- Enhancing the school's international reputation. In 2018 at the request of the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan, I delivered an online series of live webinars to over 2000 Kazakhstani English teachers aimed at improving the quality of English teaching in that country.

Asking For Coffee Chats (2)

Even though I've made 100's of videos and had 1000s of video calls for my business...I still sometimes don't like the way I look on camera. (한국어 아래 ⬇️)

I used to spend a lot of time editing the lights/colors of my videos to try to make myself look better. 

Moving into 2026 I want to be more efficient with my work time. 

There are much more valuable activities I could do than messing around with video settings to try to make myself look a little bit better. 

So, last night I tested a ton of different lighting/camera settings to find what I can use for:
• All my video content
• All my 1:1 and group sessions with clients

Pretty happy with the end result! 

Excited to start making more content with this new setup — and to spend more time on what actually matters. 🤝

업무 때문에 영상도 수백 개, 영상 통화도 수천 번 했지만…
솔직히 말하면, 아직도 가끔은 카메라 속 제 모습이 마음에 들지 않을 때가 있어요 😅

예전에는 영상 속 제 모습을 조금이라도 더 잘 보이게 하려고
조명이나 색감을 계속 수정하면서 시간을 많이 썼습니다.

하지만 2026년에는 업무 시간을 훨씬 더 효율적으로 쓰고 싶습니다.

저를 5% 더 잘 보이게 하려고 영상 설정을 만지작거리는 것보다
훨씬 더 가치 있는 일들이 많거든요.

그래서 어젯밤에는
여러 가지 조명·카메라 세팅을 전부 테스트해봤습니다.

앞으로 사용할 수 있는 설정을 찾기 위해서요:

• 모든 영상 콘텐츠
• 모든 1:1 및 그룹 세션

둘 다에 사용할 “기본 세팅”을 만들고 싶었어요.

결과적으로… 정말 만족스럽습니다!

이제는 이 새로운 세팅으로 더 많은 콘텐츠를 만들 생각에 설레고,
정말 중요한 일에 더 많은 시간을 쓸 수 있을 것 같아요 🤝

I love talking about this because:

✅: Learning how to network has completely changed my life. 

I wouldn't have this business and you wouldn't be reading this right now if I didn't understand networking.

It's also led to many of my Korean clients getting life-changing international job offers. 

Even if they had never networked before and weren't sure how.

✅: It's rarely taught well. 

I've had countless Korean clients tell me other career coaches/classes just gave general advice on how networking is important - without any real examples or proven step-by-step system to network effectively. 

Networking to get a job is much more than messaging strangers and asking them to help you. 

If you’re serious about getting the best job possible, here are several effective networking methods: 

1️⃣: Reconnecting with people you already know.

Even if you haven’t talked in a long time. Networking doesn’t have to be strangers, you might already know someone who could help you.

2️⃣: Reaching out and building relationships with employees at your target companies

Relationship is the key word. Don’t just immediately ask them to help you for free

3️⃣: Strategically messaging/emailing hiring teams when you apply to jobs

It’s gonna get you noticed

4️⃣: Connecting with recruiting agencies and headhunters 

There are good ones out there who want to help

5️⃣: Posting and commenting strategically on LinkedIn to increase visibility

This especially works if you’re interested in smaller companies. Comment on their content. 

6️⃣:  Online and offline networking events, conferences, and job fairs 

Don’t just “show up.” Have a goal/plan.

단순히 ‘처음 보는 사람에게 메시지를 보내서 도움을 요청하는 것’이 아닙니다.

진짜 좋은 회사를 원한다면, 아래 방법들을 꼭 활용해 보세요:

1️⃣ 이미 알고 있는 사람들과 다시 연락하기
오랫동안 연락하지 않았더라도 괜찮아요.
네트워킹은 반드시 ‘낯선 사람’일 필요가 없습니다.
이미 알고 있는 지인 중에서도 도움을 줄 사람이 있을 수 있어요.

2️⃣ 관심 있는 회사의 직원들에게 먼저 관계를 쌓기
핵심 단어는 ‘관계’입니다.
처음부터 도움을 요청하기보다는, 진짜 관계를 만드는 데 집중하세요.

3️⃣ 지원할 때 채용팀에 전략적으로 메시지/이메일 보내기
이렇게 하면 확실히 눈에 띄게 됩니다.

4️⃣ 리크루팅 에이전시와 헤드헌터와 연결하기
도움을 주고 싶어 하는 ‘좋은’ 에이전시들도 분명히 있습니다.

5️⃣ 링크드인에 전략적으로 게시물/댓글 남기기
특히 작은 회사에 관심 있다면 효과가 큽니다.
그 회사의 게시물에 댓글을 남기면 자연스럽게 노출이 되고, 기억에 남습니다.

6️⃣ 온라인/오프라인 네트워킹 행사, 컨퍼런스, 잡페어 참여하기
그냥 “참석만” 하지 말고,
분명한 목표와 계획을 가지고 참여하세요.

There are some parts of the hiring process where you want to be more 'big picture' and other parts where you want to go into detail. 
 
✅ 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 = Resume, LinkedIn Profile, Career Summary
 
For these, just focus on:
• The scope of your projects/responsibilities
• Your main/biggest actions
• The results and impact of your work
 
✅ 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹 = Portfolio, Case Study Presentations, Talking about Specific Experiences in Job Interviews
 
This is where you explain:   
• Step-by-step what you did  
• Tools, challenges, decisions  
• Why you made those decisions
• How you communicated with all stakeholders
 
🔥 𝗔 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲:
 
Let’s say you worked at a digital marketing agency and helped a B2B client improve their ad performance.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁? (한국어 아래 ⬇️) I have tons of examples, but this one is the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿. ⬇️

A client (who prefers to stay private) was dreaming of working in Australia 🇦🇺.

But her situation?  It looked impossible.

𝗦𝗵𝗲: 
❌ Was still in Korea
❌ Didn’t have an AUS VISA 
❌ Didn't have any way to get one 
❌ In the current market it’s almost impossible to get a job there without one

She even had another coach tell her to 'just give up'. 

And many people would have.

But not her.

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽, 𝘄𝗲:

1️⃣ Built a multi-step networking plan focused on 
• LinkedIn outreach  
• Attending as many Australia-related industry events as possible

2️⃣ Used LI search filters to find the best people for her to reach out to

3️⃣ Carefully planned all the messages she sent

4️⃣ Prepared how she could stand out at every event

5️⃣ Set up around 15 coffee chats with people who were complete strangers when we started.

Eventually, one of those new connections introduced her to the 𝗔𝗣𝗔𝗖 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲. 

6️⃣ They had an informal video interview back in September. 

He liked her so much that they 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗿 — 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

This 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 would have happened without the networking we did. 

A month of DMs, introductions, events, and virtual interviews has now completely changed her life. 

It can change yours too 🤝.

𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴(네트워킹)이 왜 중요할까요?

예시는 정말 많지만, 올해 제가 함께한 클라이언트 중 가장 인상적인 성과 한 가지를 공유하고 싶습니다.

어떤 클라이언트(익명 요청)가 호주에서 커리어를 쌓고 싶다는 꿈을 가지고 있었어요 🇦🇺
하지만 현실은… 거의 불가능해 보였습니다.

그녀는:
❌ 아직 한국에 있었고
❌ 호주 비자도 없었고
❌ 비자를 받을 방법도 없었고
❌ 현재 시장에서는 비자 없이 취업하기가 거의 불가능했습니다

다른 코치는 아예 “그냥 포기하세요” 라고 말하기까지 했습니다.
많은 사람들이 그랬을 수도 있어요.

하지만 그녀는 아니었습니다.
포기하지 않았습니다.

멜버른에 있는 글로벌 기업의 APAC Head 를 소개해주셨고…

6️⃣ 9월에 비공식 영상 인터뷰를 진행했습니다.

그리고 결과는?

그분이 그녀를 너무 마음에 들어 해서

• English isn’t your native language

I changed the name, company, and a few details for privacy —  but the 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 are exactly what he sent to hiring teams.
 
This resume helped him earn:
• A 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 sales role

It was detailed…very detailed.  

Almost everything he had done over 15+ years was inside that document.
 
He thought that was the right approach.
 
But for global hiring teams?

❌ They don't want to have to sort through pages of unnecessary details

✅ They want to quickly, clearly, and easily understand why you're a good fit for that job.

• Structured it for international roles
• Removed unnecessary details
• Focused only on his 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁, most 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁, most 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 achievements
 
When he saw the final version, he was a little bit surprised about how much shorter it was!

𝗛𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟲 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱:
👉 Two first-round global interviews

👉 Without changing anything except his resume

Hiring teams shouldn’t need 5 minutes to figure out whether you’re a strong fit.  They should know it in 𝟭𝟱 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀.

• Your strongest achievements  
• Your most relevant experience

지난달, 경력이 길고 성과도 많은 한 한국인 클라이언트가 이력서를 보내주셨습니다.
그리고 그 이력서는… 아주 자세했습니다.

15년 넘게 해온 거의 모든 업무가 한 문서 안에 들어 있었어요.

그래서 저는 이력서를 완전히 다시 작성했습니다:

• 글로벌 포지션 기준에 맞게 구조 정리
• 불필요한 내용 삭제
• 가장 강력하고, 관련성 높고, 인상적인 성과만 집중

최종 버전을 보고 그는 생각보다 많이 짧아진 것에 놀라기도 했습니다.

하지만 믿고 제출했고…
그 결과는 단 6일 만에 나타났습니다:

👉 글로벌 기업 2곳에서 1차 인터뷰 제안
👉 서로 다른 회사에서
👉 이력서만 바꿨을 뿐인데 얻은 결과

따라서, 이력서는 다음에 집중하세요:

• 당신의 가장 강력한 성과

• 그 직무를 잘할 수 있다는 확실한 증거

채용팀이 당신의 가치를 쉽게 볼 수 있도록 만드세요.
그렇게 하면 인터뷰 기회는 자연스럽게 더 많이 옵니다 🤝

For many of the Koreans I work with, English interviews are one of the most stressful parts of the job search.

That’s completely normal.

Everyone gets nervous for interviews. Especially when it’s not in your native language!

Because of that stress, many candidates:  
• Spend hours writing perfect answers
• Try to memorize them word for word.

You definitely want to be prepared 👍. But 'scripts' aren't the best way.

🚨 You can't control what they ask you

🚨 Speaking in an interview is VERY different from 'reading your script'

🚨 It's often pretty obvious when candidates are just repeating something they memorized earlier

6주 전만 해도 이 MBA 졸업생은 영국 🇬🇧에서 진행되는 영어 인터뷰가 너무 긴장됐습니다.  그런데 지금은… 여러 개의 파이널 라운드 인터뷰에 진출해 있어요.  우리가 하지 않았던 것은 바로 이겁니다 ⬇️⬇️⬇️
 
❌ 인터뷰 ‘스크립트’ 암기하기 ❌
 
제가 함께 일하는 많은 한국인 분들에게  영어 인터뷰는 취업 과정에서 가장 스트레스가 큰 부분 중 하나입니다.
 
이건 정말 지극히 정상이에요.
 
인터뷰는 누구나 긴장합니다.  특히 모국어가 아닌 언어로 진행될 때는 더 그렇죠.
 
그래서 많은 분들이 이런 준비를 하게 됩니다:  • 완벽한 답변을 몇 시간씩 작성하고  • 그걸 단어 하나하나 외우려고 합니다.
 
물론 준비는 꼭 필요합니다 👍  하지만 스크립트 암기는 가장 좋은 방법이 아닙니다.
 
🚨 어떤 질문이 나올지는 통제할 수 없습니다  🚨 인터뷰에서 말하는 것은 ‘스크립트를 읽는 것’과 완전히 다릅니다  🚨 외운 답변을 그대로 말하고 있다는 건 생각보다 쉽게 드러납니다
 
그래서…
 
✅ 우리는 스크립트 암기 대신,  이미 𝟭𝟱개국에서 한국인들의 취업 성공을 만들어낸 𝟰단계 인터뷰 준비 전략을 사용했습니다.
 
영어가 유창하지 않더라도  이 방법이 스크립트 작성보다 훨씬 효과적이라는 걸 약속드릴게요.

More than anything else, people say:  
👉 “𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨.”

𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀: 
1: You don't need 80+ recommendations. 3 or 4 is plenty and more than ~95% of LinkedIn users

2: Getting recommendations is easier than people think. Most people never ask. Or they ask the wrong way.

‘𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀(추천서) 정말 중요한가요?’  단순히 중요한 것이 아닙니다.  LinkedIn 프로필 전체에서 가장 과소평가된 요소일 가능성이 높습니다 💡.
 
저는 새로운 클라이언트를 만날 때 항상 이렇게 질문합니다:  🤔 “제 프로그램에 관심을 가지게 된 이유가 무엇인가요?”
 
그리고 가장 많이 듣는 대답은 바로 이것입니다:  👉 “다른 클라이언트들이 남긴 추천서 때문이에요.”
 
채용팀도 완전히 똑같습니다.
 
최근에 Google 출신 Hiring Manager와 이야기했을 때 그가 이렇게 말했습니다:
 
“후보자의 𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘥𝘐𝘯을 검토할 때 가장 먼저 확인한 것은 추천서가 있는지였어요.”
 
✅ 다른 사람이 당신에 대해 좋게 말해주는 것은  당신이 직접 말하는 어떤 것보다 더 강력할 때가 있습니다.
 
 
⭐ 좋은 소식:
 
1️⃣ 𝟴𝟬개 추천서가 필요 없습니다.  3~4개만 있어도 전체 LinkedIn 사용자 중 상위 5%에 들어갑니다.
 
2️⃣ 추천서를 받는 것은 생각보다 훨씬 쉽습니다.  대부분의 사람들은 요청하지 않거나…  아니면 잘못된 방식으로 요청할 뿐입니다.

Whatever the message is about, Profile 2 makes a much, much stronger first impression. 

I call this top area of your LinkedIn profile (photo + headline + banner) your 'Introduction Section'. 

In most cases, this will be people's first impression of you.

If you get this part right, EVERYTHING else on LinkedIn becomes easier:
• Getting more connections/followers
• Getting more messages from recruiters
• Getting more interview invitations
• Even getting more job offers

Here’s how to build a strong Introduction Section 👇

And yes, this is a real situation ⬇️

Last month, I connected with a Korean professional going through a career change.

From her very first message, she was:
• Kind
• Professional
• Genuinely interested in me/my business
• Truly motivated to grow her international career

A few days later, she reached out again.

Not to ask for a favor...

But to say how helpful my posts and YouTube videos were.

She even mentioned specific insights she found most valuable.

Her messages made such a great impression that I sent her some personalized advice on improving her LinkedIn profile.

What she did next blew me away:

It wasn’t about the gift card.

It was about the gesture — an act of appreciation that made me 1000X more motivated to help her than all the people who want to 'pick my brain in a free coffee chat'. 

❌ 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧:
• “Hey we just connected — now give me 30 minutes for a coffee chat.”
• Asking for time/effort without offering anything in return
• Being transactional or demanding

✅ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝘀:
• Taking a genuine interest in people
• Showing appreciation
• Giving as much as (or more than) you ask for
• Building a real relationship

When you approach people with sincerity and generosity, opportunities start coming naturally.

지난달, 커리어 전환을 준비 중인 한 한국인 전문가와 LinkedIn에서 연결되었습니다.

첫 메시지부터 그녀는:
• 친절하고
• 매우 프로페셔널하며
• 저와 제 비즈니스에 진심으로 관심을 보였고
• 글로벌 커리어를 성장시키려는 의지가 강했습니다

❌ 좋은 네트워킹은 이런 것이 아닙니다:

• “방금 연결됐으니 30분만 커피챗 해주세요.”
• 상대의 시간과 노력을 받기만 하는 것
• 요구적이거나 거래처럼 접근하는 것

✅ 좋은 네트워킹이 실제로 의미하는 것:

• 사람에게 진심으로 관심을 갖는 것
• 감사의 마음을 표현하는 것
• 요청하는 만큼(또는 그 이상) 베푸는 태도
• ‘관계’를 만드는 것 — 거래가 아닌

진심과 배려로 사람에게 다가가면,
기회는 자연스럽게 따라옵니다.

The more you know about the company, the better you’ll perform.

Before any interview, my clients and I research:
• 'Careers' pages of company websites
• Company SNS pages
• Recent news about the company/products
• The interviewer's LinkedIn profile

We look for: 
• Projects, goals, and challenges where my client’s background clearly connects
• Specific details about the company the get my client excited about working there

This personalization will make you SO much more memorable to interviewers 🤝

2️⃣ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺

❌ Never send a 'neutral' message

✅ When you could send a 'positive' message

Neutral messages aren’t “wrong”…  

…but they create ZERO emotional connection.
 
Let’s look at a few examples:

❌ 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀: 

1: I will see you in the meeting on the 25th. 

2: I saw you just moved to Google. How's that going so far? 

3: How's your job search going so far? 

There’s no warmth, no enthusiasm, no human connection.

Let's take these same phrases and make them a lot better 🤝
