Deeply researched product, growth, and career advice

My biggest takeaway from Chip Huyen: 

1. Most AI product problems aren’t AI problems. When companies think they have an AI performance issue, it’s usually a user experience problem, an organizational communication gap, or a data quality issue. One company thought their AI lead scoring system was broken, but the real issue was that the marketing team wasn’t asking the right questions to get useful data.

2. Your best performers benefit most from AI tools. In a controlled experiment, the highest-performing engineers got the biggest productivity boost from AI coding assistants, not the lowest performers. Senior engineers who already knew how to solve problems used AI to work even faster, while low performers often just copied and pasted code they didn’t understand.

3. How you prepare your data matters more than which database you choose. Companies see their biggest AI performance gains from better organizing and preparing their information—breaking content into the right size chunks, adding summaries, converting content into question-and-answer format—rather than agonizing over which technical infrastructure to use.

4. The biggest improvements to your AI product come from talking to users and understanding their feedback, not from adopting the latest models or staying glued to AI news. Many companies waste time debating which technology to use, when the real wins come from better user experience and data preparation.

5. Fine-tuning should be your last resort. Before investing in fine-tuning a model, try simpler solutions first: improve your prompts, add basic post-processing scripts, or fix your data pipeline. One company caught 90% of its model’s mistakes with a simple script. Fine-tuning creates ongoing maintenance headaches and should only be used when everything else has been maxed out.

6. You don’t need to be perfect to win. Many successful companies choose “good enough” over perfect when implementing AI systems. They calculate whether investing two engineers to improve accuracy from 80% to 85% is better than using those same engineers to launch an entirely new feature. Often, the new feature provides more value.

7. AI productivity is nearly impossible to measure. Companies invest heavily in AI coding tools but can’t clearly prove they work. When forced to choose between expensive AI subscriptions for their team or hiring one additional person, many managers choose the person, not necessarily because AI doesn’t help but because headcount feels more tangible.

8. Many people don’t know what to build despite having powerful tools. Even with AI tools that can build almost anything, many employees face an “idea crisis”—they simply don’t know what to create. The best approach: spend a week noticing what frustrates you in your daily work, then build small tools to solve those specific pain points.

In this role I partnered with LinkedIn's new Global Head of Product, Tomer Cohen, on talent strategy. The Product org at LinkedIn is diverse and the team recruits Product Managers, Product Designers, Strategic Partnerships experts, Journalists for LinkedIn's growing News team, Customer Support specialists, Content Managers and much more! 

LinkedIn’s mission is to create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce. LinkedIn fundamentally believe everyone deserves a shot, regardless of where you went to school, where you grew up, or what opportunities you’ve had in the past. Which is why I helped to recently launch a new approach to hiring, shining a light on skills not just someone's resume. The new process was piloted on Customer Support Consultant roles based out of LinkedIn's Omaha, Nebraska office. Whether a job seeker is coming from a traditional customer support background or not, they have the opportunity to demonstrate the skills that would make them a successful Customer Support Consultant at LinkedIn leveraging free and optional LinkedIn Learning courses geared towards developing these skills. The best part? Anyone that successfully demonstrates their skills through the hiring process will be guaranteed an interview at LinkedIn. Creating and launching this transformative hiring process in collaboration with Product and the business was an absolute career highlight.

During this time, I partnered with then SVP Product Ryan Roslansky, who is now LinkedIn's CEO, and his Executive team on talent acquisition strategy. In Product, the recruiting team hires the people that design and build the products that help create economic opportunity for LinkedIn's members and customers.  

During this period I led the Hire workstream for LinkedIn’s acquisition Glint, successfully integrating Glint’s hiring into LinkedIn’s recruiting org. By partnering with the Product Executive team, we totally revamped the Product Management hiring process halving the time that candidates spent in process and improving the overall quality of hire, which we were able to quantify by piloting a Quality of Hire survey in partnership with the People Analytics team.

As Jeff Weiner says, by being more authentic you become more effective. This means you need to be able to bring your whole self to work each day. I like to have fun each day and I was lucky to lead a team of data driven recruiters who connect talent with opportunity while also having fun! The team supported experienced hiring for South East Asia, Hong Kong, Japan, China and Australia businesses. I also partnered with the Talent Solutions and Learning Solutions Leadership Teams across APAC on talent. My purpose is to positively impact someone's career everyday. I have this written on a post-it note stuck to my computer which reminds me on those days that don't go to plan, what's it's all for. 

I love sharing with and learning from our clients on market trends and insights and enjoy facilitating customer roundtables and speaking at events on topics that matter such as Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging.  At LinkedIn we believe diverse teams win and we are passionate about creating inclusion and moments of belonging. 

We are all brand ambassadors and storytellers and my team uses media solutions to socially engage with talent and we are also all custodians of the candidate experience. We have developed an integrated media strategy for our growing markets of Japan, China and Hong Kong. We leverage video to create engagement in our hiring process and moments of connection when candidates come onsite for interviews. Work and life need to integrate and LinkedIn is a company that does allow you to bring your whole self to work. 

I am proud to be part of a program team who built a leadership development program for our high potential female talent at LinkedIn in APAC called EmpowerIn, which we successfully kicked off in July 2017 and now is an ongoing development program in APAC!The first cohort of 31 came from all lines of business and countries in APAC, which was a first and it's been a joy watching these ladies transform since.

China and India were the major growth markets we supported and the APAC Managing Director acknowledged the critical role the TA team played in ensuring that China was able to successfully meet its 2014 expansion plan.

I relocated to Sydney to lead the Onsite Recruitment team at Sanofi, supporting permanent and contract hiring needs in Australia and New Zealand. Sanofi is a leading global healthcare provider across the Pharmaceutical, Consumer Healthcare, Vaccines and Rare Diseases fields. 123 Careers was a Start Up company built to be the exclusive recruitment provider of childcare staff for ABC Learning Centres throughout Australia and New Zealand.  I was the first hire made in Victoria and had the opportunity to source, fit out and build an office, team and culture in Melbourne. As with any start up we built processes, implemented systems all while prioritising the needs of our client to hire quality staff. 123 Careers recruited both qualified permanent and casual childcare workers and my team managed the recruitment needs of over 300 childcare centres in Victoria.

When I joined PageUp I joined a company of 17 people in its start up years. PageUp now delivers HR software that helps a company's employees reach their full potential, anywhere in the world. Starting out in Customer Support, I wore many hats including not only customer support, but working with developers to scope out customer needs and development requests, customer training and facilitating customer user groups.  I was promoted into the role of Relationship Manager where I partnered with many of Australia's largest employers who implemented PageUp to streamline their talent acquisition including always on hiring, graduate programs, volume and project based recruitment. The role enabled me to understand the business drivers and talent priorities of customers to provide best practice consulting on leveraging the technology to attract, recruit and retain talent.
