OnBoard Programme

I was selected for one of 12 places to participate in the third cohort of the Onboard Programme.

OnBoard is a not-for-profit organisation set up to broaden the diversity of backgrounds and experience on all types of boards by skilling up and enabling talented individuals who are currently less likely to take on board roles. OnBoard works with individuals in the first ten years of their professional careers.

The programme includes
- Workshops on essential board topics, including the role of the board, legal and regulatory obligations, finance and strategy for board members
- Workshops on the board journey, including identifying individual strengths to bring to a board and the recruitment and application process
- Mentoring from an experienced recruiter

We're on a mission to transform women's early-to-mid-career experience and close the early career gender gap. We apply tools used to crack the glass ceiling to the ‘sticky floor’ of early career with a double bottom-line business model that aims to do well by doing good. We support women in defining, sustainably building & achieving the life & career they want. Took a career break to spend time with my family and recover after a significant death in the family.  During this time, I considered what I had learned and enjoyed most over the years, and reflected on my next adventures in life & career. I studied & practiced mindfulness and pursued a lifelong passion for cooking & wine by studying and earning a diploma in Wine, Gastronomy & Management from Le Cordon Bleu in London.

As Pearson’s global expert on thought leadership, I developed and led the future of work and learning agenda at Pearson globally. In this role, my team and I brought trends in the future of work and learning into focus companywide by releasing a multiyear thought leadership project, Future of Skills: Employment in 2030. Collaborating with leadership, I integrated future of work insights into the strategy for the UK & Core Markets (Europe, APAC, North Africa), laying the groundwork for its use companywide. In collaboration with the strategy team, we developed the first companywide strategy that aligned Pearson’s twelve businesses around common themes of lifelong learning, employability, and connecting the work and education ecosystems for learners

My team and I pioneered new perspectives about work- and post-secondary-based learning in the context of the future of work, new consumer behaviors, and the role learning technologies can play in improving learning & employability outcomes. 

Our thought leadership products energized and influenced consumer product innovation, brand, marketing, and business development and ultimately informed a new company strategy that better connected PreK-Gray learning products and services to the world of work.

During this time, I relocated from the US to the UK where I simultaneously successfully led corporate and government affairs strategy and teams in other full-time global roles across the business during challenging periods of business transformation (see below).

VP, Global Thought Leadership (CxO Suite)

As VP, Global Corporate Affairs & Thought Leadership, executives relied on my ability to swiftly assimilate into new environments, build relationships & teams, bridge gaps, and unite unconventional thinkers to address complex issues in creative ways. Leaders valued my versatility, vision, and ability to use insights and narrative to build cohesion, solidarity & enhanced reputation during periods of profound transformation.  I understand the delicate art of nurturing relationships while confronting dilemmas and making tough decisions.

Built & led an international Corporate Affairs team across Pearson's businesses in the UK and across Pearson's most mature (Core) international markets (Europe, APAC, North Africa) which became Pearson's fastest growing business. This is a geographic division with a $1bn annual turnover and a complex portfolio of PreK-Gray learning products including publishing, assessment, online programme management (OPM), and qualifications.  Responsibilities included: global brand/reputation management, strategic advising to the Executive team and Board, internal communications, public affairs and UK Government Relations. Led teams across 4 countries, and collaborated globally across all international markets.

I relocated from the US to the UK to take on this role, diving into the new markets quickly, forming new relationships within the company as well as externally with key stakeholders, including those in key positions in the UK government, universities across the globe, think-tanks, nonprofit organisations and more.

VP Corporate & Government Affairs, UK, Europe, APAC & N. Africa 

Created & led a global Corporate Affairs team across two countries to support Pearson's global product function, which powered multiple product lines, the largest being North America Higher Education, and intersected with entities across the company matrix, including Pearson's R&D hub. Areas of responsibility included reputation management, change management, employee engagement, company culture, and strategic communications. I also partnered extensively with human resources to support the developmet of a skills taxonomy and build out internal learning and development opportunities. This highly cross-functional role required collaboration and intensive stakeholder engagement across the business during a time of focused restructuring, business, and technological simplification.

VP Corporate Affairs, Global Product

Led Corporate Affairs for Pearson's R&D hub, focused on communicating the technological capabilities that powered digital learning products and product efficacy to internal and external audiences globally. Partnered with thought leadership team to strengthen alignment with internal and sector priorities, as well as dissemination. My background in K-12, US charter schools and US higher education policy, practice and trends was leveraged consistently across the company, where I was tapped to advise senior leadership and the executive team, partner with government relations, and lead strategic communications.

VP Efficacy & Research, Global Corporate Affairs & Marketing

Massachusetts Charter Public School Association

Originally hired as Deputy Director for Innovation and promoted to the first role of Chief of Policy and Practice. I built the Association's learning and development capacity from the ground up. Partnering across all 72 member schools, which served 40,000 students, I worked collaboratively to lead the initial needs assessment, propose a structure, and ultimately build a leadership learning function which not only aligned with the practice needs of school leaders and their staff but also the policy environment which significantly affected their practice. The goal of this work was to enhance the school's capacity to support leaders and teachers, as well as students, especially English language learners and students with special needs. 

Through this work I cultivated powerful leadership learning networks across 72 schools which enhanced sector performance & capacity. Created & delivered 50+ programs annually leading a team of instructional designers. 98% participation. 95% of CEOs ranked networks “very effective” (top ranking) annually 2012-16.

I was a vocal and staunch advocate for expanding the quality, impact, and availability of charter schools across the state. My work and partnership with leaders fostered a culture of collaboration across schools and fueled sector-wide innovation, helping to attract $4.7M in new funding. 

I also initiated, raised funds, and drove the collaborative development of the first statewide effort for charter schools to collaborate to enhance their capacity to deliver services to students with special needs and English language learners and improve their educational outcomes as such. 

Awards & Recognition: The US Dept of Education recognized the statewide charter school capacity-building program I designed to support the needs of students with special needs and English language learners as a national model. And I was awarded a Massachusetts Congressional Award for Service in Education.

Chief of Policy & Practice

Harvard Graduate School of Education

As founding administrative director of the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard (CEPR), I I stewarded the launch & initial growth of a new university-wide education policy research center through intense university-wide collaboration. I led all enabling functions (operations, communications, finance & grants administration, and HR) and supported increase in annual revenues from $1.5M - $6M and staff growth from 5 – 40.  

Critically, I helped to shape the ideas & proposals which attracted $25.5M in new funding for the start-up & scale-up of national programs transforming teaching & learning. Funds represented 50% of total external grants raised by HGSE in FY09. Created steady influx of new funds by showcasing CEPR to alumni, donors, philanthropy & media.

In my capacity as Director, I co-founded the Strategic Data Project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, launching & serving as Acting Director of the now-renowned national Fellowship program that finds & trains data strategists to advance critical analytic initiatives & insights which strengthen the data-driven decision-making capacity of state education agencies. 

In that capacity, I designed and led the fellowship program, including marketing & business development; recruitment, selection & placement; partnership & outreach; program evaluation; and alumni network. Importantly, I partnered across the university and with external consultants to create the Fellowship's learning and development program which focused on leadership, change management, and the use of data in policy decisionmaking.

Director of Administration & Communications, Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard

Supported institutional change efforts of the Dean by identifying high-potential cross-institutional projects and developing an external relations strategy that showcased the innovation and impact of HGSE faculty, students, and alumni globally. Efforts enhanced the visibility and perception of HGSE, underpinned greater donor engagement, and supported an increase in funds raised.

Associate in Research, Innovation & Outreach / Special Assistant to the Dean (External Relations)

Harvard Medical School

Directed all aspects of the $1.3M Center funded by the Institute of Medicine, including education program development, budget, evaluation & recruitment. Worked under pioneer Dr. Joan Reede, Dean for Diversity & Community Partnerships, gaining front-line exposure to the barriers facing underrepresented students and faculty as they pursued careers in science, public health, and medicine. Cultivated & expanded cross-institutional partnerships and created new pipeline programming supporting underrepresented medical students and faculty across 10 Harvard hospitals, Boston Public Schools, and a wide range of university partners.  Attracted $2M in new grants and outside funding to support program expansion.

Asst. Director, Center for Minority Health & Health Disparities, Diversity & Community Partnerships

Served as special advisor to Dean Robert Clark, helping to drive a 2-year, institution-wide strategic planning process. Facilitated internal coalition building and cross-institutional collaboration among faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Served as Dean’s Designee & administrator of six institutional planning committees, including the Curriculum Committee, Student Services Committee, Facilities Committee, International Committee, Faculty Affairs, and the core Steering Committee.
