Most startups don't fail.

Why Secondaries Are So Attractive Right Now

Venture is back.

But not in the way most people think.

2025 looked like a comeback year on the surface: $469B deployed globally, the highest level since 2022. Headlines screamed recovery.

Underneath, the market quietly rewired itself.

Capital concentrated harder than ever.

Total deal count fell 17%, but mega rounds exploded. Fewer companies raised. The same companies raised again and again. 65% of all global venture dollars went into just 738 rounds.

Bigger checks. Fewer winners.

And almost all of it flowed to one place.

US startups captured ~70% of global funding. Europe and Asia grew modestly, but neither benefited meaningfully from the AI surge.

AI didn't just win. It absorbed the market.

AI companies raised $226B in 2025. Six rounds alone accounted for $111B.

This is not diversification. This is one macro bet.

If the winner-takes-most assumption holds, returns will be historic.

If it breaks, there are very few sectors left to cushion the fall.

Meanwhile, robotics quietly crossed a threshold.

$40.7B went into physical AI, the highest on record. Humanoids, autonomous systems, drones, foundation models.

Valuations moved faster than fundamentals. Some companies hit massive price tags without revenue or commercial proof.

And the smartest capital leaned into the concentration.

Top performing VC firms clustered almost all activity around AI agents, copilots, and infrastructure. A sharp departure from classic venture theory.

So what does this mean heading into 2026?

Venture did not broadly recover. It refocused.

Capital is available, but only if you fit a very specific narrative.
Scale matters more than ever.
Proof matters later than it probably should.

You're spending time on people who were never going to buy.

The bottleneck isn't effort. It's timing and signal.

Most founders treat every lead the same. But real buyers don't announce themselves. They research quietly, compare options, loop in teammates, and by the time they talk to you, they've already decided.

Here's what I'd do differently today.

Step 1: Stop guessing who's in market

Not "enterprise companies." Be specific.

"Series C+ fintechs with 200+ employees hiring a VP of Engineering."

Last year I was taking 12+ calls a day.
