Copywriter and Brand Consultant

National Science Foundation (NSF)

The United States Antarctic Program is tasked with managing scientific research in the coldest, driest, harshest environment on earth.

I had to figure out how to motivate people who I didn't hire to do some of the toughest labor in the world while navigating a behemoth bureaucracy.

I directed distribution and logistics of materials for the Operations Department, including the Vehicle Maintenance Facility, South Pole Traverse, Air Ground Equipment, Fuels, water, waste water, and power plants.  

I also maintained inventory accuracy for over 60,000 line items by conducting regular inventories and audits. I used my automotive and heavy/industrial equipment experience to identify supporting equipment and parts for customers. 

Key Achievements:

I re-structured and re-wrote training protocols for the Operations Supply Department. Then, I led trainings and mentored employees.

I planned and executed nine complex audit, transfer, and change projects involving multiple departments and stakeholders using comprehensive project initiation documents and work breakdown structures.   
 
I supervised passenger movements and ground crew activity for winter flight operations.

Projects:

Since McMurdo has tons of old, obsolete parts, I created, implemented, and oversaw a pilot program for retrograding old, outdated cargo in preparation for the AIMS (Antarctic Infrastructure Modernization for Science) project. 

We were able to ship 31 sea containers with 2800 line items back to the U.S. for resale and recycling.

My master's degree is in environmental planning and resource management, so I participated in the early planning stages of the AIMS (Antarctic Infrastructure Modernization for Science) project, which will result in comprehensive redevelopment of McMurdo Station into a more energy and resource efficient station.

Lead Materials Manager | Operations Department | United States Antarctic Program

I regularly pushed my physical and mental boundaries while operating loaders and other forklift material handling equipment in both indoor and outdoor environments.

As I saw opportunities for improvement, I created systems to increase efficiency, safety, and clear communication.

I maintained inventory accuracy for the work center assigned by conducting inventories and audits of supplies.

Researched, retrieved, and issued supplies to customers in extreme weather conditions for extended periods. Used automotive and heavy/industrial equipment experience to identify supporting pieces and parts for customers.

Using my professional driving and group leadership expertise that I gained while driving for the Green Tortoise, I shifted my sights quite a bit further south.

I provided professional passenger transportation, performed vehicle maintenance and upkeep, and assisted with runway operations daily, supporting flights to the South Pole, New Zealand, and field camps throughout the continent.

Green Tortoise Adventure Travel

The Green Tortoise is an adventure travel company that completely re-imagined sustainable travel with custom sleeper coaches and off-the-beaten path itineraries.

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to travel. In high school, my friends were saving for cars or clothes or some other crap... I was saving for a trip to Europe.

I took my first Tortoise trip in 2004 and discovered secrets of Baja California that I never could have imagined. At the time, I didn't feel like I could take a trip like that by myself. The Tortoise gave me structure, community, and experience that were invaluable.

Little did I know that two years later, I'd be leading other people on these trips. And then I'd be addicted for many years to come...

I managed diverse groups of 15-36 people from all over the world for periods up to 28 days straight in a communal living and traveling environment... while coordinating food production, scheduling, and disaster management. PLUS the whole driving the coach thing...

I led 52 successful seasonal adventure travel trips throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico.  Coach operation and repair expertise were required. 

I learned how to stay cool when shit was going REALLY wrong, manage people's expectations and safety, think on the fly, and communicate boundaries and goals. It is by far one of the hardest (and best) jobs I've ever had.

This is also where I got my first taste of marketing communications- I re-wrote and updated information for 35 trip itineraries for customer outreach and engagement.

Then, I updated website copy and content for SEO to improve visitor experience and increase product sales.

Key Achievements:

I lectured to 30-200 students on pertinent and thought-provoking topics.

I maintained office hours, the online education forum, and responded promptly to student and faculty questions and concerns.  

I used rubrics to assess and edit 150 students’ essays per semester.... needless to say, I had a high volume workload with quick turn-around times.

I focused on critical reading, thinking, and writing skills while teaching intermediate composition classes for 200-250 students per year.  

A vibrant and relevant curriculum was crucial, so I made sure that what I was teaching was something I would have wanted to learn at that age.  

I conferred frequently with parents and administrators to maintain optimal communication and high levels of student engagement and achievement.  

I also ran the yearbook department, where instructed students in photography, writing, reporting, marketing, budgeting, design, and layout in a class of 25-40 students. 

Key Achievements:

I managed a large yearbook department with an annual budget of $75,000 by organizing photographers, publisher, school staff, and students to produce a high-quality publication. 

I directed marketing and financial resources within the yearbook department for maximum profitability.

My first role was as an associate teacher, and I advanced to head teacher for two summers.

Supervised 2-3 teachers’ assistants. 

Created and implemented an age-appropriate curriculum for children ages 3-5. Facilitated a rich learning environment by emphasizing emotional intelligence, social skills, and problem solving skills in the children in classrooms of 16-20 students.
