Senior Technical SEO Manager

SEO that actually works isn’t sexy.

I keep seeing people sell:

 “Look at my n8 automation hack”.
 “Look at this AI trick”.
 “I tried this once and traffic spiked”.

Some of it works temporarily.

Most of it falls apart later.

SEO that works short-term and long-term looks boring:

→ Actually doing the fundamentals (80/20 SEO) 
→ Good optimized content 
→ Strong internal linking 
→ One page, one topic 
→ Strong backlinks 
→ Good tech SEO 
→ Good UX

But those things don’t go viral and don't feel exciting 

So people chase shiny objects and hope AI fixes everything.

You don’t need more hacks.

You don’t need more tools.

You need SEO that actually works and keeps working.

Folder Depth ≠ Crawl Depth:

I continue to see some SEOs think that because a URL is four folders deep for example that they assume this is always the crawl depth.

That is 100% wrong.

Folder depth refers to the number of subfolders (or subdirectories) in a URL's path, indicating the hierarchical structure of a website.

On the other hand, Crawl depth refers to the number of clicks that a search engine must travel from the start page (homepage)

So, it is technically possible for you to have the same crawl depth/ folder depth. But, do not assume just because something is four folders deep it also has the same crawl depth.

When I started SEO in 2011, there was fewer sources to learn SEO:

Today, the problem is filtering the noise.

→ Thousands of SEO blogs
 → AI pumping out endless SEO slop
 → Everyone claiming they’re an “expert”
 → YouTube videos, threads, courses
 → SEO advice all over social media

And honestly?

It’s overwhelming and I’ve been doing this for almost 16 years.

I can’t imagine what it feels like for someone just getting started.

Here’s what I’d do if I were learning SEO today and wanted to avoid information overload:

1. Pick a few trusted blogs sources:

You don’t need read every SEO blog. 

Most people are just repeating the same ideas anyway.

I read both every morning.

2. Get a basic understanding of SEO:

You can learn a great deal of about SEO in a month, but you won’t become a master in that time. 

I still don’t call myself a a master at it. 

Focus on learning the fundamentals and building your foundation from there. 

3. Build something:
 
A small site and even some random web 2.0 will teach you more than 100 blog posts ever will.
 
4. Ignore shiny objects and “hacks.”

If it sounds too easy or too fast, it probably doesn’t work long-term. 

Make sure you look for things like conversions and real ROI. 

Anyone can create traffic and rank at this point.

5. Measure learning by results, not knowledge.
 
If you can’t explain why something worked (or didn’t), you’re just consuming content.

SEO didn’t get harder because there’s more information.

It got harder because it’s easier to get distracted.

Less consuming.

More doing.

If you’re newer to SEO, what part feels the most overwhelming right now?

Possibly the worst take on LinkedIn of all time:

"LinkedIn does nothing for your business; you are totally fine without it" .

As someone that made $80k from LinkedIn last year working part-time between sponsored posts, freelance and whitelabeling for other SEOs, I can say this is the worst advice i've ever heard.

There's  many ways to leverage LinkedIn.

If you're just posting and not dming or expect clients to come to you, I could see that.

But, if you're being intentional and doing the right things, you will see success on this platform. 

Every platform works, you just need to know how to do it correctly.
