The numbers said he was fine. The sleepless nights said otherwise.

When we spoke, he was running a tech company that looked stable, but the strain behind it told a different story. 

He’d built teams, landed funding, hit milestones.

Yet at 1 a.m., he was still staring at spreadsheets, wondering why forward momentum kept disappearing.

The problem wasn’t the model. It was the loops running him.

He poured everything into the next big idea but ignored the systems that kept it alive. He called it innovation. It was avoidance.

After years of forcing deals through slow partners, he started lowering his own bar. "I just want it done" he said.

That line has cost more founders their freedom than failure ever has.

𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽 𝟯: 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁.
He said yes too often. Stayed quiet when he should have pushed back.
Every unspoken truth turned into resentment that burned twice as long.

He thought he had a money problem.

What he really had were mental bottlenecks hiding inside business problems.

Five weeks later, the company stabilized.
He wasn’t chasing deals. He was choosing them.

Most never make it that far.
They patch symptoms, chase fixes, and call it progress.

I saw a line online years ago and it hit harder than I expected.

"Trying to bring my idea to life but there are so many things I feel like I need to do before I start that I end up doing nothing."

That was me in the last stretch of my real estate development career.

By late 2019, I knew I was done trying to force myself into a life that did not fit anymore.

I had the idea for the work I do now. I could feel it.
But every time I thought about starting, the list showed up.

Build a website.
Pick the right tools.
Write the right words.
Make the offer perfect.
Make myself perfect.

Then 2020 hit. The whole world shook.
All the noise stopped at once.
No one had the answers.
Everyone was guessing.

That was the moment I realized something important.

There is never a clean starting point.
There is never a day where the list gets shorter.
There is never a time when the fear goes away long enough to give you permission.

I was stuck in the same loop I now help other leaders cut.
The loop that makes preparation feel safe and movement feel dangerous.

Starting my coaching work was not perfect.
It was messy.
I took one step. Then another. Most of them felt wrong as I took them.

But I finally moved.

And once I did, everything that looked impossible became simple because I was no longer thinking about it.

I’ve always loved to travel (admittedly much preferred at the front of the plane 😉), but this fall I made myself a promise: combine business with joy.

Here's the best advice I ever received from my dad. 

Whenever I faced tough decisions, he’d always ask:

→ “What feels right to YOU?”

Not what I, your dad, think.
Not what your boss thinks.
Not what your clients think.

What feels right to YOU.

Because at the end of the day, you need to be at peace with your own choices.

Not living the life others expect, but one true to your values.

That advice is at the front of my mind as I navigate to be more selective with my speaking engagements and more frequently say 'no'.

This advice is front and center as I look to deploy on a potential next peacekeeping mission.

Some people say, “You’re crazy. You would be losing momentum in your speaking.”

But momentum means nothing if it’s not aligned with what feels right.

✅ Bottom line: A productive response comes from humility and alignment with your values.

Anything else is just a reaction.

The hardest part of leadership isn’t making the right call.

It’s making a call when you don’t have all the answers.

Because here’s the truth: you’ll never have perfect information.

Not in life.
Not in business.
Not in the military where lives are at stake.

And definitely not when deciding something as personal as whether to deploy on another peacekeeping mission, which I am currently contemplating.

The playbook is the same across all of it.

1) Widen the lens

Do not huddle with one perspective. Ask a range of people.

👉 In the field: not just the intel officer, also the ops lead.

👉 In life and work: family, colleagues, clients, people inside the speaking world, and people far outside it.

Ask: What are the downsides? What could I be missing? Will I lose momentum? If yes, can I live with that?

2) Assign a devil’s advocate

Invite someone to poke holes.

👉 “Drill into this. What assumptions are we not stating? What am I not seeing?”

This is not about criticism.

It is about pressure-testing your thinking before reality does.

3) Decide, commit, and set review cadences

Pick a path. Stick with it.

Check in on a rhythm that fits the stakes and speed of change.

Every 2, 4, 8, or 12 weeks.

Ask: What new information has emerged? Do we stay the course or adjust?

✅ Bottom line

Hard decisions do not get easier with time.

They get easier with a process.

Widen your input.
Invite challenge.
Decide with confidence.

And then keep checking your course as new information comes in.
