Deeply researched product, growth, and career advice

My biggest takeaway from Chip Huyen: 

1. Most AI product problems aren’t AI problems. When companies think they have an AI performance issue, it’s usually a user experience problem, an organizational communication gap, or a data quality issue. One company thought their AI lead scoring system was broken, but the real issue was that the marketing team wasn’t asking the right questions to get useful data.

2. Your best performers benefit most from AI tools. In a controlled experiment, the highest-performing engineers got the biggest productivity boost from AI coding assistants, not the lowest performers. Senior engineers who already knew how to solve problems used AI to work even faster, while low performers often just copied and pasted code they didn’t understand.

3. How you prepare your data matters more than which database you choose. Companies see their biggest AI performance gains from better organizing and preparing their information—breaking content into the right size chunks, adding summaries, converting content into question-and-answer format—rather than agonizing over which technical infrastructure to use.

4. The biggest improvements to your AI product come from talking to users and understanding their feedback, not from adopting the latest models or staying glued to AI news. Many companies waste time debating which technology to use, when the real wins come from better user experience and data preparation.

5. Fine-tuning should be your last resort. Before investing in fine-tuning a model, try simpler solutions first: improve your prompts, add basic post-processing scripts, or fix your data pipeline. One company caught 90% of its model’s mistakes with a simple script. Fine-tuning creates ongoing maintenance headaches and should only be used when everything else has been maxed out.

6. You don’t need to be perfect to win. Many successful companies choose “good enough” over perfect when implementing AI systems. They calculate whether investing two engineers to improve accuracy from 80% to 85% is better than using those same engineers to launch an entirely new feature. Often, the new feature provides more value.

7. AI productivity is nearly impossible to measure. Companies invest heavily in AI coding tools but can’t clearly prove they work. When forced to choose between expensive AI subscriptions for their team or hiring one additional person, many managers choose the person, not necessarily because AI doesn’t help but because headcount feels more tangible.

8. Many people don’t know what to build despite having powerful tools. Even with AI tools that can build almost anything, many employees face an “idea crisis”—they simply don’t know what to create. The best approach: spend a week noticing what frustrates you in your daily work, then build small tools to solve those specific pain points.

There’s one community I would love to be a part of. 

But it'll never happen. 

The community is called Chief and it’s the premier network for executive-level women. A place where female leaders build strength together and lift each other higher.

I’m a man, which means I’ll never be a member.
I’ll never have a pair of those iconic custom green shoes they make for members. 

But that doesn’t mean I haven’t benefited from the incredible women inside that community.

In fact, there are 116 Chief members in my own network (not by design, not intentionally, just pure coincidence). 

When I launched my business back in August 2023, I had no idea if it would work. But a Chief named Mariana Saddakni thought otherwise and invited me to speak to an intimate group of ~200–300 Chiefs. 

That was one of my first real opportunities to share what I do and I spent hours preparing because I wanted to deliver something worthy of the moment.

Fast forward almost exactly two years…

My friend Amy Reinert invited me back for a conversation with the Chief community.

It feels like a full-circle moment.
Two years ago, I was just getting started.
Now, I get to share what I’ve learned along the way.

I've always said that "the more female leaders there are in business, the better business will be" and I mean it.

My entire life, I've been an all-or-nothing person. 

I was either running 5 miles or no miles.
I was either eating a whole bag of chips or none.
I was either having a bunch of beers or zero.  

But if there’s one thing that consistent exercise over the last two years has taught me that anything in moderation is okay. 

That never used to be the way I lived. 

This weekend I went camping with my son, some of his friends, and their dads and I allowed myself to indulge in one of my favorite things:

potato chips 

(My faves: salt ‘n vinegar, jalapeño, flamin’ hot) 

After losing ~60lbs in 2 years of consistent exercise, I'm learning that sustainable weight loss doesn't happen by restricting yourself completely from the things that you love. 

It just means practicing moderation intentionally. 

I was back in the gym this morning and will be back on my high-protein, balanced diet today, too.

Because that’s what made it so I could climb the hills, get in the canoe, and run around with them all weekend. 

That’s been the difference between me being able to zip up our vest vs. not. 

It feels really good to be healthy for my kids.

I’ve been posting on LinkedIn almost daily for 6 years and built a pretty sizable following of ~47,000 in that time. I’ve also seen many other people build followings 2-3x mine in 1/3 the time. 

They say they did so organically without collusion through engagement pods or growth hacks, but I know better. 

Unfortunately, many people don’t see through their BS and fall for their disingenuous claims hook, line, and sinker. 

I’d be lying if I said it didn’t drive me nuts, but it will never drive me to change how I grow here:

- Being myself
- Building relationships 
- Sharing what I know freely
- Taking interest in & supporting others
- Having faith that doing it right pays off long-term

And posts like this one from Celeste Berke Knisely, MTA serve as reminders that:

1) I am doing it right. 
2) There are plenty of smart people who see through the shenanigans of various gurus here. 

People like Celeste are the reason I’m here. 

Remember: 

Comparison is the thief of joy. 
Every human has a story to tell & value to add.

You don’t need a bazillion followers to find opportunity and success on LinkedIn. 

You need a strategy for building the RIGHT audience.

And that is what I’m proud to teach.

Just finished Hell Week at my gym. 

Those are words I never thought I’d say. 

I started working out 2.5 years ago at 347lbs.

3x per week at first. 
4x per week next.
5x per week now (sometimes 6x).

I’m down to 290lbs. 
I’m in the 1000lb club. 
I’m stronger than I’ve ever been. 

At 42 years old. 

It’s only downhill from 40 if you let it be. 

Compression leg thingies help. 

Cheers to getting stronger and building better health habits day-by-day. Consistency & patience goes a long way.

So many people on LinkedIn posting content “hacks.” 

I despise the word “hack” because hacking is not a strategy, it’s a shortcut and most things worth doing require hard work, consistency, and patience — the opposite of a hack. 

Your personal brand is your legacy. 

Do you really want to hack it?

Try this instead:

“Just checking to see if you got my email” 

(because I think you’re too stupid to know that I have a tool that tells me that)

Do better salespeople. Try social selling intead...

I used to regret not going into marketing.

Spent 15 years in operations at startups, always thinking "I should have been in marketing. I love branding, consumer behavior, understanding how people process information."

Then 2020 happened.

Started posting content on LinkedIn because I wasn't spending time anywhere else online.

In 2021, a CMO reached out about a job.

During the interview, he said: "I have this other position I've been thinking about. I don't have a job description, but I think you're perfect for it."

He wanted someone with sales ops experience who could also understand brand marketing.

"Why are you talking to me?" I asked. "I don't have 'brand' or 'marketing' on my resume."

"I've been following you on LinkedIn for six months. If you can do what you do there for us, you're going to be great."

That's when I realized: all those years in operations weren't wasted.

They were preparation.

Now I help entrepreneurs and executives with both personal branding AND business operations.

Because guess what? My operations background makes me better at marketing, not worse.

Sometimes what feels like the "wrong" path is actually building the exact skills you'll need later.

I’m doing a lot of deep work on mindset lately with Josh Perry (def follow him if you aren’t already) and learning a ton. 

Together we have discovered that my natural state is best described as “let’s not get too comfortable in case the shoe drops” mixed with “let’s worry a bunch about the shoe dropping.”

Which is a pretty shitty natural state to be in. 

I struggle to “just be” and not let anxiety or fear be the cloud that follows me around all day, even though nothing bad is actually happening and I have no reason to worry. 

Turns out moving to a new country with a solo parent at 13 and going to 3 high schools in 4 years cemented a feeling of being unsettled deep within my brain chemistry.

Who knew?

One of the things I find really helpful is talking to myself—sounds weird, I know, but it’s in my head (most of the time). 

Last night I was walking my dog, Lucky, and I started feeling anxious and my head filled with “what if.”

Instead of letting those thoughts spiral, I just pressed the stop button and said: 

“it’s okay to be okay.” 

It serves as a reminder that we don’t have to always be looking for or worrying about something other than where we are right now. 

And that feels really good. 

Josh also gave me another phrase that I now say often: “don’t should all over yourself.” 

If you’ve never tracked how often you “should” yourself daily, I highly recommend doing so. It’s wild. 

One of the most valuable books I've ever read was "Self-Compassion" by Kristin Neff. In it, she points out that so often when somebody comes to us with a challenge or sad thoughts, we comfort them, telling them it's going to be okay. 

But when it's ourselves, we don't. We tend to be empathetic with other people, but not ourselves. 

Learning to be kind to myself and show myself compassion has been a really important lesson for me.

There are so many cool humans on substack and Jennifer Hong is one of the coolest. She and I banter often about many things, but especially LinkedIn, which she detests and I love (as you know). 

We will find common ground eventually! Or, we will just unite around a mutual disdain for Facebook & X. 

Regardless, Jennifer was nice enough to feature me in her latest issue of The Natural Intelligence in which she asks 20 questions about AI to people she thinks have interesting answers.

I have a confession: i'm not a natural born salesperson. It's why I spent the majority of my career in sales operations and not on the front lines of sales. And yet, somehow I've managed to build a multiple six-figure business as a solopreneur. How? Because I think that people find my lack of "salesy-ness" refreshing. It's also why personal branding & social selling are my thing. 

Personal brand is the very top of the funnel. 

Social selling is more middle of funnel, and if you make it feel more like socializing than selling, you'll usually do okay. 

At least, that's how I rationalize it to myself :) 

Could I have MORE business if I pitched more? Yes. 
Would I enjoy my job as much? Nope. 

There's no single "right way" to do it other than the way that works best for you. 

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

You know how sometimes when something changes, you immediately forget what it used to look like? That's how I'm feeling about profile views on LinkedIn today. 

Definitely noticed the change in the analytics graph, which now shows you growth in a little pop-up modal.

I also don't recall seeing "Connect" or "Follow" buttons embedded within this view, or am I imagining that?

Assuming this is new, it's a welcome update because it makes it that much easier to connect or follow people who are taking an interest in your profile, which is one of the strongest intent signals there is on LinkedIn. 

One-click connections to people directly in your ICP is a nice update! 

Unless I'm dreaming and this is how it's always been and I'm just paying attention to it now, which I think is unlikely.
