I had the absolute delight to meet one of my online heroes yesterday at the fabulous* SocialDay ® B2B conference. 

One thing which was no surprise at all was his personality 💜

She said she wore the same shirt to every event to look like her LinkedIn photo. But that was a lie...




Years ago, at a few community events, I kept meeting a woman who'd migrated to NZ.


She was trying to rebuild her professional life, attending every networking event and interview she could.


She wore the same shirt each time.


"I want to look exactly like my LinkedIn photo," she said to me. "So people recognise me."


Later, over coffee, she told me the truth.


It wasn't a branding strategy, though it could be. 


It was the only decent shirt she owned.


She had left everything behind when a women's refuge helped her escape from a violent partner.


She left with nothing but hope and the will to start again.


That one shirt became her armour, her interview outfit, her networking attire.


I think about her often. 


About the thousands of small battles we never see.
About all her professional experience that couldn't protect her from violence.
About the extraordinary courage it takes to show up when you're fighting to survive.


Finding decent clothes to attend an interview.
Learning a new job market while processing trauma.
Smiling through interviews while grieving everything lost.


November 25 to December 10 marks the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.


I'm thinking about all the women carrying invisible burdens while building visible lives, affected by violence where they were meant to feel the safest. 


Their own homes. By their intimate partners.


And,
who had to start over.
who are still trapped.
who didn't make it out.


Venkat Raman requested me to write a series of articles sharing these stories.
