"2026 will be the year of courage"


This was the key takeaway from a local networking community I joined for coffee this morning where we discussed plans & intentions (nobody likes the term "resolutions" anymore) for the year ahead. 

2025 was uncertain and unstable for so many of us largely due to various things outside of our control (economy, politics, etc.). 

Some specific areas where courage could be leveraged:

- Courage to connect with others as humans: opting to pick up the phone instead of hiding behind written comms (such as email) or, better still, arranging to meet face to face; especially when the conversation is important. We are social animals and the way the world has evolved today is increasingly presenting ways to forget this fact. 

- Courage to embrace change: the uncertainty from last year was felt in part due to fear of the unknown and fear of the new; new ways of working, new technologies emerging faster than we can keep up. The willingness to accept change and adopt what it brings wholeheartedly will go a long way in the year ahead. 

- Courage to adapt: to maintain an open mind and to accept being novice in something. With all this technological change and the pace of it, very few people from this morning's coffee were planning more than 3 months in advance as, by then, so much will have likely changed yet again. The longer you spend following certain routines and practices, the naturally harder it becomes to change. 

As I look back over the decade I've now been in business, Courage is one trait which has remained consistent in my life. The courage to persist but also to be self-aware enough to recognise & accept when change is needed - both in the business and in myself. 

If you can take one thing into this year that lays in front of us, consider being more courageous.

OpenAI is launching ChatGPT Health... And I'm not sure how I feel about it. 


Apparently, "Health is already one of the most common ways people use ChatGPT, with hundreds of millions of people asking health and wellness questions each week."

This came as a surprise to me. I can't quite pinpoint why. I guess it's probably largely due to the fact I know that LLMs are just tools. Incredibly complex, sophisticated and convincing tools. But tools nonetheless. 

The news of OpenAI committing time toward encouraging more people to put their trust in discussing their health concerns and, more specifically, their health data into their platform unsettles me. 

The launch of this new functionality in ChatGPT is only going to be accessible those of us living outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom but they have plans to expand access and make Health available to all users on web and iOS in the coming weeks. 

I don't know if it's just me but despite OpenAI's best efforts to reassure me of their security & privacy practices regarding these "Health" specific conversations, I still don't feel comfortable with the idea of giving this level of personal information to their systems. 

For those who are not working in such close proximity with technology on a regular basis - the lay people, if you will - I worry this will only lead to more blind faith in technology without appropriate consideration for the risks. 

While I'm excited for the pace of technology today, I'm also uneasy about news like this. I'm torn.
