I help leaders and teams make sense of what is really going on so they can move their strategy forward with clarity and confidence. To me, strategy has never been about copying what works for others (or worse, about slides).  I believe strategy is about understanding human motivations, competing perspectives, and assumptions (sometimes unarticulated) that shape everyday choices. 

My path has never been linear. I began in pharma because I loved the empirical nature of scientific thinking, and I wanted to contribute to something that genuinely helps people. Later, I moved into strategic and digital marketing, where I discovered behavioural sciences and learned to apply analytical tools to help decision-making. One of my favourite roles was in innovation management in the NHS, helping clinicians turn their ideas into marketed products. 

Across all of these roles, I noticed the same pattern showing up. Strategy gets stuck when the situation isn’t fully understood, when people see things differently, and when important points are being missed. That’s what drew me into this work. I’m at my best when I’m helping someone untangle complex issues and expose hidden connections. 

I now work with leaders who want a thinking partner, someone who can help through the noise and get to the heart of the issue without overcomplicating it. Sometimes that means a one-to-one conversation; other times it means bringing in the right perspectives from across the organisation. Either way, the goal is the same, to make decisions you can actually believe in and a practical path you can move forward on.

A few days ago, I mentioned #OpenStrategy to a business owner.
He was instantly dismissive. His organisation, he implied, was not going to be “opened up.”

That reaction made me realise one thing. Openness in strategy is often misunderstood as a choice.

I’m increasingly convinced it isn’t. Openness is a condition. It is the way strategy exists in 2026.
(I’ve written elsewhere about the historical shifts in strategy and will link to that in the comments.)

Today, information is ubiquitous. People no longer wait for information to be interpreted and packaged by leadership before forming an opinion.
And right now, AI accelerates this dramatically.

Where confusion once led to a conversation with colleagues at the water cooler, it now leads to a prompt. AI helps people structure their thinking, interrogate business information, translate financial language and examine the reasoning behind leadership decisions.

AI does not actually give people decision rights. But it gives them greater capability to interpret information. And that changes things. 

Sense-making is no longer scarce. So when leaders attempt to “close” strategy, usually by enforcing command-and-control within a hierarchy, they are not closing off information. They are trying to reduce participation, which means to close the circle of strategy involvement, in a world where interpretation is already distributed.

To make matters more confusing for leaders is that the tension rarely shows up as open push-back from subordinates. It usually shows up more subtly as withdrawal, scattered priorities, busyness without moving the needle.
Very often, the form it takes is as competing narratives about what the company is *really* doing.

Dismissing AI-assisted thinking as “dangerous” will also not make it disappear. Nor will tightening control restore clarity. 

When everyone can generate compelling narratives about strategy, the legitimacy of leadership no longer rests on who knows the most.
 
The critical differentiator will instead be HOW strategy is made. Specifically, how choices are clarified, disagreement is handled, how assumptions are exposed and tested, and, maybe most importantly, how trust and commitment are created.

To get to the point, the real question is not whether or not to open up.
It is how intentionally we design a strategy process that channels participation in a world that is already open.

Strategist | Sense maker | Strategic choices clarifier

Sometimes I think of strategy as a trampoline on which the pieces, that make up the whole, bounce high into the air.

When someone steps back and watches carefully, they can begin to see how the pieces fit together. An organisational leader usually performs this role.

An even better situation arises when the whole team is allowed to observe the bouncing pieces.

Every team member observes the pieces from a different angle. Each person also has their own filter. Some notice risks first. Others see opportunity. Some see patterns. Others see anomalies.

It is critical to make everyone aware of the fact that we notice things differently, so the team can work together to make sense of the whole.

Seen like this, it becomes clear that a single perspective - even taken by the most experienced one - could never outperform a diverse team committed to sense-making.

There is also a practical constraint; the leader cannot stand by the trampoline all day. They have other responsibilities. Allowing the team to take turns observing the ever-changing constellation of pieces creates real strategic advantage.

The challenge is to channel these valuable insights into “buckets” so they can be analysed at the right time. There is a legitimate worry that if everyone keeps observing, no work will get done. That’s why there needs to be a process.

Strategy is both the trampoline and the process around it.

As Mintzberg reminds us, strategy is pattern AND perspective. Strategy isn't just a plan or the logic behind it; it emerges from what we notice and how we interpret it.

For practitioners, one simple action to take is to ask team members to record observations they believe are important. These can form the basis of regular strategy conversations.

Another step is to turn those observations into a narrative. Shared externally (thoughtfully and with agreement by the leadership), they become breadcrumbs. Over time, customers and employees alike can follow these breadcrumbs and create a sense of what the organisation is really about.

No cheap slogans required.

Just careful observation, disciplined sense-making, and the courage to let others see how you think.
