The final #COP30 agreement didn’t mention fossil fuels. But the COP President did — loud and clear.

In his closing statement, he announced plans to form a working group to create the world’s first fossil-fuel transition roadmap, fully guided by science.
And he went even further: openly supporting Colombia’s proposal to host the first global Fossil Fuel Phase-Out Conference for willing countries in April next year.

This is what leadership looks like:
When the text falls short, you speak the truth anyway.

Fossil fuels.

Wow! I just learned that Table.Media has included me in their “Top 100 in Climate 2025.” On the same overall list as Gavin Newsom, Ursula von der Leyen  and the COP President. I genuinely had to read it twice.

I wasn’t familiar with Table.Media before, but I’ve now learned they’re one of Europe’s most influential policy intelligence networks, a kind of briefing system used by ministers, EU commissioners, CEOs, negotiators, think tanks and diplomats.

Their lists aren’t sponsored, lobbied for or crowdsourced. They are editorial decisions about who is shaping the climate agenda.

My first reaction was simply surprise. I didn’t expect this.

Everything we’ve built with We Don't Have Time – our broadcasts reaching millions of viewers, the global community, the pressure, the hope – has always been a collective effort.

A belief that people working together can move systems much larger than themselves.

If this recognition means anything, it’s that:

Our voices are being heard, even in rooms where we didn’t know they were listening.

That gives me energy for 2026 — a year that will demand courage, honesty and connection more than ever.

I rarely feel pride. Almost never.
But watching our COP30 aftermovie 👇… I felt it. Deeply.

Over two intense weeks in Belém, our team and partners did something extraordinary:

We made science impossible to ignore and put science first.

We reached 22.7+ million viewers, produced 60+ hours of live broadcasts, and conducted 100+ interviews.

But numbers alone never show the real story.

There were moments — quiet, unexpected ones — where it felt like something was telling us we were on the right path. A familiar kind of confirmation, if you know it when it appears.

Behind every broadcast and every conversation was something most people will never see: a team giving everything, running on empty, exhausted but refusing to stop because the mission matters even when a fire broke out in the middle of our live broadcast!

I’m exhausted too.

But it was worth it.

And we keep moving forward - no matter what.

Some speakers were on the ground.

Many were thousands of kilometers away.

But we brought them all into the heart of COP; frontline experts, Indigenous leaders, youth voices, business leaders, and world-class scientists who deserved to be heard inside the negotiations.

Together, we turned the inside reality of COP30 into a global signal that couldn’t be ignored.

And the message that defined this COP was clear:
The future must be led by science.

From hundreds of delegates wearing #MakeScienceGreatAgain caps — including the COP30 President — to the rising call for a real fossil fuel phase-out, we saw what happens when communication meets integrity.

Watching Carl Eneroth’s aftermovie, I felt proud of the team.
Proud of our partners. Our speaker.

And yes also proud of myself.

Proud of what we’ve built, what we’re doing, and where we’re taking it.
This film captures the urgency, the energy, and the breakthroughs we witnessed together.

This is what happens when science cuts through politics.

In the very same building where the first United Nations meeting was held in 1947, something remarkable happened again this week. More than 1,200 politicians, business leaders, media figures and cultural voices gathered in Central Hall Westminster to hear ten of the UK’s leading scientists, health experts and security advisers deliver a science led National Emergency Briefing — a clear, uncompromising update on how the climate and nature crisis is already affecting our health, food systems, national security and economy.

The message could not have been clearer:
This is a national emergency. And the public deserves to know the truth.

A huge shout-out to Nick and Simon Oldridge, whose vision and determination made this historic moment possible.

We Don't Have Time was proud to serve as the official media partner, and we’re now releasing interviews, insights and key moments from the event. More content will be published in the coming weeks.

But perhaps the most inspiring part:

What if the chaos we’re seeing right now isn’t a sign of collapse, but a sign that something new is trying to break through? Hear me out 👇

Every complex system behaves the same way when it’s close to transformation:

it flickers.

Old structures resist.
Old powers tighten their grip.
And when they run out of ideas, they turn to the only tool they have left:
more chaos.

It buys them time.
But never a future.

Because flicker isn’t the end of a system.
It’s the moment just before it reorganizes.

And if you look closely, you can feel it everywhere:
	•	politics drifting into noise
	•	information systems losing coherence
	•	institutions struggling to adapt
	•	the climate forcing truth back into the room
	•	societies no longer sharing the same story

It looks like disorder.
But flicker is the signal that the old pattern is breaking and a new one is forming.

And beneath all the noise, something quieter is emerging: kind of clarity that appears only when we pay attention in a more disciplined way.

Not reactive attention.
Not fearful attention.

But discernment: noticing the deeper pattern beneath the turbulence.

Which brings me back to the question that matters:

What happens when intuition, data, and collective understanding begin to move in the same direction?

Because a growing number of people across borders, fields, and traditions are sensing the same shift:
	•	climate security is societal security
	•	information integrity is democratic stability
	•	and no one can navigate what’s coming alone

The flicker is here.
The old order can resist — but it cannot hold.

Transitions always depend on whether the people who can see the emerging pattern manage to recognize one another… even in the chaos.

So let me ask you:
When you look at the turbulence around us, do you see collapse or a system preparing to change?

👇 And if you’ve noticed subtle signs of a new pattern emerging; in climate, society, or how people think I’d genuinely like to hear what you’re seeing. Sometimes the quietest signals are the ones that matter most.

Today! Ten years ago, the #ParisAgreement changed my life. But I had no clue! I remember watching the negotiations and the drama unfold on TV. When the agreement finally came through, I felt genuine joy and relief. I immediately went to social media to share the news. 

I got 4 likes. One was from my wife.

Engagement was almost non-existent. Not because people were evil or indifferent, but because most people simply did not yet understand how serious the climate crisis really was.

That moment stayed with me.

I kept asking myself a simple question: Why does nobody care?

At the time, the world was heading toward around 4°C of warming by the end of the century. Today, that trajectory has been pushed down to 2.5°C.

That shift did not happen by accident. It happened because Paris created direction, pressure, and possibility.

When Donald Trump won the election in 2016, that question turned into clarity. It became obvious to me and my co-founder David Olsson that political leaders were not doing enough, and that large parts of the public were still living in ignorance. I felt a responsibility to act.

That was the starting point of We Don't Have Time

Back then, I could never have imagined that this journey would lead to building one of the world’s largest media platforms for climate action. Or that Christiana Figueres, who carried one of the most important jobs on the planet in Paris, would later become one of our first speakers. Or that Nicholas (Nick) Nuttall, spokesperson for the Paris Agreement, would one day work alongside us.

From the bottom of my heart: thank you to everyone who made Paris possible ten years ago.

Not because it solved the climate crisis, but because it created something that was possible. Something credible. Something that gave us direction.

What we now need to do is to keep pushing, keep dreaming and keep acting to make the #ImpossibleIsPossible

From 4 degrees, to 2.5, to the impossible 1.5.

The next decade matters even more than the last. 💚

COP30 was not another Copenhagen. And it was definitely not a second Paris. It was something no one has witnessed in thirty years of climate summits.
 
The final text was weak. The words “fossil fuel” vanished in the final hours. But beneath the text, the tectonic plates shifted.

For the first time in history, a COP President refused to hide behind consensus. When the text buried the truth, he unearthed it from the closing podium:

“As a president for COP30 I will create a roadmap for transition away from fossil fuels.. ../.. they will be led by science”
 
Then he did the unthinkable:
 
He launched a working group where he invited more than 85 willing countries and publicly endorsed Colombia’s proposal for the world’s first Global Fossil Fuel Phase-Out Conference in April 2026, co-hosted with the Netherlands.

No previous COP President has ever broken the wall like that.

And for the first time, the country that halted the plenary was not a petrostate defending oil. It was Colombia — an oil producer — demanding more ambition.

Flag raised. Ignored. Raised again. Ignored again. Third time, backed by Latin American nations, they forced the session to suspend.
Not to weaken the deal, but to defend science. History will record that reversal.

Belém felt raw from the first day
 
Indigenous leaders tried to force their way past security because they are already living the collapse.

Brazilian scientists warned the Amazon is inches from irreversible tipping. 
Hundreds of delegates, and the COP President himself put on our #MakeScienceGreatAgain caps and literally wore the demand for science on their heads.

When fire broke out and our live broadcast died, it no longer felt accidental, it felt like the metaphor we all needed.

Meanwhile the superpowers went silent or absent
 
China quietly blocked stronger language behind closed doors. The United States, the world’s largest historical emitter and economy, was not even there. When the biggest players step away from the Paris framework, the myth of 100 % consensus collapses in plain sight.

Belém exposed it mercilessly

Yet in that exposure something beautiful happened: the gap between reality and illusion became impossible to ignore.

On our final We Don’t Have Time broadcast on 21 November, hours before the chaotic close, I said:

Capital doesn’t negotiate #COP30 language, it prices outcomes. A new Morgan Stanley survey of 950+ institutional investors shows that more than 80% expect to increase allocations to sustainable investments over the next two years. This includes large asset owners and managers stewarding tens of trillions of dollars.

The shift is happening despite the “ESG backlash” narrative and is strongest in North America.

At COP30, the words “fossil fuel” disappeared from the final text.

But outside consensus, more than 80 countries backed a roadmap away from fossil fuels.

Markets didn’t wait.

They are widening valuation gaps, rerouting capital, and pricing transition credibility directly into discount rates.

This is how phase-outs actually happen:  not as a single political decision,
 but as a financial repricing.

Still, today’s interruption is a reminder of how quickly unexpected events can disrupt even the most carefully planned moments. And while this particular incident had nothing to do with climate, the reality is that climate-related disruptions will become more common in the years ahead. It is a signal of the kind of resilience the world will need, including here at COP, to stay focused on the task at hand.
