OnBoard Programme

I was selected for one of 12 places to participate in the third cohort of the Onboard Programme.

OnBoard is a not-for-profit organisation set up to broaden the diversity of backgrounds and experience on all types of boards by skilling up and enabling talented individuals who are currently less likely to take on board roles. OnBoard works with individuals in the first ten years of their professional careers.

The programme includes
- Workshops on essential board topics, including the role of the board, legal and regulatory obligations, finance and strategy for board members
- Workshops on the board journey, including identifying individual strengths to bring to a board and the recruitment and application process
- Mentoring from an experienced recruiter
- Mentoring from an established board member

During my time as a speaker, I have had the privilege of talking at organizations such as the Home Office, Bank of England, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, as well as universities, colleges, schools, and numerous conferences and events.

My main area of focus is delivering drug prevention talks to young learners in educational settings. I will be spending the 2024/25 academic year touring the width and breadth of the UK sharing my story and inspiring our youth to be unique, and not follow the crowd down destructive and often life threatening paths.

Did you know that about 20% of young people with mental ill health wait more than six months to receive care from a specialist.

This is why we plan, manage and facilitate charity events that educate people on different ways to improve their mental well-being using holistic methods focusing on lifestyle and wellness as a whole rather than focusing specifically on mental illness.

Through each event we aim to educate, inspire and empower delegates, putting them in a position of strength to take control of their mental health  and move from apathy to possibility.

Hi, my name's James!

Aside from my social entrepreneurial work, I speak at organisations across the country to inspire hope, effect change, motivate, educate and empower people from all walks of life. I love doing this and it has been incredible hearing the stories of people who have gone on to make serious lifestyle changes or started seeing things in a more nuanced way, as a result of hearing me speak. I feel extremely blessed now to be able to use my past pain for purpose and influence so many lives for good. It is definitely a privilege that I don't take lightly.

Every time I've spoken at events I have had people come up to me at the end to tell me about their own life experiences. Sometimes for the first time. To think that I might have empowered someone to make the brave first step in opening up makes me feel very proud. We all experience adversity to varying degrees at some point in our lives, it is important to me that people understand that they are not alone in their struggles, and also that they are equipped with strategies and healthy coping mechanisms to help them overcome.

During 2024/25 I am mainly focusing on delivering drug prevention talks at schools/colleges across the UK in order to share about the stark reality of uncontrollable drug addiction, the times I narrowly avoided death and the depths of where that, 'I'll just try it once' mentality took me.

During my time as a speaker, I have had the privilege of talking at organizations such as the Home Office, Bank of England, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, as well as universities, schools, and multiple government conferences and events.
