Before Tru Earth I was running this outdoor adventure brand, and with it came a revenue glass ceiling I didn’t even realize was there.

I thought anything over a million dollars a year was incredible. Like, why would you need more than that?

Then I met Matthew Bertulli at a mastermind. Told him my goals. That it was gonna be a slide of the desk business. Just a nice little thing.

Two words. And something clicked.

Everyone's calling Ads in Chat GPT the next Facebook Ads.

The people using ChatGPT today are the same people who used to search on Google. Same audience. Different platform.

The pattern: healthy founders remove complexity

My ADHD brain has 40 tabs open at all times.

Here’s what I do to manage:

- One task at a time. Not “mostly one.” Literally one.
- Physical Pomodoro timer on the desk. Something I can see counting down.
- Dedicated workspace. If you work where you relax, your brain fights you all day.
- Clear the desk every morning. A cluttered desk is a chaotic brain.
- Every notification off. Shopify, Stripe, email, Slack. All of it.
- Phone on permanent sleep mode. Five people can reach me. Everyone else goes to voicemail.
- No email or Slack during a focused block. They can wait.
- No open tabs. I used to have dozens running at all times. MinBrowser fixed that.
- Facebook ads? Go straight to Ads Manager URL. Never through the feed. I've lost hundreds of hours to that scroll.
- Freedom app to block sites during Pomodoro sessions. Even when you get tempted, you can't access them.
- Physical notebook for random ideas. Write them down, close the loop, come back later. Otherwise your brain opens a hundred tabs internally and none of them close.
- Take breaks. Parkinson’s Law is real: work fills the time you give it. If you sit at your desk for 8 hours straight, the last 4 are garbage.

Your brain isn’t broken. 

It just needs a system that works with it instead of against it.

This is first world advice.

If you can’t pay your bills, “build a machine that produces value” won’t help you eat.

You need revenue. Fast.

Maslow’s hierarchy applies to business too.

At the bottom: survive. Solve a problem someone will pay for right now.

Once you’re stable: yes. Build the machine. Think in systems.

Applying $10M thinking to a $10K problem gets you neither.

Building a durable company means stacking real pillars underneath it: DTC, third-party marketplaces, retail, international. 

Four years is enough time to get somewhere. Rarely enough time to build something.

When you’re growing that fast, you’re holding on by the skin of your teeth. The train goes wherever it wants. You’re just hoping not to fly off the caboose.

Every region needs localized packaging, localized payment gateways, localized language.

You can build fast. Just know the difference between building something fast and building something that lasts.

Two things changed the trajectory of my career.

1. Hitting rock bottom.

- Built a ringtone subscription business. It collapsed.
- Had just bought a house, a condo, and signed an expensive lease.
- Owed the government a pile in taxes.
- Put the tax money into a “regulated” forex opportunity.
- Forex collapsed too.
- Bailiff showed up to seize my SUV.
- I was driving around screaming from stress.

2. Choosing commitment.

- Standing in the shower one morning. Full messaging framework for Tru Earth just clicked.
- The product seemed too cheap to scale. But at that moment, the entire positioning downloaded.
- Voice-noted the whole thing before I dried off.
- That messaging carried Tru Earth for years.

If you can, choose #2.

But if you’ve already hit #1, the clarity that comes from survival mode is real.

The bottleneck isn’t taste, intelligence or creative systems.

Most people online are so vanilla. They don’t expose their interests or say anything controversial. 

They just share business stuff.

Look at Hormozi. Grows his hair, grows his beard, always wears a tank top, works out like a motherf*cker. Says a lot of controversial stuff. I bet you half of it he doesn’t even mean. But people align with it.

Because when everything starts looking the same, nobody’s attracted to you because they don’t feel like they have anything in common with you outside of “I'm this hard working, grinding” guy.

My kids already say everything’s AI this, AI that.

We're heading back to a place where people follow and listen to people who are clearly real. You’ll get verified by being authentic.

Founders sand off every edge that would make someone actually give a sh*t about them.

You've got maybe 1000 days before AI levels this whole playing field.

A friend of mine runs a supplement brand doing solid numbers in the US.

About six months ago he started noticing something unusual in his analytics. Consistent traffic from Canada. Not paid. Organic. People were finding him through social media and word of mouth across the border.

He was excited for about ten minutes.

Then reality set in. His US-based 3PL wouldn't ship north without brutal surcharges. The few orders he managed to fulfill took two to three weeks and arrived with surprise customs fees that destroyed the customer experience on delivery.

So he watched the traffic. Every week. Canadian visitors showing up, bouncing at checkout, leaving.

He described it as watching revenue walk out the door through a window he couldn't open.

Landing pages are basically first dates.

You can say all the right things, look great, check every box.

Then you make one claim that's slightly too big and the whole thing falls apart.

Believability is more important than impressiveness. Always has been.

Entrepreneurs don’t like to admit this:

The janitor probably has a better life than you do.

For a few months after I stepped away from the day to day at Tru Earth, I'd be at the gym in the morning and my brain would start screaming at me:

You gotta get to your desk. You gotta get to your desk. You gotta get to your desk.

And I'd be standing there mid-set going... What desk? I don't have a desk to get to anymore.

That voice wasn't rational. 
It was just years of training. 
Years of being always on. 
Years of every morning being about the next fire, the next hire problem, the next thing that needed me specifically to figure it out.

You don't realize how much that costs you psychologically until you stop paying it.

When you're in the middle of it, you think everybody operates like this. You think this is just what it takes. 

- Managing people who won't be in the same room anymore because they don't like each other.
- Solving problems with no clean answer.
- Carrying decisions home every single night and pretending you're present with your family when your head is still at the office.

And then there's the janitor.

The janitor:
- Shows up
- Checks every box on the list
- Walks out at 5 o'clock
- Doesn't think about it again until tomorrow

No mental load. 
No 2am problem solving. 
No Slack notifications at dinner.

A lot of entrepreneurs look down on that. 

I think that's wrong.

Not everybody should be an entrepreneur. Not everybody values the same things. And the person who doesn't take work home with them? They're arguably wealthier in the one thing every founder eventually realizes matters most...

Time. 

And the ability to actually be present inside of it.

If you’re building something right now and you feel this weight every single day, I’m not telling you to quit. I’m telling you to notice this.

Because the cost is real.

My kids are only young once. It's been really nice to just be there. Not thinking about tomorrow's fire. Just hanging out with them and soaking it in.

This is what life is all about.

Nobody tells you the weird part about stepping back from the business you built.

You go from "I'm the CMO of [brand]" to "I'm... working on some stuff."

Your identity was the company. Now you have to figure out who you are without it.

It's a better problem to have than most. But it's still a problem.

I’ve built businesses that did $100K months and ones that did $0 months.

The operator who walks out of the $0 month is someone you couldn’t have built on purpose. 

That only comes from surviving it.

Most operators are optimizing against themselves.

A friend of mine owns this little café I like to visit from time to time.

I use it before Figma ever opens.

When a B2B founder comes to us for a website or a rebrand, the first thing I do is run their current messaging through Claude. Not to rewrite it, to stress test it.

Where is it vague?
Where does it sound like every competitor in the space?
Where would an enterprise buyer lose interest and leave?

Then I use it to explore positioning. Not final copy, thinking tools.

Five different ways to frame the same product, so I can test which one actually lands with their buyers.

By the time I open Figma, I already know who we’re designing for, what they need to hear, and where the current experience is failing them.

The layout isn’t a guess.
The hierarchy isn’t arbitrary.

Every design decision is backed by a strategic foundation that was tested before a single element gets placed.

Most AI + design conversations are about speed, how fast you can generate screens, how quickly you can go from prompt to prototype.

Speed matters.

But the most expensive mistake in design isn’t being slow. It’s building the wrong thing beautifully.

Your brand looks AI-generated.

And it’s costing you enterprise deals.

Generic hero sections that could be swapped between any SaaS company. 

Messaging full of buzzwords: “AI-powered,” “next-generation,” “revolutionary platform.” Websites that look identical to 47 other tools buyers evaluated this quarter.

When you’re asking procurement to bet their career on your 3-year-old company, generic doesn’t cut it.

The problem isn’t that it looks bad. It’s that it looks like everyone else.
Every tool claims to be “AI-powered.” Every landing page uses the same layout. Every brand voice sounds like ChatGPT wrote it.
When everything looks the same, they can’t tell who to trust.

Generic brands compete on features. They sound like everyone else because they’re trying to appeal to everyone.

Distinct brands compete on point of view. They know exactly who they serve.

Example:

Generic brand: “We help teams collaborate better.”
Distinct brand: “Built for legal teams managing 100+ contract versions across time zones.”

One could be anyone. One is for someone specific.

Enterprise buyers don’t want the safest choice. They want the right choice.

And being “right” means having an opinion. Making choices. Taking a stand.

AI can generate your logo and write your homepage. But it can’t give you a point of view.

If your brand could be anyone’s, it’s no one’s.

Stop optimizing for mass appeal. Start optimizing for the specific people who need exactly what you built.

Your portfolio gets you the interview.

But here’s what actually gets you hired: how you talk about the work.

I’ve watched designers present beautiful portfolios and lose the role in 5 minutes.

Why? They can’t explain their decisions.

They say “I designed this” but can’t answer:
Why this solution over the others?
What constraint shaped this direction?
What would you change if you did it again?
How did you know it was working?

The pattern I see:

Designers who only show final work can’t talk about process. Because they haven’t practiced articulating their thinking.
Designers who show options, pivots, and failures? They have the language ready.

They can defend decisions. They can explain tradeoffs. They can show judgment.

And in 2026, this matters more than ever:

AI can generate polished screens. But it can’t explain why option A works better than option B for your specific constraint.

If you can’t articulate your reasoning, you’re just executing. And execution is getting automated.

Your portfolio isn’t just showing work. It’s teaching you how to talk about design.

If you can’t explain why you made the choices you made, the work doesn’t matter.

What to include:

Not just the rejected ideas. The why behind them:

“Option A looked better but required 3 clicks to checkout. Option B was plain but converted. We shipped B.”
“Engineering said 2 weeks max, so we dropped the custom UI and used what iOS already had.”
“Tabs looked clean but users never explored them, switched to a single page instead.”

These sentences prove you think strategically.

The portfolio is your script. Write one that shows you can navigate complexity.

Because the designers who survive aren’t the ones with the prettiest portfolios. They’re the ones who can explain their thinking better than AI can generate alternatives.

The best AI product I’ve seen this year looks boring on purpose.

No gradients. No animations. No “magic” language. Just clear data sources, confidence scores, and an audit trail.

Because enterprise AI can’t feel like magic.

Magic means unpredictable.
Unpredictable means risk.

If you’re building AI for enterprise buyers, your product has to answer trust questions before it shows capabilities.

Enterprise teams don’t ask, “How smart is your AI?”
They ask where their data goes.
Can they audit the decisions.
What happens when it’s wrong.
How they explain this to their board.

Consumer AI can get away with being a black box.
Show a prompt, get an answer, done.

Enterprise AI can’t work that way.

Enterprise buyers are responsible for outcomes. If the AI makes a mistake, they’re the ones explaining it to leadership, compliance, or regulators.

That changes how you design your product.

Don’t just display results. Show what data the AI used.
“Based on your last 90 days of sales data, here’s what I found.”

Don’t hide uncertainty. Enterprise teams would rather know you’re 80% confident than assume you’re 100% and be wrong.

Make it clear what the AI can and can’t do. Not just what it does, but what it won’t do.

Let humans step in where it matters. Show where approval is required, especially for decisions that affect compliance or budget.

Enterprise teams need to prove decisions to auditors and boards. If your product can’t explain how the AI reached an answer, it’s useless in regulated environments.

Consumer AI optimizes for delight.
Enterprise AI optimizes for trust.

Most AI startups lose enterprise deals not because the technology isn’t good enough.
But because their product doesn’t answer the questions procurement teams are actually asking.

Design for trust first. Magic second.

Most B2B products fail at design in the same way.

They design for features instead of trust.

They list everything the platform can do. But they never answer the question users are actually asking:

"Can I trust this enough to make a decision here?"

This is especially true when the stakes are high; legal, financial, healthcare, hiring.

Prospects and users aren't just browsing. They're evaluating credibility in seconds. And if your interface feels cluttered, outdated, or generic, they leave before they ever test the product.

That's exactly the challenge LawPair came to us with.

They were building a legal marketplace to help individuals and businesses find the right lawyer. The product was clear. But the experience needed to earn trust from both sides, people making high-stakes legal decisions and lawyers putting their reputation on a platform.

Here's how we approached it:

We started with the brand, not the interface. Before designing a single screen, we built a visual identity that signals maturity and credibility. In legal, if your platform looks like a startup experiment, nobody lists their practice on it and nobody hires through it.

We redesigned how lawyer profiles work. Most legal directories dump credentials into a wall of text. We structured profiles around what users actually need to decide: practice areas, availability, jurisdiction, and contact. Everything that helps them say yes. Nothing that doesn't.

We built search around real decision criteria. Not alphabetical lists. Filters for practice area, location, availability, and meeting format so users find the right fit in seconds instead of scrolling through dozens of irrelevant results.

We designed for both sides of the marketplace. The client experience had to feel clear and reassuring. The lawyer experience had to feel professional and worth their time. Two different audiences, two different sets of trust signals, one cohesive product.

The result is a platform that doesn't just list lawyers, it helps people trust the decision they're about to make.

In any marketplace where stakes are high, brand is not decoration. It's infrastructure.

Stop talking about your product features. Enterprise buyers aren’t looking at them first.

Here’s what actually happens.

A buyer lands on your website. Within seconds, they’ve already decided if you’re credible. Before they read a single line of copy. Before they scroll. Before they even think about your product.

They’re not evaluating features. They’re evaluating you.

Does this company look real? Is this a serious operation or someone’s weekend project? Would I put my reputation on the line by bringing this to my team?

That’s the conversation happening in their head. And your website is either winning it or losing it. 

I’ve worked with B2B founders who spent weeks on their feature pages. The product was well documented. But nobody was getting far enough into the site to read any of it.

The product wasn’t the problem. The first impression was.

Here’s what I’ve seen work across every B2B website we’ve redesigned:

Positioning above the fold that tells the buyer exactly who this is for and why it matters to them. Not what the product does. What the buyer gets.

Social proof that’s impossible to miss. Client logos, real testimonials, recognizable names. Not crowded into a section nobody scrolls to. Right where the eye lands first.

Design that communicates the same level of care you’re asking the buyer to trust you with. If you’re asking someone to sign a six-figure contract, your website can’t look like it cost $500.

The companies that understand this close deals before the first sales call even happens. Their website did the selling. Their product page? That’s confirmation, not persuasion.

If you’re losing enterprise deals and can’t figure out why, stop refining your feature list.

Look at your homepage with fresh eyes and ask one question: would I trust this company with my budget and my reputation based on what I see in the first five seconds?

If the answer isn’t an immediate yes, that’s your problem. Not your product.

If you're asking companies to trust you with million-dollar systems, you can't look small.

That was the challenge with 3-11 Cloud Consulting.

They implement NetSuite. They work with Salesforce. They're moving into AI services for enterprise clients.

High-stakes systems. Million-dollar implementations. Complex integrations that can break businesses if done wrong.

But when prospects landed on their site, the visual signal didn't match the level of expertise behind the business.

In B2B consulting, especially in ERP and CRM transformation, buyers don't hope you're competent.

They scan for proof.

Partnership certifications. Technical authority. Proven implementations. Client success stories. Enterprise credibility. Clear capability signals.

If those elements are buried or poorly presented, you create friction before trust can build.

And when prospects compare you to competitors who showcase those signals front and center, you lose.
