There’s a window nobody talks about.

It’s after your parents get old enough to scare you. And before they’re bedridden and you become their full-time carer.

This is that window, for us.

Dad is 83. Mom is 72. In-laws similarly aged. All four, by divine grace, still independently living.

 Still able-bodied for their age. Nobody needs to be fed or bathed or lifted.

Not yet.

We moved back to India years ago.

I won’t pretend it’s easy. There’s career costs. Social costs. 

The daily friction of being around people who don’t think like you, won’t change for you, and have no intention of becoming the parents you wished they’d been.

We see their childhood wounds. And ours.

Some of the unpalatable stuff softened with age. The others? Nope.

Stephen Jenkinson says something that rewired how we see this:

You don’t have to be perfect to be an elder. In fact, it’s the opposite.

He calls elderhood “the institutionalization of the failure to succeed.” 

What you submit to in an elder isn’t their wisdom or their perfection. 

It’s their frailty. 

Their having been undone, over and over, until they can’t pretend anymore.


So we’re not waiting for them to become who we wished they’d been. 

We’re here with who they are.

When you move countries by yourself, your parents exist in a time warp. 

Frozen at whatever age they were when you left. 

And you live in a peer bubble. People your age, your stage, your ambitions.

You’re not around aging. 

When we moved back, we stepped into the stream.

Death is just around. Not dramatic. Not a crisis. Just present. Not just our parents. 

Friends’ parents. Uncles. Aunts. Neighbors.


Limits. Endings. Frailty. 

The human body doing what it does.

An antidote to something we didn’t even know was running in the background. 

The delusion that we’re the center of anything. 

That our careers and goals and busy important lives are the main event.

We didn’t have this antidote while we were miles away. 

We needed it more than we knew.

You're cooking dinner.Your kid walks in: "Mom, who are you talking to?"
You weren't talking. 
You were rehearsing.

 The argument you had three days ago. 
The one you might have tomorrow. 
The conversation where you finally say the thing.

You've been mouthing words for ten whole minutes. 
You didn't notice.

Or you're driving. And suddenly you're five exits past where you meant to turn. Because you were somewhere else. 
Replaying. Preparing. Bracing.

The threat passed. 
Maybe years ago.

But your body is still in the meeting. 
Still in the labor room. 
Still in the conversation. 
Still in the house you grew up in.

One woman came to me because she wanted another child. 
But her body wouldn't let her.

The first birth had been traumatic. 
Nothing went to plan. 
She survived it. 
Her baby was healthy. 
Everyone said she should be grateful.

But her nervous system filed it as: never again.

She said: "I'm okay if this is our family size for the right reasons. But it's not. We want to expand. And my fear is stopping me."

She couldn't drive on freeways. 
Couldn't fly without panic. 
Couldn't imagine going through birth again.

Eight weeks later, she was driving. Flying. 
And pregnant with her second.

Not because she "got over it."

Because her body finally got to complete what it couldn't finish the first time.

The loop isn't PPD.

It's birth trauma. 
Motor responses your body couldn't complete.

One is emotional. 
The other is physiological.

 In the body. Time doesn't fix it.

Your body isn't broken. It's stuck.

And stuck can shift.

Grief now speaks fluent productivity. 

Foundations launched. Nonprofits founded. 

Impact measured in pounds packed, children served, volunteers mobilized. 

We’ve lost the containers that let grief be useless. 

The wailing. The sitting. 

The year of being no good to anyone.

 So sorrow learns the only language we have left: metrics, milestones, and ‘carrying forward.’ 

I don’t think this is wrong. 

I think it’s what happens when grief has nowhere to go except into output. 

When the only way to be witnessed is to be legible. 

Scalable. Postable. 

This isn’t a criticism of anyone building something beautiful from loss. 

It’s a lament that we’ve made a world where grief has to earn its keep.
