France revealed the real playbook.

If you want to understand why nuclear is returning to the policy agenda, look at France.

During its nuclear expansion, France built 43 reactors in roughly two decades.

The result:

• GDP per capita surged
• CO₂ emissions per person declined

That combination is rare in energy systems.

Economic growth and deep decarbonisation.

As countries electrify transport, industry, and AI infrastructure, the need for large-scale firm power becomes unavoidable.

Which brings us to the next phase.

The countries that succeed won’t only build reactors.

They will build fully integrated nuclear ecosystems.

• reactor construction at scale
• domestic supply chains
• fuel cycle capability
• export ambitions

That’s industrial strategy - not only energy policy.

The real question is no longer whether nuclear works.

It’s who can build it repeatedly, at scale, and fast enough.

The most strategic nuclear assets are not reactors.

They are fuel-cycle capabilities.

Every nuclear reactor depends on the same upstream chain:

Mining
Conversion
Enrichment
Fuel fabrication

Today that chain is:

• geographically concentrated
• geopolitically sensitive
• capital intensive

As nuclear deployment scales again, fuel security becomes strategic.

Countries and utilities that control:

• enrichment capacity
• fabrication capability
• long-term fuel supply

will have a structural advantage.

In the next decade,

fuel cycle infrastructure may become one of the most valuable assets in the nuclear ecosystem.

That’s the scale jump few truly appreciate in nuclear.

I often get asked how a nuclear fuel assembly is built.

It starts small:

→ A uranium pellet the size of a fingertip
→ Stacked inside metal cladding
→ Forming a 4 m fuel rod
→ Bundled into a fuel assembly

Simple steps.

But here’s what matters:

Each layer is a control point.

Not just manufacturing - risk containment by design.

Because in nuclear:

→ Precision compounds
→ Tolerances stack
→ Failure is engineered out, not managed later

A single fuel assembly is only one unit.

But multiply that across ~150 assemblies in a reactor core…

And you’re looking at one of the most energy-dense, tightly engineered systems on earth.

Small objects. Massive consequences.

That’s nuclear.

Sunday reflection.

After several decades of limited deployment, nuclear is quietly returning as a strategic infrastructure market.

Not just in the UK.

Globally.

What’s driving this shift is not a single factor, but a convergence of forces:

• energy security
• electrification of industry
• AI-driven electricity demand
• long-term decarbonisation goals

But from a market perspective, the most important shift is this:

Nuclear is moving from one-off megaprojects toward programme-scale deployment.

Projects like
Hinkley Point C
and
Sizewell C

are more than power stations.

They are the reconstruction of a national nuclear capability.

Supply chains.
Engineering capability.
Programme delivery expertise.

And they create the platform for what comes next:

• future large-scale reactors
• Small Modular Reactors
• potential new nuclear sites
• export opportunities for UK industry

This is why nuclear is increasingly being discussed not only as an energy technology.

But as industrial strategy.

Countries that succeed in nuclear tend to treat it as a long-term programme.

Standardised designs.
Repeat construction.
Industrial learning curves.

The next phase of nuclear growth will likely follow the same pattern.

The real competition will not be over reactor designs.

It will be over industrial capability and delivery discipline.

And that will determine which countries and companies lead the next generation of nuclear deployment.

How do you actually build 100 nuclear reactors?

Most discussions begin with reactor technology.

In reality, large-scale deployment depends on something else: industrial capacity.

Inside nuclear delivery programmes, these constraints become very clear.

Scaling nuclear requires five systems working together:

• factories capable of producing nuclear-grade components at scale
• a highly skilled engineering and construction workforce
• resilient nuclear fuel supply chains
• stable, long-term policy frameworks
• capital that understands infrastructure investment cycles

Countries that have delivered nuclear at scale recognise an important principle.

Reactors are not standalone technology projects.

They are industrial programmes.

France demonstrated this in the 1970s.
South Korea refined the model in the 2000s.
China is applying it today with remarkable consistency.

The next phase of nuclear expansion will likely be shaped by one central question:

Which countries are able to rebuild the industrial ecosystem required to deliver reactors repeatedly?

Technology matters.

But execution capability ultimately determines whether nuclear can scale.

The countries that solve this industrial challenge will likely define the next era of nuclear deployment.

1979 changed nuclear operations forever.

Not by shutting it down - but by scaling discipline.

On this day, the TMI accident became an industry inflection point.

Not only a failure event-
a system-level signal that something deeper needed to change.

What actually reshaped nuclear wasn’t the incident itself.

It was the response that followed:

→ Simplified and prioritised control room signals
→ Standardised, simulator-based operator training
→ Human factors elevated to a design and regulatory priority
→ Creation of peer review bodies like Institute of Nuclear Power Operations

Core insight:

It was not only a plant issue-
but a human–machine interface issue.

Nuclear didn’t only fix a problem.
It redesigned how humans interact with complex systems.

You don’t manage complexity with more complexity.
You manage it with better design and clearer signals.

The energy transition is not a substitution event.

It’s an expansion event.

Global supply grows from ~650 EJ to ~750 EJ by 2050. Electrification, digitalisation, and AI don’t shrink demand - they multiply it.

This creates a dual‑track reality for every energy and infrastructure organisation:

We must keep the existing system operational
while simultaneously building a new one at unprecedented scale.

That duality reshapes capital planning, risk management, and long‑term infrastructure strategy.

It elevates the importance of technologies that deliver system stability, not only sustainability. Which is why nuclear is returning to the centre of strategic planning - not as a climate narrative, but as infrastructure that keeps an expanded grid balanced and investable.

If you’re building or financing data centres, industrial electrification, or AI compute, you’re not preparing for a cleaner version of today.

You’re preparing for a larger, more energy‑intensive system that demands firm, reliable capacity.

37 reactors are currently under construction in China.
Most Western countries are building very few.
Which raises an important question for the next phase of nuclear expansion.

Who will finance it?

For decades nuclear projects were largely government-led programs.

And in several countries that remains the model.

Countries like China, India and Russia are driving most of the reactors currently under construction.

These programs operate with strong state-led delivery structures.

But in many Western markets, governments are unlikely to fund the next wave of nuclear alone.

That means a different model is emerging.

One that increasingly resembles infrastructure finance.

The same capital that finances:

• airports
• toll roads
• transmission networks
• data centers

is beginning to look at nuclear.

And it makes sense.

Nuclear has many of the characteristics infrastructure investors seek:

• 60–80 year asset life
• predictable long-term revenues
• essential system value
• protection against energy volatility

Projects like Sizewell C are early examples of this transition.

The next phase of nuclear deployment may therefore follow two parallel models:

- State-led programs in countries like China and India.
- Infrastructure-style financing in markets like the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

The countries that successfully attract long-term infrastructure capital may be the ones that unlock the next wave of nuclear deployment.

Do you think Western nuclear expansion will rely more on governments or infrastructure investors?

Or put another way:

The real question is no longer whether nuclear will scale - but who will finance it.

Most reactors run on ~5% enriched uranium.

Next-generation reactors need up to 20%.

When people discuss Small Modular Reactors, the focus is usually on the reactors themselves.

Factory construction.
Modular deployment.
Faster build times.

But there is another piece of the system that matters just as much.

Fuel.

Many advanced reactor designs rely on HALEU - High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium. Compared with traditional reactor fuel, HALEU contains a higher concentration of U-235.

HALEU isn’t new. It has powered submarine and naval reactors for decades, proving its reliability, stability, and performance under demanding conditions. 

From my own experience in core design, higher enrichment fundamentally changes what is possible. It opens design space that was previously constrained by 5% fuel, enabling:

• build smaller reactor cores
• operate for longer periods between refueling
• design reactors with higher efficiency and higher temperatures

This is particularly important for:

• microreactors
• high-temperature reactors
• advanced SMR designs

Think of it this way.

Traditional nuclear fuel is like a standard battery.

HALEU is a higher-energy battery, allowing smaller devices to run longer and deliver more power.

But that higher-performance fuel also introduces a new strategic issue.

Global enrichment infrastructure was largely built to supply 3-5% enriched uranium.

HALEU requires additional enrichment capacity and specialised fuel fabrication.

Which means the scale-up of advanced reactors will depend on something often overlooked in energy discussions:

fuel supply chains.

As AI infrastructure, data centers, and electrification drive demand for reliable power, the conversation around nuclear will increasingly include not just reactors…

…but the fuel that enables them.

Energy strategy is now corporate strategy

Not because it’s new
Because it anchors advantage 

Global energy markets are converging on a clear reality: nuclear power is no longer optional - it is strategic.

Nuclear construction is entering a decisive growth phase, driven by:

• Surging electricity demand - AI, electrification, emerging markets
• Decarbonisation & net-zero commitments - scalable, carbon-free baseload power
• Energy security - resilience after a decade of supply shocks

The next era won’t be defined by whether organisations engage in nuclear.

It will be defined by how you create lasting value.

This week I’ve seen the same theme come up again 

Most people still put nuclear in the “too hard” bucket:

- Too complex
- Too regulated 
- Too long-term

But data centres are changing that equation.

Global power demand from AI and cloud is set to quadruple by 2035.
That’s baseload demand - 24/7, always-on, high-grade electricity.

Renewables and gas can’t carry it alone. 

For Big Tech, the math is simple:

They need firm, clean, scalable baseload power.

That’s nuclear.

Not as an option.
As a necessity.

We’re entering a new era where hyperscalers aren’t just buying power - they’re trading it, financing it, and soon… deploying nuclear.

The question is no longer “Should nuclear be part of the mix?”
It’s “How fast can we build it to keep the digital economy alive?”

This isn’t about ideology - it is all about physics.

Now that hyperscalers are actively investing in nuclear projects, how does this new reality reshape the traditional energy investment landscape? historically led by utilities and governments

This isn’t an energy infographic.

It’s industrial strategy - visualised.

Because every slice of these charts reflects a set of national priorities:

→ China / India: Coal = scale + sovereignty
→ US / UK: Gas = flexibility + market design
→ France: Nuclear = strategic independence

What’s changing is the context.

AI adoption is accelerating.
Electrification is reshaping demand curves.
Reindustrialisation is back on the strategic agenda.

In this environment, competitive advantage won’t be defined solely by innovation ecosystems or capital flows.

It will be defined by energy systems - their cost base, carbon profile, resilience, and ability to scale with industrial demand.

Countries are no longer competing only on technology.

They’re competing on the infrastructure that enables it.

And nuclear?

It has moved beyond ideology.
It is emerging as strategic infrastructure - a foundation for industrial policy, energy security, and long‑term competitiveness.

The countries that recognise this early won’t just decarbonise more effectively.

They’ll set the terms of the next era of economic leadership.

This isn’t a data centre story

It’s an infrastructure convergence

What we’re seeing is the convergence of three systems:

Energy (nuclear baseload)
Compute (AI-driven data centres)
Capital (infrastructure + private equity)

Individually, each is capital intensive.

Together, they become mutually reinforcing.

Nuclear provides stability.
Data centres provide demand certainty.
Capital provides scale.

Co-location is the interface where all three meet.

And it solves multiple problems at once:

• Grid congestion
• Decarbonisation pressure
• AI electricity demand
• Long-term asset utilisation

This is how the next generation of infrastructure will be built:

Not in silos.
But as integrated systems designed from day one.

Data centres are the factories of the digital age.

And electricity is the new industrial feedstock.

The map below brings forward an important opportunity that isn’t yet fully reflected in many conversations about AI and digital infrastructure.

The AI build‑out now behaves like an energy‑intensive industrial sector, not a traditional digital one.

The largest clusters tend to emerge where four structural advantages intersect:

1. Affordable, reliable electricity: Hyperscale operators prioritise power availability and stability above nearly everything else.

2. Dense fibre connectivity: Low-latency networks remain essential for cloud platforms and AI workloads.

3. Cooling advantages: Access to water resources or favourable climates can materially reduce operating costs.

4. Policy alignment: Tax incentives, zoning frameworks, and permitting speed often determine where capital ultimately flows.

These dynamics are now reshaping energy systems.

In the U.S. alone, data centre electricity demand could double by 2030, and similar trajectories are emerging across Europe and Asia.

That creates a new energy reality:

The real contest won’t be for chips or algorithms. 
It will be for firm, scalable power.

And this is where nuclear re-enters the conversation.

AI’s round‑the‑clock demand is compressing delivery timelines and shifting infrastructure toward modular, factory‑driven construction. Nuclear is adapting to this new reality - moving from bespoke megaprojects to faster, standardised, repeatable builds.

Data centres are the factories of the AI economy.
Electricity is the new industrial feedstock.
Countries that secure both will lead the next phase of digital infrastructure.

Nuclear is entering a positive new phase where state ambition and private capital can work in tandem to scale faster than ever.

AI doesn’t run on code

It runs on electricity

AI is often framed as a software problem.

At scale, it’s an infrastructure problem.

And more precisely - an energy problem.

As Vaclav Smil outlines in Energy and Civilization: A History, every major technological leap has been underwritten by a shift in energy systems:

Steam → enabled industrial scale
Oil → unlocked global mobility
Electricity → powered computation
AI → demands power density and uptime at unprecedented levels

This is where the narrative starts to diverge from reality.

Hyperscale data centres are no longer “digital infrastructure.”
They are energy-intensive industrial assets.

And their primary constraint is not compute.

It is electricity.

Not just any electricity - 
firm, scalable, always-on power.

Because at this level:

Intermittency becomes operational risk
Grid constraints become growth constraints
Energy strategy becomes business strategy

Which leads to a simple conclusion:

The next generation of AI infrastructure will be determined by access to energy - not algorithms.

And today, the technology that operates at the intersection of:

high energy density
system reliability
long-term cost stability

Nuclear.

The organisations that recognise this early will shape the next decade of digital infrastructure.

“Civilisations don’t rise on ideals - they rise on energy.”

That line kept echoing as I revisited Rhodes’ account of how we scaled power over four centuries.

From wood → coal → oil → electricity → nuclear, each step didn’t replace the last.

It expanded what humanity could do.

His core point:

- Energy transitions are not substitutions
- They are additions that unlock scale

And nuclear stands apart because:

1. It is the first energy source not constrained by geography
2. It is orders of magnitude denser than fossil fuels
3. It can scale without proportional environmental damage

Rhodes argues that nuclear is the only energy source capable of delivering prosperity at scale without inflicting planetary‑level damage.

Which raises a deeper question:

Will nuclear be the only energy technology capable of sustaining civilisation for centuries to come?

This isn’t a robotics story.

It’s an operating model shift.

AI + Robotics are redefining how work gets executed in high-hazard, high-reliability environments.

Not incrementally. Structurally.

The asymmetry is clear:

Routine inspections → automated 
Radiation-area tasks → remotely executed
Outage support → precision-driven
New build → moving toward repeatable, systemised delivery

The outcome is not only efficiency.

It’s a step change in:

→ Dose exposure
→ Asset uptime
→ Fleet-wide standardisation

We’re moving from craft-based execution → engineered execution.

That’s the real transition.

A Majority of EU Citizens Support Nuclear Energy 💙

The top 5 most pro-nuclear countries:
1️⃣ Czechia (77%)
2️⃣ Finland (71%)
3️⃣ Poland (69%)
4️⃣ Denmark (66%)
5️⃣ France (66%)

These numbers come from a European Commission survey (Special Eurobarometer 557) asking Europeans:

“Do you think nuclear energy will have a positive, negative, or no effect on our way of life in the next 20 years?”

Compared with the same survey four years earlier, positive attitudes toward nuclear increased by 10 percentage points.

The country that saw the biggest increase is surprisingly Denmark. Positive attitudes among Danes rose by 44 percentage points, from 22% to 66%. This enormous shift places Denmark in the top 5 most pro-nuclear countries in the EU.

This is a country that banned nuclear energy for electricity production in 1999 and kept it out of national energy planning since 1985.

One thing is clear: EU citizens increasingly support nuclear energy, and the trend is only growing.
