with 430+ people from 17 different countries, I've seen the patterns.

So here's 7 signs that your messaging needs some love...

1. YOU FEEL AWKWARD ANSWERING THE “WHAT DO YOU DO” QUESTION.
You dread the question or find yourself feeling embarrassed after trying to answer it.

2. IT'S HARD TO EXPLAIN YOUR VALUE WITHOUT A LONG BACKSTORY.
You need 10 minutes to explain what you do + why it matters. 

3. PEOPLE STRUGGLE TO KNOW IF YOU'RE THE COACH FOR THEM.
When folks land on your profile or website they can't quickly identify if you're the coach "for them" or not. That's because your language is too broad ("I help humans transform their life"), because you're showing zero personality, or because you're using too much coachy coach jargon that doesn't mean anything to the average person.

4. YOU'RE ATTRACTING THE WRONG CLIENTS.
The people who reach out either don't align with your values, drain your energy, aren't ready to buy, or are in total crisis mode.

5. YOU'RE NOT PROUD OF YOUR CONTENT, PROFILE, OR WEBSITE. 
The words don't sound like you. Maybe you borrowed language from other coaches, filtering what you say, or hiding who you really are. 

6. YOUR CONTENT GETS ENGAGEMENT BUT YOU DON'T GET INQUIRES.
Claps ain't cash. So even though you're getting likes + comments, you're not getting clients. This means what you're sharing is interesting, but it's missing what makes people take action.

7. WHEN YOU DO GET ON CALLS WITH PEOPLE, YOU HAVE TO DO A LOT OF EXPLAINING.
You have to spend a lot of your time on calls explaining, teaching, and maybe even convincing people (instead of the calls being about strategy + if you two are a fit).

Having taught 25 subjects in a variety of subject areas, my main areas of teaching interest are: science & drama.  During this time, extracurricular activities served as a great source of enjoyment and learning with high school students outside of the classroom.  Some of the highlights included: helping to start a cricket league as well as coaching duties which included a city championship, reviving the Barton Drama program highlighted by a win at the Sears Drama Festival for the first time in 22 years as well as multiple performances around the city of Hamilton, starting a small Motown-based musical ensemble and a drum crew that travelled and performed around Hamilton, starting clubs targetting anti-tobacco messaging to  youth, organizing multiple Talent Shows and Coffee Houses, multiple fundraising events for various school clubs, numerous trips field trips including New York City & Chicago, starting and maintaining a Walk-in Closet to provide clothing for under privledged students, attended leadership initiatives including multiple leadership trips to OELC, participated in numerous OSSTF activities which included acting as grievance rep.

Sandwiched between these experiences was a 10 years stint as a high school science and drama teacher.

In each of these experiences, I wanted to help patients and students, but one thing stood in the way of making it easy: COMMUNICATION.

...and they're not the only ones who have told me this.

This clinic often slips into a façade of harmony.

Everyone’s polite. Meetings are calm.
No one raises their voice... or the real issues.

On the surface, things look smooth.
But underneath?
-----> frustration builds
---> trust erodes
-> good intentions that brought people into healthcare start to fade

The façade feels safe, but it’s actually what keeps clinics stuck.

This is the work I do with clinic teams through Human Scaffold: 
helping staff who care deeply about their patients learn to... 
... speak up
... listen better
... rebuild trust in the open

1. Hey... we should have a float for our Christmas parade
2. We need to find someone with a truck to tow our "float" in the parade.
3. Heck - we need a trailer.  Does anyone know someone with a trailer? (probably a family member of the FHT staff)
4. Who would like to be in the parade from the FHT (it involves showing up after hours on the weekend)
5. Where will we decorate (clearly, someone connected with the local car dealership to find a warm place to do so)
6. We need to find fun things to wear - let's meet to come up with a plan.

This is just off the top of my head.  What am I missing?

Think of all of this initiative, assertiveness and dare I say boldness that it takes to pull this together.  

Sharing these activities gives other clinics ideas.
If everyone shared... there would be a flood of great ideas to connect clinics more to their communities.

I always ask for anonymous feedback on my workshops.

When I asked for areas to improve upon, I expected a few tough comments.
They were skeptical walking in... arms crossed, ready to dislike it.

 What did I do?

Started with humour.
Kept it fully interactive.
Provided practical frameworks.
Everyone left with actionable next steps.
Created a space they didn't know they needed.

I was pleased to see the strengths in the areas to improve.
AND
...they gave extra love to the hoola hoops and the puppets.

This clinic yearned for connection...
...and now they are asking for more.

This clinic manager decided to NOT DO NOTHING - and the whole team felt the difference.
