Early in my career, my honest answer was no.
I believed I had to be the glue, the fixer, the person who held it all together.

If you’re doing everything yourself, your team will always rely on you.
Start handing off responsibilities now—not just for coverage, but for growth.

2️⃣ Build a simple “What If” Playbook

Document your key responsibilities, contacts, and processes.
It doesn’t need to be perfect—it just needs to exist.

3️⃣ Appoint a clear point person

Name the person who steps in when you’re out.
Decision clarity = fewer fires and less confusion.

4️⃣ Create daily ownership

Your team shouldn’t wait on you for every answer.
Encourage problem-solving long before you take a day off.

5️⃣ Trust the team you’ve invested in

This one hit me hard.
If you’ve coached them well, they will step up.
You’re not supposed to be the hero every day—they can carry the mission too.

Taking time off doesn’t mean you’re abandoning the team.
It means you’ve built a team strong enough not to collapse without you.

𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸.
 
When you start a family.
Stepping back is OK.
Having children…
Is a beautiful experience.
 
But
 
It's also like taking on 3 new jobs.
At the same time.
 
That may mean that your primary career can suffer.
And that causes a ton of stress.
When this happens, you have to prioritize.
 
Is career or family more important right now?
 
Odds are.
If you are starting a family.
It's because that's the priority.
Make sure you align appropriately.
 
When I had my first two kids.
I didn't align my priorities the right way.
Instead of pausing and stepping back,
I went full force into my career.

And it cost me.
 
A career can wait. Childhood can’t.
 
Sure, I was doing well at work.
But I was suffering at home.
And did it matter for my career?
 
Not nearly as much as I thought it would.
 
When I was having our third.
I saw it as a do-over.
I stepped back and took a "demotion".
Went into an individual contributor role in a company that supported work-life balance.
 
The result?
 
I was home way more.
I got to watch my kids grow up.
I was remote for COVID.
I made MORE money.
 
More importantly:
 
I was happier.
My marriage thrived.
We avoided many of the pitfalls of our first 2 kids. 
My presence was paramount. 
 
And..
 
My career THRIVED
I got my cake and ate it too. 🎂
 
Because I made the decision to step-back.
 
So my recommendation when starting a family?
It's OK to step back

 Shift priorities and energy.
You can always work back to where you were.
If you got to this point once, you can do it again.
 
Parenting has no do-overs.
 
The most important meeting, is the one around the dinner table.

Last night I was reminded of it...

looking into my daughter's eyes when putting her to bed. 

We were talking and she told me how much she loves when I take her to school. 


She's 5 and went on to continue talking about how she would miss me when she slept.
That feeling of being loved unconditionally through the eyes of a child. 


Then it hit me….

I thought about how many nights my brother couldn't be there for his kids.
When he was deployed in Afghanistan, Africa, Germany, or even training in DC. 
He has been away from his family in long intervals in service of our country. 

He is has aways been amazing father and family man no matter what. 

But the sacrifice was there, for him and his family. 

Not only the distance, it's the uncertainty of whether he would return. 

My brother is still active and has over 25 years of service through multiple branches. 

My kids have grown up with stories of the sacrifice he has made, with mission coins in each of their rooms. 

Unique souvenirs from their uncle. 

No matter how much someone tells you about the life…
I don't think you can truly appreciate it until you see it, or live it. 
I am still an outside spectator, and the gravity hits me. 

When my brother retires, he will have seen the world in a way very few have. 
He will continue to strengthen the bonds with his family and help others through their service. 
And he will continue to be an example to his kids, and mine. 

But there is always a cost. 

Today is a special day to honor all military, living or deceased. 
It's also not uniquely American. 
The UK, Canada, Australia, France, Belgium, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, and South Africa all honor service today. 

Today is a day that many nations feel the pride of their service men and women. 
Along with the heavy sacrifice that service means. 
Even if it's just missed rides to school. 

Today, be clear what it means and why it's important. 
Just as leaders can take charge of the vision of a company.
Veterans take charge of the nation's mission. 

For those that serve today or have in the past. 
We honor you on this Veteran's Day.

About 7 years ago, I was leading a sizeable direct sales team.
Big territory.
Long drives.
7–8 hours a week alone in the car.

At first, that time felt like a complete drag.
Point A before the sun came up ➝ Point B when the sun was going down.

I kept thinking: “There has to be a better use of this time…”

Then one day it hit me.

I still remember what was on - it was a shock-jock morning show. 
Demeaning content in the name of entertainment. 
And one of the most popular shows in FL.

I wasn’t tired because of the drive.
I was tired because of the content.

The radio was filled with negativity, bad skits, doom-cycle news—
pure mental junk food.

And just like bad food wrecks your health…
bad content wrecks your mindset.

I realized something big:

What you feed your mind becomes
→ your self-talk
→ your tone
→ your leadership
→ your impact on others

So I made a shift.

I swapped the noise for Audible.
Leadership books.
Mindset.
Sales excellence.
Uplifting content.

That one decision changed my entire trajectory—
as a leader, a dad, a husband, a human.

And it made me wonder…

How much of our daily stress comes from what we allow into our mind?

If you’re not sure, try this simple exercise.
I call it a Mental Diet Audit 👇🏼

1️⃣ Grab a small notepad.

Draw a line down the middle.

Left side: Negative
Right side: Positive

2️⃣ For an entire week…

Track everything you consume or put out:

• Social media
• TV
• Radio

Being yourself as a leader is terrifying.
And for years, I avoided it.
 
I spent the first part of my leadership career trying to be “the polished corporate version” of myself.
 
👉🏼 No jokes
👉🏼 No personality
👉🏼 No humor
👉🏼 Just what I thought “they” wanted
 
And the questions ate me alive:
 
❓What will my team think?
❓What will my boss think?
❓What will this do to my brand?
❓What if being myself costs me my career?
 
Leadership became a grind.
Unfulfilling.
Draining.
A daily identity war.
 
And here’s the plot twist:
I still got moved out of a role and handed a severance package.
 
All that masking didn’t save me.
 
So I stopped.
 
Now:
 
✅ I joke daily with my team
✅ I bring my sarcasm to work
✅ I get vulnerable in the right moments
✅ I follow my gut with people
✅ I share personal stories
✅ I guide the whole human, not just the employee
 
Leadership is lighter.
And a hell of a lot more meaningful.
 
Professional boundaries matter —
but they don’t need to be walls.
 
Find the balance, and you’ll unlock a team that moves mountains.
 
The real risk isn’t being yourself.
It’s leading while pretending to be someone else.

You only get 940 weekends with your kids before they’re grown.

Read that again.

Nine hundred and forty.
That’s it.
After that, they’re packing bags, chasing dreams, and building lives of their own.

And here’s the truth most people don’t want to admit:
Work will take every ounce of time you’re willing to hand over.
There will always be one more task.
One more email.
One more crisis.
One more “I’ll be home a little late.”

But our kids?
They don’t wait.
They grow—every second—whether we’re watching or not.

Early in my career, I let work follow me home.
Stress. Burnout. Mental exhaustion.
And the people who paid the price weren’t my coworkers…
…it was my family.

That’s exactly why I write the way I write.
For the managers drowning in responsibilities.
For the leaders who feel guilty closing the laptop.
For the people who care—but are stuck working in the business instead of on it.

Because when leadership isn’t done right, it spills everywhere.
Into your home.
Into your patience.
Into the time your kids will remember for the rest of their lives.

Here’s the mindset shift that changed everything for me:

1️⃣ Work is infinite.
If you give it 100 hours, it will gladly take 101.
It never ends.

2️⃣ Family time is finite.
940 weekends.
Maybe fewer.
That’s the real urgency.

3️⃣ Great leadership protects—not steals—your life outside of work.
When you build systems… delegate well… coach instead of carry…
you create margin.
You create peace.
You create a version of yourself your family deserves.

This is why I help struggling managers become balanced, confident leaders:
Because when you get leadership right, you get your life back.
And when you get your life back, your family gets you back.

Your team needs a leader.
Your family needs you.
Make sure you know which one is irreplaceable.

“I’m sorry to bother you.”
 
Because those five words say more than you think.
 
When someone apologizes before asking for help, it usually means one thing:
 
👉 They don’t feel safe taking you up on your offer.
 
And every time I hear it, my internal dialogue kicks in:
 
Did I not sound genuine when I offered support?
Do I seem unapproachable?
What am I doing that makes them hesitate?
What impact is this having on their growth—or their career?
 
Here’s the truth:
If I offer to help you… I mean it.
And your leaders mean it too.
 
Yet so many people never reach out.
Not because they don’t want the help—
but because they feel like an imposition.
 
Let me reframe it:
 
𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀—
they WANT you to use it.
 
Here’s how to shift your mindset the next time someone says “reach out anytime”:
 
1️⃣ Assume the invitation was genuine.
Leaders don’t offer their time by accident. If they gave you access, they see something in you.
 
2️⃣ Understand the relationship is the value.
Coaching, feedback, direction—none of it works if you never open the door.
 
3️⃣ Your question isn’t a burden—it’s momentum.
Most leaders love helping people who want to grow. You’re not “bothering” them… you’re doing the work.
 
 Reflection Exercise:
Think of the last leader, mentor, or resource who offered you an open invitation.
 
Did you take them up on it?
If not—why?
 
Here’s the kicker:
I’ve been guilty of this too.
But the feeling I get when someone asks for help?
That’s the reminder I need to reach out to others who’ve said the same to me—and pay that feeling forward.
 
Something you can do today:
 
Put an optional "Office hours" on the calendar for your team to come with questions/concerns.

Make it light and unstructured.

See what happens.

Today I am greatful for so many things. 

The life my wife and I have been able to build.

The friends and colleagues that have supported us through it all.

The sounds of my kids playing outside as I write this.

It’s hard to count our blessings in a single moment, but now I am filled with gratitude.
Not just because of the holiday, but because I know what it takes to get here.

Also for being able to practice what I preach, take some time to recharge, focus on my family bonds, and making memories.

That being active here meant I wasn’t working.
He also didn’t understand why I write.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀:

I absolutely have a full-time job — one I love.
I help business owners secure the funding they need to buy companies, expand, invest in equipment, or restructure debt.

And I show up for my team and my clients every single day.
I’m a peer leader.
A mentor.
A steady hand.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟭𝟳+ 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀.

Leading nationally ranked teams.
Developing people.
Building systems.
Learning the hard way — so others don’t have to.

But work isn’t my only purpose.
𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘀.

One of the greatest purposes I’ve found is helping new leaders avoid the doubt, stress, and early mistakes I wish someone had prepared me for.

A few years ago, I took a chance and asked to be a voice here.
Most employees never think to do that.
I built a case, a model, and a vision — and not only was I approved, I was supported.

So I write.

Early in the morning.
Before the emails.
Before the meetings.
While others debate fantasy sports or memorize football stats, I choose to build something that makes leaders stronger. 
So they can enjoy all of those hobbies - guilt free. 

Not because I “have time,”
but because I make time for what matters.

𝗜’𝗺 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

Maybe it’s a leadership tip.
Maybe it’s perspective.
Maybe it’s a moment of honesty you didn’t know you needed.

Whatever the format, my goal is simple:
𝗔𝗱𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆.

I’m still “building in the shadows,” turning real experience into practical tools and content that new leaders can use immediately.

Because leadership is stressful.

I’ve had employees break down in December more than any other month.

And every year, the same reminder hits me like a brick:

You never actually know what someone is carrying.

The holidays look like joy for some —
but for others, they magnify stress, debt, family tension, and pressure to “hold it all together.”

That’s why I’ve stopped saying things like:
“If you don’t want to be in this situation next year, do XYZ.”

People don’t need discipline when they’re drowning.
They need grace.

This time of year, the most powerful leadership skill isn’t performance management —
it’s compassion.

A check-in.
A quiet word.
A hand up instead of a spotlight on their mistakes.

It won’t fix everything.
But it might be the thing that keeps someone going.

Lead gently. Someone on your team needs it more than you realize.

Leaders — this one is uncomfortable, but it’s real.
 
In 2017, Hurricane Irma was forecasted as a CAT-5 heading directly toward my home.
We grabbed our toddlers, our pets, and whatever we could fit in the car, and drove to Asheville to get out of harm’s way.
 
The storm hit.
Everyone at the house was calm. Peaceful. Relaxed.
 
Except me.
 
Because instead of being present with my family, I was:
 
• Trying to connect to mobile hotspots
• Checking ad schedules
• Calling personnel 3–4 times per day
• Stressing about being “gone too long”
 
It was hell in paradise.
 
But the worst decision came next.
 
With roads jammed, gas disappearing, and power outages everywhere…
I let my insecurity push me into loading up my family and driving back home.
 
And then the highway closed.
I-75. Completely shut down.
 
No gas.
No street lights.
Barely charted backroads.
 
I put my family in danger — for a job I thought couldn’t survive one more day without me.
 
I drove 23 straight hours, no breaks, fighting to stay awake, terrified I'd fall asleep at the wheel.
 
And when I finally made it back?
 
Half the office wasn’t even there.
Nobody lost clients.
Nobody lost their job.
Nothing collapsed because I wasn’t present.
 
Except me.
 
That drive broke something in me — in the best way.
 
Because I finally understood:
 
We work so we can live and enjoy our families.
Not so we can avoid them.
Not so we can sacrifice ourselves for a business that will run tomorrow whether we’re awake or not.
 
Here’s what I wish I learned sooner:
 
1️⃣ Your job won’t remember your sacrifice.
Your kids will. In both directions.
 
2️⃣ The business will survive without you.
If it can’t, that’s a leadership problem — not a loyalty one.
 
3️⃣ Presence is not passive.
It’s a discipline leaders must protect, not apologize for.
 
4️⃣ Fear-based urgency destroys judgment.
Clarity comes from rest, not panic.
 
5️⃣ Your worth isn’t tied to constant availability.
Your value comes from your leadership — not your exhaustion.
 
I’m grateful my story didn’t end differently.
But it easily could have.
 
And that’s why I write these posts:
To help you reframe leadership before you drift off the road — literally or otherwise.
 
Lead your life first.
Lead your team second.
Everything else comes after.

𝗜 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸.
(Seriously.)

Writing was one of my earliest passions.

As far back as I can remember, I’d sit at my parents’ table or in my dad’s office, pounding away on old typewriters collecting dust.

Click. Clack.
For hours.

(Probably where my love for loud keyboards came from. Yes—everyone knows it’s me off mute on video calls.)

As I got older, the writing continued.
In 11th grade, we had a 2-page essay assignment.
I turned in a 30-page short story.

It was a dream of mine…
A stalled one.

𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 college.

I had an English professor, Gary L. Lemon.
He assigned us massive reading blocks and required written responses—3 to 7 pages, sometimes twice a week.

At first it felt brutal.
But over time, it became something I looked forward to.

At the end of the semester, he said something that stayed with me:

“A novel averages about 250,000 words.
You’ve all probably written close to that this semester.”

What once felt impossible suddenly felt reachable.

I could do it.

Fast-forward to my Abnormal Psychology class… I was disengaged. So I started writing again—and didn’t stop for months.

Then, suddenly, I did.
Hard stop.

I didn’t pick it back up until I got sick years later.
It turned into a bucket-list goal.

During treatment, I wrote.
And eventually—the first draft was finished.

Here’s what most people don’t tell you: finishing the draft isn’t the hard part.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿.

I hired an editor.
Then another.
We revised, refined, rebuilt.

And eventually—I self-published.

It’s not a best seller.
But it’s one of the accomplishments I’m most proud of.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗺 𝗜 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀?

Not to sell copies.

But to remind you that your big goals are possible.

One word.
One page.
One action at a time.

Maybe this becomes your spark—just like Professor Lemon’s words were for me.

“Little by little becomes a lot.” — Tanzanian Proverb

Tackle your dreams. They’re yours to make real.

No one tells new leaders this.

But they should.

Imagine this:

You apply for a role.
Or maybe someone taps you on the shoulder.

It’s your first step from individual contributor to leader.

You think you know what to expect.
After all, you’ve been performing at a high level.
But you’ve never actually led people.

You’re told you’ll get mentors, support, training.

And you do —
But it’s not leadership training.

It’s systems.
Processes.
Compliance.
New faces.
New acronyms.
New dashboards.

Information overload.

All before you ever get to know your team the way a leader should.

Why?

Because you were a producer.
And now your performance is tied to metrics you don’t directly control.
Especially in sales.

Month after month.
Quarter after quarter.
Pressure tightening.

So you go into react mode.

Staring at metrics.
Trying to figure out how to coach without pissing people off.
Trying to make them perform — because you performed.
Why wouldn’t they?

You start stepping in.
“Let me do it — I know how.”
And just like that, you become the crutch.
Not the coach.

Dependence grows.
Respect slips.
Responsiveness fades.

Because you haven’t earned it yet.

And to compensate for weak systems and processes?
You take on the work yourself.

Suddenly your 40-hour contributor life turns into a 60-hour leadership life.

Except the paycheck didn’t grow by 50%.
But the time away from your family did.

You lose traction.
Maybe your key performer leaves — the one doing 50–80% of the team’s volume.

Now you’re carrying the remaining team.
Trying to motivate them.
Trying to coach them.
Trying to pretend you’re not underwater.

Then you start missing targets.
And the buck stops with you.

Performance management begins.
Stress becomes unmanageable.
You wonder why you ever stepped into leadership.

No lifeline.
No guidance.
Your “mentors” are just as buried as you.

Conflicting priorities.
Personnel issues.
Lack of trust.
Avoidance of reality.

You open job boards.
You look at roles outside the company.
Outside leadership.
Anything that doesn’t include “manager,” “supervisor,” or “leader.”

You’re done with the game.

Or…

You find a guide outside the company.
A real resource.
A plan.
And you focus on the one thing that actually matters:

Supporting your people.

Because when you do that?
You can succeed.
You can thrive in leadership.
You can rebuild confidence, momentum, and trust.

Focus on the right inputs.
And the right actions.

Here’s the truth:
How you lead during the holidays becomes part of your culture for the next 12 months.

So how do you keep the business moving without burning people out or stealing the season away from them?
Here’s the playbook I used for years running high-performing sales teams:
 
1️⃣ 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝘁
Don’t wait until the calendar is a mess.
Sit with your team early and build a shared schedule where everyone gets the time they need.
This prevents resentment and creates clarity.
 
2️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲
Not all tasks matter equally.
Cut the fluff.
Clarify exactly what must get done to win Q4—and what can wait.
Your team shouldn’t burn PTO time catching up on low-value work.
 
3️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝘆
The holidays amplify miscommunication.
Set clear rules:
• Response expectations
• How to escalate issues
• What “good enough” looks like in December
Clarity ➝ Calm.
Calm ➝ Consistency.
 
4️⃣ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲
Here’s a leadership reality:
Somebody’s kid will get sick.
Somebody’s travel will get delayed.
Somebody will have a family emergency.
Build margin so your plan doesn’t fall apart the first time real life shows up.
 
5️⃣ 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲
If you preach balance but work every holiday hour…
Your team will copy your behavior, not your words.
Take your PTO.
Shut it down.
Go home early sometimes.
Show them the standard.
 
6️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲
End the year strong—but not at the expense of the people carrying the business into next year.
Q4 results matter.
Your people matter more.
 
𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀.
𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆, 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆-𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺.
