I was asked to lead the Dole VA supply chain service in December of 2017.

3 of the service's greatest achievements during my time in this role:

We scored in the top 5 in the country for our customer service.

The service reduced supply spend by 28%. Through spend analysis coupled with increased focus on inventory management principles and collaboration with vendors, we reduced spend drastically which allowed freed up resources to be allocated elsewhere as needed for Veteran care.

We did not run out of supplies including PPE for medical staff during the darkest days of the COVID pandemic for hospital supply chains. Leadership, great staff, including a very collaborative medical staff, and community support was crucial for this achievement.

Chief Supply Chain Officer

The Prosthetics service at the VA not only provides artificial limbs to Veterans, it is responsible for the management and issue to Veterans of all devices needed to assist Veterans to live as functionally as possible. This includes electric wheelchairs, wheelchair vans, orthotic shoes, canes, scooters, surgical implants and so much more. 

The service was unique in that it was a Veteran facing service with its Prosthetics and orthotics clinics and also a supply chain service managing and providing Prosthetic items.

Some of the service's greatest achievements during my time in this role:

Established a Prosthetics clinic. We recruited and retained a very talented Prosthetist who hit the ground running. Amputee Veterans now have an option right there at the Wichita VA for their artificial limb care and maintenance. 

Reduced average days before action was taken on a prosthetics consult dramatically. This was a big one for customer service and getting the Veteran's needs taken care of timely.

I learned quite a bit about managing and leading during this time.

What an eye opener! I learned so much from my boss and colleagues about how the fiscal system at the VA works.

I grew up in a 5th generation business. That may sound impressive but it was very much a humble, mom-and-pop blue collar business. It was all I knew growing up, and going into college I thought I would eventually become the 6th generation. 

Spoiler: I am not the 6th generation, and I never dreamed of one day helping business owners with financial and exit planning.

It wasn’t until after seeing what my parents went through with their exit, that it became clear what I wanted to do. 

You see, my mom and dad both played equal parts in the business, so when my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s my junior year of high school we knew changes would have to be made. The problem was, my parents had never done any financial planning or exit planning. There was no LTC insurance for my mom so my dad would have to become the primary caretaker for her. That meant being forced to step away from the business. There had not been succession planning, so I (at age 19) was not fully prepared to take over operations, and certainly didn’t have enough money (or access to) to begin buying my parents out. 

So they sold at a discount to competitors. They got lucky and made it out ok, but they could have been a lot better off. 

I learned a lot going through that experience, mainly that you don’t always get to choose your exit, so it pays to put together a plan for your finances and business that can withstand life’s unexpected curveballs. 

That is why I set out to be “the guy my parents wish had come along 15 years ago”

When I’m not working with business owners, you can find me knee deep in a creek with a fly rod in hand (likely with one of my two kids strapped onto my back), cooking up new recipes with my wife, or tinkering on the farm.
