Beginner skier, Ta-Da List conqueror and diver. My journey has been full of life shifts, including two divorces, that taught me one thing. Sort your own life out first. You can’t control what others do, but you can own your brilliance, focus on your own challenges, and show up for yourself.

I had planned on being back at work this week, head down, smashing out the start of the year.

I did start. I just did not smash.

What I realised was that I needed more time. More beach cricket with my family. 
More cuddles with my new niece. 
More being the boat lady for the people diving (I’ve decided I’m a tropical diver).
More days where the laptop stayed closed and life got the priority.

That space did exactly what it was meant to do, because now my head is clear.

To set myself up for success, today is about mapping out the final things I want to achieve this year and then putting real time in my diary to do them. 

I have even booked in hair appointments, time to write love bugs 🩷🐞, four long weekends for mini adventures, date nights, annual poker tournament…the list goes on. 

Now comes the work pieces too. Adding in personal branding workshops, even the creation of a course and new team members! 

I full life comes from choosing what matters and then protecting time for it. 

The year is nearly mapped out, and it feels good.

I remember the exact moment I realised I had outgrown my life.

It was three years after my second divorce, and I was sitting on my bed looking over my calendar, my commitments, my routines and feeling… like I’d lost my mojo. 

That day, I made a decision…

I would rebuild my identity, piece by piece, on my own terms.

I started saying no to things I would have once said yes to.

I started saying yes to things I would have once said no to, like skiing and truly backing myself and putting myself out there (my way)! 

Two years on, I don’t just work differently, I live differently. 

My energy is mine. 
My calendar reflects my priorities. 
My work reflects who I am now, not who I used to be.

Rebuilding your identity isn’t about breaking everything down.

It’s about choosing where to invest your time, your energy, and your yeses and learning the power of a well-placed no.

One thing I wanted to do this year was send a love bug each week. 🩷🐞

Years ago my hairdresser, who has since passed away, told me that her dad sent her and her sister a love bug message every Wednesday. Just a small note to say I am thinking of you, I love you, you matter. I remember thinking at the time how simple and how powerful that was, and how those are often the things that stay with us long after people are gone.

When we had our KIN retreat day and mapped out what mattered, what I wanted to create, and how I wanted to show up for people, this was on the list.

So this morning I sent my first love bug.

It was sent with no agenda other than to brighten up people I love and adore days.

I usually say nothing good happens after midnight.

After a 2.40 am bedtime following a day of water crossings on Rainbow Road and deep-dive strategy sessions in a Toyota, I might have to update this life motto of mine.

I landed from a family holiday at 4.45am last Tuesday and started the Far Out road trip at 5pm that same day. 

Another 9 days out of the office? The timing was objectively terrible.

But when an opportunity like this knocks, you don’t check your calendar. You just say yes.

The last 8 days have been a blur of Auckland, Wellington, Blenheim, Christchurch, Franz Josef, Wanaka, and Queenstown. 

But I can tell you the real journey hasn't been on the map. It is the power of connection that happens when you swap a 30 minute coffee for a 6 hour drive.

I’ve seen...
>> The gargantuan ideas Kiwi founders are turning into reality.

>> The "side quests" that weren't on the itinerary but became the highlight of the trip.

>> The incredible US tech veterans who are genuinely invested in taking NZ to the world.

>> The future of transport, from being on a Vessev to having a Merlin plane with us (their work on autonomous flying is next level).

It has been incredible to see Kiwi biz get behind this to really showcase the intel, talent, and next-level ideas coming out of NZ. 

We’ve been to OpenStar Technologies and had the likes of BNZ, Air New Zealand, and the Icehouse supporting the ecosystem, with Pals keeping us hydrated along the way.

I’m heading into the final day feeling that specific mix of "ready to sleep for a week" and "sad it’s over." 

I’m leaving with deeper bonds with old friends and a whole new circle of people I’m proud to call friends.

To the road trippers, the tastemakers, and the Far Out team, thank you for starting my 2026 with a bang.

Here’s to jumping at the opportunities that open new dancefloors.

Far Out 2026

I was recently told I’m "active rhodamine."

I had to look it up. It’s a fluorescent dye used in hi-viz vests and for tracking things in deep water. 

Basically I think, Simon Robertson was calling me a human highlighter.

The context? 

We’ve been on the Far Out 4x4 road trip and were specifically told to "pack light." 

I didn't. 

I got called out at the unofficial awards ceremony for having the most luggage by a mile.

I did try hard but 8 days, multiple events, possible 4 seasons in one day scenarios, I really wasn’t sure what not to take.

My outfits, the bright colors, the sparkles, the jeans, the shoes I love and they are an extension of me. 

I brought it all because those clothes make me happy, and they let people know exactly who I am before I even open my mouth.

I could have packed a tiny bag of "sensible" clothes but instead, I showed up as myself, and I’m pretty sure I made an impact (even if it was just on the car's suspension).

There’s a lot of pressure to tone yourself down and "pack light" emotionally and visually to fit in. 

I’d rather be the one with the most luggage and the 7 pairs of shoes.

If you’re going to show up, you might as well be unmissable.

Thanks for my unofficial, official award Simon. It made me smile and feel very much part of the crew.

The price of entry is starting.

Seems my skiing is still in starting phase even 5 years on, oh and did I mention I’m still shit?!

The one that says "Red Bull contact me please" because of the spectacular moves? 

Yip. That’s pretty much footage of me.

I’m stuck on the green runs while everyone else looks like they are dancing down the mountain. 

It’s easy to feel like you’re failing when you’re super uncoordinated and terrified of the ice, the heights, or being taken out by a snowboarder.

The cost of entry for anything new is looking like a beginner.

Because you are one.

You have to start somewhere. 
You have to be willing to wobble. 
You have to be okay with the fact that your journey doesn't look like theirs.

Don’t compare your wobbly green run to someone else’s black diamond dance. 

Enjoy where you’re at. 
Keep trying to parallel (FML it’s hard).
You’re on your own journey.

Last year asked a lot of me, well actually I asked alot of myself. 

I’m proud of what I've built and am still building.

I’m honest about the cost... I worked constantly.
My family and friendships waited patiently and financially, I stretched further than I should have. Hundreds of thousands further. 

2026 is doing it all over again, deliberately. 

I want Revved. to welcome 800 of New Zealand’s most thoughtful, ambitious business leaders into the room.

I want my personal branding agency to grow in reach and depth. First up with a rebrand, goodbye Tickled Pink.

I want KIN International to keep being a place where women feel seen, safe and supported to thrive. 

And I want my life outside of work, my people, my energy, my health, my finances, to be protected, not negotiated.

I know that I can make this happen by slowing down to speed up and getting super clear on where I am heading and how. 

And then building a plan that matches the life I actually want to live.

Most people think they’re overwhelmed because they have too much to do.

What I see is different, they’re overwhelmed because they haven’t decided what not to be anymore.

Behavioural psychology shows that decision fatigue increases when identity boundaries are unclear.

When you keep every option open, your nervous system stays on alert.

There was a phase where I said yes to opportunities that sounded impressive but felt wrong.

Not because they aligned, but because I didn’t want to close doors.

The moment I consciously decided who I was no longer available to be, my energy returned.

Although those who know me,,,, lets be honest I still say yes too often... eek!

What version of yourself are you still keeping alive out of fear?

One of my highlights in 2025 was being part of the epic team that ran the first ever in person Blanchard Student Self Leadership in person event. 

When I say FIRST EVER... I mean the first ever in the world. 

And no place better to host this than none other than Taradise aka Taranaki.

The really cool thing is we have been given the green light to do it again this year... so keep a look out to see which region we are going to approach this year.

If everything feels urgent, nothing is actually clear.

Most people think they're bad at prioritising. 

What they're actually bad at is noticing when their nervous system is driving the bus.

Breathwork isn't about achieving some zen state. 

It's about creating choice. 

When your body feels safe, your options expand. 

Simple as that.

A long, controlled exhale lowers physiological arousal and brings your prefrontal cortex back online, that's where perspective and judgment live.

I've learned this the hard way, when I'm breathing high in my chest, I make fast decisions I later question. 

When I slow my breath, my thinking slows just enough to be intentional instead of reactive.

Try this before your next "urgent" decision today, change your breath first, then decide.

So are you  a breath holder or an accidental sigh champion?

Who are you becoming this year?

Every January, we all get bombarded with 

“New Year, New Me.”

But lets be realllly honest... most of us don’t need a new self.
We need a deeper understanding of the self that’s already here.

And sometimes, the biggest frustration isn’t that we don’t know what to do next…

 It’s that we don’t really understand how we naturally operate.

So we set expectations that don’t match our wiring  and then judge ourselves when they don’t stick.

What if, instead of forcing yourself into someone else’s version of “success”…

You simply understood your natural behavioural style better?

That’s one of the reasons I love Extended DISC.

Not because it puts you in a box……but because it helps you see the box you keep putting yourself in and decide whether it still fits.

 I’ve seen this repeatedly..
🟡 High-D people beat themselves up for slowing down ,even when reflection is exactly what they need.

 🔵 High-I people think they’re “inconsistent,” when they’re actually just energy-driven and inspired by connection.

 🟢 High-S people think they’re “too soft,” when their superpower is calm, grounding presence.

 🔴 High-C people think they’re “overthinking,” when they’re actually creating clarity and rigour the rest of us rely on.

None of these are faults.
They’re patterns. And patterns tell stories.

A little honesty from me…
For years, I tried to operate like a “go-hard-or-go-home” machine every January.

Big intensity. All-in. No breathing room.

And when I eventually slowed down, I’d tell myself I’d “lost momentum.”

But when I really explored my own profile, I realised something powerful:

I’m at my best when there’s heart, meaning, and connection in what I’m doing.

Not when I’m chasing some external finish line.

The moment I stopped trying to be someone else, my work, my coaching, my relationships…

They all shifted.

Not because I changed who I was.

But because I stopped arguing with who I was.

So here’s a different kind of New Year reflection for you, instead of asking…
“What do I want to achieve?”

Try asking…
  “How do I naturally move through the world  and how can I work with that instead of against it?”

Regulation beats explanation.... every time.
Breathwork works because rhythm creates safety.

A slow, steady pattern tells the nervous system
 “You’re not in danger.”

Dory doesn’t stop to analyse the situation.
She moves with rhythm.

And that rhythm carries everyone forward.

Try this
 Next time anxiety spikes, slow your exhale down.
 Longer out-breath. Fewer words. Less force.

January 1st is the worst time to change your life

Clarity is not something you find.
It’s something you stop avoiding.

Most people say they want clarity.
What they actually want is reassurance without consequence.

So this is what i see all the time with people I work with
Clarity isn’t blocked by confusion, it’s blocked by attachment.

Attachment to identity.
Attachment to sunk cost.
Attachment to how things “should” look by now.


From a cognitive neuroscience lens, the brain resists clarity when it threatens identity.

Ambiguity feels safer than certainty if certainty requires behaviour change.

There was a point in my life where I wasn’t unclear, I was unwilling.

You can’t mindset your way out of a dysregulated nervous system.

If your body is in survival mode… your mindset tools are working with the parking brake on.

You can journal.
You can affirm.

You can read every mindset book on the planet…

But if your nervous system thinks you’re under threat?
Your brain will prioritise protection over positivity.

Sometimes the work isn’t “fix your thinking.”
Sometimes it’s “teach your body that you’re safe.”

Because your breath is the remote control for your nervous system.

Slow, steady breathing signals to your brain:
“You’re okay. You don’t need to brace for impact.”

And when the body calms down, the story in your head often softens too.

There was a period where my body was permanently braced.

I told myself, “I’m fine. I’ll push through.”

Except my chest was tight.
Sleep was shallow.
Breathing was short.

It wasn’t until I started intentional breathwork that I realised how long I’d been running survival mode as my default.

And when I finally exhaled… it felt like my life did too.

That’s breathwork.
Not magic.

Just physiology working with you, not against you.


Before you push yourself harder…check in with your breath.

Inhale slow.
Exhale longer.
Repeat.

You don’t have to think your way to safety, you can breathe your way there.

 If breathing wasn’t automatic, how many alarms would you set to remember?

Advanced 

Your words aren’t labels. They’re instructions to your brain.

Be careful with the sentences that start with “I am…”

They’re not descriptions.
They’re identity statements.

 We casually say things like:

 “I’m terrible at that.”
 “I’m socially awkward.”
 “I’m always anxious.”

And then we wonder why change feels impossible.

The language you use doesn’t just describe your reality.
It builds it.

From an NLP perspective, 
language shapes perception → perception shapes behaviour→ behaviour shapes outcomes.

So your words become your world.

I once worked with someone who constantly said:
“I’m just bad with people.”

The truth?
They’d had a few rough experiences and turned them into a permanent identity.

So we changed the script to:
“I’m learning how to connect better.”

Same person.
Same history.
Completely different future.

Because the brain stopped defending the identity and started supporting the intention.

So next time you say “I am…...... PAUSE
Ask yourself:

Does this sentence lock me in.... or open me up?

If your brain followed EVERYTHING you said literally… what’s the weirdest instruction you’ve ever given it?

Most people succeed the moment they stop trying to impress everyone.

Agree or disagree?

Most people don’t need another goal.
They need a new identity.

If you keep setting intentions but keep ending up in the same place, this isn’t a discipline problem.

It’s an identity one.

Most people think they’re stressed because of their workload.

They’re wrong.

Stress isn’t created by volume, it’s created by a dysregulated nervous system interpreting everything as urgent.

Breathwork doesn’t relax you.

It retrains your threat response.

When the exhale is shorter than the inhale, the body remains in sympathetic activation.

Decision-making narrows. Reactivity increases. Perspective disappears.

I used to mistake urgency for importance.

Shallow breathing was my baseline and I didn’t even notice until I learned how regulation actually works.

Changing my breath changed the quality of my thinking, not just my mood.

If your breathing reflects how you lead, what would it say about you today?

And just for fun...
 Be honest, did you just notice your breathing because you read this?

Being busy doesn’t make you important. 
Being deliberate does.

Agree or Disagree?

The way we describe ourselves shapes our future more than we realise. 

We often label ourselves casually with phrases like, 

"I'm not great at that," or 

"That's just how I am." 

While these may seem harmless, they are not. 

Research in NLP indicates that identity-based language can lock our behaviour in place. 

Our brains perceive these labels as boundaries rather than mere descriptions.

 When we frame behaviour as part of our identity, our nervous system defends it, making change feel like a threat rather than an option.

I used to say, "I'm not very patient." 

That simple sentence gave me permission to stop trying. 

However, once I changed my language, my behavior began to follow suit.

What label have you been living from that might not be true anymore?

If you could uninstall one sentence from your brain right now, which one's getting deleted first?

Most of us aren't indecisive. 

We're just exhausted from disappointing people.

Here's what happens..... January starts, the noise comes back, work, expectations, everyone's opinions. 

Suddenly every decision feels like it weighs a ton.

Here's the thing about Mindfluence, if you're not consciously influencing yourself, you're being unconsciously influenced by everyone else. 

Full stop.

We're wired for social safety first. 

We choose what keeps us accepted over what keeps us aligned, even when it costs us our clarity. 

Psychology backs this up, but you already know it's true because you've lived it.

I've said yes to things that made me hmmmm "why am I doing this??", not because I believed in them, but because I didn't want to let someone down.

The cost showed up later as resentment and that deep fatigue you can't shake.

So here's my question for you....

Where are you choosing harmony over honesty right now?

And be real... if your calendar could talk, would it thank you or beg for mercy?

We talk endlessly about mindset, but ignore the body that’s running it.

We’ve normalised the jitters, the crashes, the sleepless nights. We tell ourselves it’s just the cost of ambition. But what if the problem isn’t you… it’s the way we’ve learned to borrow energy?

That’s the question Amber Scott couldn’t ignore.

In the latest episode of Baskets of Knowledge, we speak with Amber, a fourth-year law student who turned her own struggle with chronic fatigue and caffeine overload into an idea that challenged the status quo. Instead of pushing harder, she asked a different question...

What if energy didn’t have to come at the expense of your nervous system?

Amber shares how her frustration led her into neuroscience research, expert conversations, and real experimentation. She discovered that a huge percentage of coffee drinkers experience negative side effects, they just assume it’s normal. 

The problem was personal, but the scale was far bigger than she expected.

Amber doesn’t perform confidence. She talks about imposter syndrome, building a science-based product as a law student, learning when to ask for help, and staying anchored to her values when doubt and feedback hit hard. 

It’s a conversation about growth, identity, and choosing depth over noise, especially when the world expects you to live a certain way.
