the holidays are almost here and most families are making their lists

grocery runs
last minute travel
getting the house ready

and in the middle of all of this

youth are still incarcerated

still waking up in cold facilities
still following the same routine
still eating whatever tray is handed to them

thanksgiving is no different 

nothing special
nothing cozy
nothing that feels like home

I recently asked boys who’s getting released and who’s staying in during thanksgiving 

a few smiled with excitement 

others stared at the floor
because they already knew they weren’t leaving

then one young man raised his hand and said

id rather be incarcerated
at least i’ll have food on thanksgiving

my heart dropped

today in america
1 in 5 kids live in food insecure homes

more than 13 million children don’t know if they’ll eat every day

so yes
for some youth, thanksgiving inside a facility
is safer than thanksgiving at home

imagine that being your normal

and while you're 
cooking
decorating
traveling
and rushing to be everywhere at once

there are kids who feel relieved to spend thanksgiving behind bars
because the alternative is hunger

and that should break all of our hearts
