I paid $1200 for a call with a “LInkedIn expert”.
It was disappointing.
 
A couple years ago a client brought a LinkedIn creator to my attention. The person had a couple hundred thousand followers on here. And their posts consistently got hundreds (if not thousands) of likes.
 
I was curious.
 
Especially since their content seemed rather surface-level + obvious. What secrets did they have that I hadn’t figured out yet?
 
So I booked a call for $1200.
 
They were friendly. And they gave me one helpful insight: the copy with my recent carousel post was repeating what was already in the slides. So it wasn’t acting as a good “hook”.
 
But the ending of our call was painful.
 
I asked several questions to better understand their actual strategy. How were they getting SO MUCH TRACTION on their content? That’s when they stunned me with a question.
 
”Have you heard of “engagement pods”?
 
F**k. The secret to their impressive engagement was that it was fabricated. Whenever you find yourself admiring someone on here that consistently gets 100s or 1000s of likes on every post, know that it’s only possibly if….

1. You spend HOURS on the platform every. single. day. Engaging with dozens if not hundreds of other people on the platform.     
   
2. You're a part of a pod or use automation to guarantee your posts get loads of engagement. 
   
3. You were famous BEFORE you started actively posting on here. 

I'm sure there's exceptions.  

(because there are in every situation)  

But if you find yourself lusting over the people who seem to "have it made" because their posts always get hundreds of likes, know that those are the three paths to get there. And you might want to choose different metrics to chase.  

Because...  

Even if your posts get crazy traction, it doesn't guarantee you'll get clients.

I never intended these shoes to be a part of my “brand”. I bought the first pair so I’d have funky kicks on when I competed in Speaker Slam a couple years ago. But something unexpected happened....
 
Every time I left the house in them:
 
Strangers smiled
People asked questions
And folks even asked to take pics of them
 
These brightly coloured kicks create immense joy.
 
And people started associating these crazy sneaks with me. “I recognized you right away by your shoes.” (this has been said to me multiple times)

Why do I have so many?
 
I didn’t want to be sad when the shoes died, so I bought a back up pair. Then another. And I got another set for my bday last month.

Now I have four pairs. 😂

What are you "known for" that has nothing to do with your actual work?

You’d be better off with 200 views per post from a highly specific group of people that see you as credible than getting 10,000 views on your posts from a broad audience.
 
Going viral isn’t the goal.
 
Getting your message in front of people you’re excited to serve is.
 
And then? 

You want to invite them deeper into your world. You want to build a relationship with them. You're not McDonalds trying to sell millions of 99 cent cones, you're looking for a dozen Dream Clients to do bigger meaningful work with.

Relationships > transactions.

This is how my ADHD gets me in trouble.

My excitement tricks me into thinking I can DO IT ALL.

At once.

P.S. Do you try to do too much at once?

I used to dream of having a Wiki page. Part of me really thought having a profile on that site would represent that I'd "made it". 

I took it off my list of goals years ago.

But I'd be lying if I didn't admit that my ego enjoys seeing the AI summary Google spits out when you enter my name.

Sure a couple things are weird/wrong:

• Growth Habit isn't an "agency"
• I didn't "spend my 20s as a high school drop out". That's still very much a fact now in my late 40s. 😂

But it's kind of bananas how detailed it is. 
And most of it is right.

P.S. Are we entering an era where you need a decent AI summary to be seen as legitimate?

I only posted once in the last 17 days.
And I'm onboarding 9 new clients this week.
That's thanks to

So what did I do for the last two and a half weeks?

Ate yummy food.
Laughed with the kids.
Had meaningful convos with my love.

I slowed the heck down.

I meditated, read, and wrote (a lot). And I went back to basics. I spent a couple days reviewing my values and then mapped them out my goals, systems, and calendar to ensure they actually fuel those values.

P.S. Check the comments for something that might surprise you.

7 years ago, I was a Director of People & Culture in tech. I loved the leadership coaching I did in my role. I could clearly see the impact it was having on people. 
 
And I knew I wanted to do more coaching.
 
But had no idea how I could make the change.
 
I had a six-figure salary, a mortgage, and two kids. I felt stuck. Then I read Atomic Habits and instead of just reading the words, I actually applied what I learned in the book. 

Within weeks I was feeling more confident, more creative, and more clear-headed.

Talk about what you’re learning with clients. And show what you’re experiencing.... right now. Drop the polish. 

Forget the fancy edits.
 
There's plenty of people out here pretending they don’t fart.
(and we don't need more of that)

Brave wasn’t a weak film

It was a misunderstood one.

Let me tell you a secret…

I LOVE that movie!

If you’ll ask a Pixar fan where would he rank the movie Brave among the other Pixar films, Usually the answer will be at the lower end.

That always bothers me. I love this movie, but why do most people think it’s a disappointment?

So I did a little research.

1 – It feels like a Disney movie, not Pixar

When you compare Brave for other Pixar films like The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Up, etc. You can really see it’s a different kind of movie.
It feels more like Tangled than these kinds of movies.

I think for most people it was just another princess movie, and that’s Disney, not Pixar.

Trust me, if Brave was a Disney movie and not Pixar, the reaction would have been way better.

In fact, most people say that Brave and Wreck-it Ralph (both were released at the same year) were actually felt like each movie is from the other studio:

Brave was a Pixar movie that actually felt like a Disney movie.

Wreck-it Ralph was a Disney movie that actually felt like a Pixar movie.

I strongly believe that it would have received almost the same critical acclaim as Tangled, Frozen and Moana.

And let’s face it, it deserves it, because Brave is a wonderful movie!


2 – The marketing was misleading 

I haven’t watched the trailers before the movie, so I had no expectations or any knowledge about the plot, and I loved it.

But lots of people watched the trailers.

And the trailers showed a different kind of movie. More like a magical adventure full of mystery.

But the movie was actually a small scale drama about the relationship between Princess Merida and her mother.

It was so beautiful!

So, I think people expected a whole different movie, and got upset.


Still, if you haven’t watched it yet, you should!

The story is engaging and personal, the characters are amazing, the animation is so detailed (especially Merida’s hair).

The atmosphere of the setting is phenomenal, and you can really FEEL it!

The voice action is top notch, especially Kelly Macdonald as Merida.

And above all, a magical and beautiful Scottish score by Patrick Doyle!!

So, you should definitely watch Brave!!
