Giving back to my profession is important to me, and teaching is one way I can help shape and mentor the next generation of technology leaders. As an Instructor, I teach Information Technology and Health Informatics courses in FPU's MBA, MS and BS Programs. This requires me to stay on top of changes in my industry, as my students look to me to be a relevant subject matter expert. Although I teach them, they force me to evolve and look at issues from a different perspective, which helps me grow as a leader.

As CIO, I led the planning, management, support, and security of my organization's technology and information systems. I developed the organization's technology strategy and business goals collaboratively with our executive team. I then created the roadmap to meet those objectives, allowing the organization to grow in its mission of providing high-quality, affordable healthcare.

Upon joining the organization, I identified and anticipated end-user and patient complaints about our technology and processes. Subsequently, I led a refresh of the organization’s entire infrastructure and end-user computing environments. This effort achieved a gold-standard level of operational and cybersecurity excellence, and we successfully deployed telehealth, population health, and BYOD solutions across our six-state service area. 

To ensure project success, I implemented governance and standards and advocated using advanced data to drive business decisions and outcomes. As part of this effort, we collectively created a Business Intelligence program and introduced automation, dashboards, and predictive analytics to the organization.

As a customer-focused organization, we researched and developed a patient engagement initiative with enhanced communication capabilities and an interactive online module that automated our processes. These efforts reduced patient wait times, increased time-of-service payment collections, and improved patient and staff satisfaction.

Recognized by Computerworld as a Premier 100 Technology Leader, I also helped lead the deployment of the organization’s first mobile health app which won CIO Magazine’s “CIO 100” Award, acknowledging companies that have distinguished themselves through the innovative use of technology.

Lawrence + Memorial is a not-for-profit integrated healthcare system serving southeastern Connecticut and Westerly, Rhode Island. L+M is licensed for a combined 405 beds and provides patient care to medical, surgical, pediatric, rehab, psychiatric, and obstetrical patients. L+M's staff consists of over 3,500 professional, technical, and support personnel.

As Director of Information Technology, I led the strategic planning, management, and support of the organization's technology infrastructure and its sophisticated information systems.

St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital

St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital is a not-for-profit healthcare system serving New York's lower Hudson Valley. St. Luke's Cornwall is licensed for a combined 393 beds and provides patient care to medical, surgical, pediatric, rehab, and psychiatric patients. With a staff of over 1,500, the hospital is one of the largest employers in the region. 

As the Manager of Information Technology, I held CIO accountability and led the organization’s strategic vision as it pertained to technology and information systems. Other responsibilities included managing and overseeing the tactical and daily operational responsibilities of the department including full oversight of the capital and operating budgets, staff development, HIPAA compliance, IT governance, process improvement, risk management and vendor relations. Served as the organization's IT Security Officer.

Founded in 1992, Fluxis Tech was a pioneering application developer, notably introducing one of the healthcare industry's first medical transcription and dictation systems. This early innovation set the stage for our expansion into a comprehensive provider of advanced information technology solutions, including network design and consulting, cutting-edge communications services and products, dynamic Internet/Intranet development, robust network management and support, and tailored application development.

The Story Collaborative

Sweeping changes in marketing and sales have reshaped the way that all organizations reach customers and win great employees.  A branded story approach has replaced traditional methods with visual and social technologies that require organizations to integrate their brand story across diverse media.  My role is to develop strategies for businesses and nonprofits that want to own their brand story, break down silos, and put sidelined assets to work in order to reach their goals and make a difference.

The important truth is that businesses and nonprofits of all sizes benefit from the fresh implementation of the basics which include analysis, integration across roles, and fresh marketing/sales technologies that foster increased communication and drive down costs. 

While nothing replaces the face-to-face interaction of business development professionals, I work to equip organizations for story-based communications and internal story development.  Telling a story that is authentic and offers real value to your audience is the new requirement for effective search results and it allows for goal-oriented measurement of your marketing with tangible ROI.

I don't view customer service, brand development, employee advocacy or web/social properties as isolated strategies, but rather as connected elements of a brand story as it is experienced by networked consumers, partners and those you employ.

As a consultant to C suite leaders, I developed strategic engagement programs and business development strategies for national, international as well as local organizations.  The impact of business development efforts improved as strategic communication was executed. Scope of services includes interim service as executive responsible for national and state wide programs, development and management of large scale grant funded hunger programs, nonprofit program development in collaboration with universities and international partners, review and modification of grant compliance programs, national program launch planning and ramp-up support, strategic planning.  Services provided to diverse organizations ranging from corporations and nonprofits with national reach, international service organizations and start up social enterprises in the technology, financial, community service and faith-based sectors.

Compassion by Design provides innovative strategies for local communities and all of their important assets found within the nonprofit, business and church. With proven tools, systems and training we support a movement toward communities that offer effective and principled compassion. Compassion by Design stands for the idea that communities can be intentionally compassionate without creating dependence, and that healthy communities have the ability to move people into new life trajectories by mobilizing collaborative assets. National Grant Center

The National Grant center was formed to provided training and support for community and faith based organizations seeking funding for cooperative and best practice programs.  By offering a team environment where specific competencies of participating organizations where paired with those of other partners, and by focusing on the delivery of best practices and outcome based program measurement, the center provided both direct support for fund development, RFP responses as well as training and preparation for sustainable service.  Management of the professional team, training delivery and partner coordination was my primary responsibility as the senior manager.  The center offered nationally recognized training in partnership with Federal agencies, a published DVD series, grant manuals for nonprofits of all sizes with documented delivery tens of millions in grant wins.

Faith Based Inititative

David traveled widely and spoke on development and service issues providing training to more than 7500 organizations during the initiative in partnership with SAMHSA at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services..  This has now translated into a greater focus on the work of nonprofits of all types (both new and existing) that are seeking to become more externally focused as well as nonprofits and businesses that want to work together to create healthier communities.   His work included the development of multi-state service programs for mentoring, capacity building, children, youth and seniors, and a national training center serving nonprofit development needs.  He consulted with both large and small organizations to refine and expand their targeted funding and service focus.

Garden Pathways and Family to Family

A community based organization in Bakersfield CA that provides services to the whole family and individuals with significant barriers to employment.  David created and expanded the Family to Family mentoring program which paired volunteer mentors with high barrier job seekers and offered wrap around support that included collaborative resources.  He authored the Mentoring Manual and Training for this program based upon best practices after which it was named a "Promising Practice" by the USC Center Religion and Civic Culture after a research investigation of its approach and program outcomes.  David was a participant in multiple collaborative efforts in the region, and helped to facilitate collaboration and new programs serving the homeless and high need children.  Efforts at Garden Pathways and Family to Family serve to create healthy self sufficiency and practical pathways to sustainable family futures for single parents, displaced workers and individuals with significant barriers to employment.

In our culture the number of people with a digital megaphone has increased exponentially, and with it the resistance to the noise in the market. Using a digital bullhorn doesn’t mean you are connecting your story to the people you want to serve, and even the most clever new marketing or sales hack won’t change that reality.

We are in fact facing a crisis of connection in which people are more isolated and the difficulty in reaching them for business purposes is getting harder.  Sales turnover and missed goals tell the same story. The primary question we should be asking is “How are we building and keeping relationships?” Every other measure will fail to move us toward a healthy future, and may be just as fleeting as a like on social media.

I get to help businesses and organizations that are ready to ask hard questions in order to tell a new story, and journey with them to reconnect with their own values,  making connections with customers that resonate with those values.
