10 Things commonly seen in Job Descriptions… and What They Actually Mean


“Fast-paced environment”
Translation: We are on fire. You will also be on fire. Please bring a hose.

“We wear many hats”
Translation: You’ll do marketing, HR, finance, IT, therapy, janitorial…
All while being paid for one job.  Maybe.  Maybe half a job. 

“We’re like a family”
Translation: Toxic. Exhausting. Nobody respects boundaries.
We will 100% call you on weekends.

“Must be flexible”
Translation: Your hours will change daily. Your role will change weekly.
Your salary? Never.

“Passionate self-starter”
Translation: We have no training plan. Not even a Google Doc.
You’re on your own, legend.

“Rockstar / Ninja / Unicorn”
Translation: We need a full department…
But we’re only willing to hire one severely underpaid human. And that human is you. 

“Strong communication skills”
Translation: You’ll answer emails, texts, DMs, Teams messages, Slack pings,
and carrier pigeons, simultaneously. Maybe smoke signals.

“High attention to detail”
Translation: We are a hot f*cking mess at all times.  But If you make one mistake, one little mistake, that's the end for you baby. 

“Comfortable with ambiguity”
Translation: We have no strategy, no direction, and no idea what we’re doing.
Please come fix everything.

“Competitive salary”
Translation: Competitive with what?
A summer job? A garage sale? A babysitting gig?

Who makes you a grilled cheese?

When I was a young wife and mother, my husband used to come home for lunch every day.

Five minutes from his office to our kitchen table.

He still does.

Back then, no matter how busy I was, I would stop whatever I was doing and throw something together.

Nothing special.
Grilled cheese.
Soup.
A sandwich with chips.

Leftovers heated in the microwave while a toddler tugged at my leg.

Meanwhile, my life was a circus.

Two kids.

A business I was building from scratch.

Client appointments
squeezed between school drop offs and cleaning up spilled juice.

A thousand things happening all at once, all the time.

But I still made lunch.

Because that is what women do.

We take care of everyone else first and just assume we will figure ourselves out later.

Then there was that day.

One kid was home sick.

I was cleaning up various bodily fluids.

Still taking client calls.

Still trying to keep everything moving because moms do not get to clock out when life gets messy. 

We just keep going.

I was behind on everything, halfway through sanitizing the bathroom, when my husband walked in and asked….

“Are you making anything for lunch?”

And something in me just snapped. 

Not dramatically.
Not theatrically.
Just honestly.

“Why would you assume I am making lunch today?

Why did you not think to bring something home for me?

Who makes ME grilled cheese?”

It was not about the lunch.
It never was.

It was about the invisible load women carry.

The emotional labor, the mental lists, the remembering, the anticipating, the holding it all together while pretending it is no big deal.

It is the way we keep everyone fed, comfortable, and cared for while pushing our own needs to the bottom of the pile.

That day was not my breaking point.  It was the first time I gave myself permission to say out loud what I had been swallowing for years.

“I cannot do it all. And I should not be expected to.”

Today, like all Fridays, he’ll bring home pizza for lunch. 

Not because I demanded it.

Not because of that moment all those years ago.

But because somewhere along the way, we learned that I do not always have to be the one doing everything.

And neither do you.

So let me ask this….

Who makes you a grilled cheese?

Because if the answer is no one, you are carrying far more than your share.

Job searching in 2025: The Impossible Balancing Act.

You can’t be too old.
But you can’t be too young either.

You need experience.
But not too much experience.
(That makes you “overqualified.”)

You need an education.
But not too much education.
(That makes you “unrealistic.”)

You should have accomplishments.
But don’t brag. That’s “arrogant.”

Show you understand technology.
But don’t talk about it too much, you might “intimidate the younger recruiter.”


Be confident.
But not cocky.

Be humble.
But not a doormat.

Be personable.
But not chatty.

Be flexible.
But have clear boundaries.

Be open to feedback.
But don’t appear unsure of yourself.

Have a strong personal brand.
But don’t stand out too much.

Show initiative.
But don’t “go rogue.”

Want the job.
But don’t want it too much.

Basically, you need to be 27 years old with 25 years of experience, three degrees, a calm yet passionate personality, and a resume that’s both humble and confident, written in Times New Roman but with energy.

Job search advice today feels like a riddle wrapped in irony sprinkled with contradiction.

No wonder people’s heads are spinning.
