At the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, orphaned baby elephants are given a new beginning. Since 1977, this sanctuary has welcomed little ones who have lost their mothers - to poachers, drought, or accidents.

The first days are the hardest. These gentle giants cry, refuse food, and can even give up hope. That’s when the humans step in, not just as caretakers, but as family.

Each elephant is paired with a “nanny” who bottles feeds, tucks them in at night, and stays close so they feel safe. Social scientists call this step essential, because elephants are among the most socially sensitive creatures on Earth. 🌱

As they grow, the calves are moved to larger sanctuaries to learn how to live in herds, find water, and navigate the wild. Many return years later, bringing their own little ones - a quiet thank you to those who gave them a second chance at life.

James Harrison was just 14 when a risky chest surgery nearly took his life. Donated blood saved him, and he made a promise: when he was old enough, he would give back.
