Schlumberger promoted me to Business Unit Manager in Saudi Arabia.

My job: Build the first CoilTOOLS department from zero.

Day one, I walked into a room full of engineers.

Most had 20+ years of experience. 
I had a title and zero credibility.

I stayed out of their technical decisions. 
They were the experts. Not me.

18 months later, we went from zero to 30 people.

Revenue grew beyond projections. 
The team became one of the most respected in the region.

Not because I led with experience. 
Because I made experienced people more effective.

The lesson?

Leadership isn't about being the smartest person in the room.

It's about making the smartest people in the room better at what they do.
If you're leading people who know more than you, don't pretend you don't.

Ask what they need. 
Then move heaven and earth to get it for them.

At the end of the day, your title might get erased from the org chart.

I was running a $1B operation with 2,000 employees.

The world was shutting down. Oil prices were collapsing.

Then our largest client called.
They were canceling a $200M contract.

My leadership team gathered in the conference room.

Everyone looked at me for answers.
And for the first time in my career, I said: "I don't know what to do."

The room went silent.

I could see the fear in their eyes. 
Their leader just admitted he didn't have the answer.

But then something happened.

Our operations manager leaned forward:

It's the foundation of real leadership.
When you admit you don't know, you give your team permission to step up.

That's when the magic happens.

After 20 years in Fortune 500 and startups, I've seen the same pattern: 

Leaders who've built everything they wanted.
But feel nothing like they expected.

Revenue up. Team growing. Board happy.

Yet something's missing.

This is the success paradox.

You optimized your business for growth.
But you forgot to optimize yourself for fulfilment.
