hot take: cold calling is not a skill you should be doubling down on in 2026.

before you come at me —

yes, i know it still works for some industries.

but here's what i see every day:

→ answer rates have dropped below 5% in most markets
→ decision makers screen unknown numbers
→ the average cold call lasts under 60 seconds
→ SDRs burn out faster than ever

meanwhile on LinkedIn:

→ your message stays in their inbox
→ they reply when it's convenient for them
→ you can personalize with images, videos, voice notes
→ the conversation feels human, not transactional

cold calling is hard mode.

LinkedIn outreach in 2026 is the smart path.

i sent 20 cold emails last week.

got 1 reply.

then i sent 10 LinkedIn video messages.

got 6 replies.

same offer. same ICP. completely different results.

here's what i do for LinkedIn video messages that actually work:

• keep it under 60 seconds
• reference something specific about their profile or company
• don't pitch. just open a conversation.
• smile. seriously.

cold email isn't dead because people hate email.

it's dead because 99% of it feels like a robot wrote it.

LinkedIn video messages still feel personal.

use that window before everyone else does.

most SDRs celebrate when a lead replies.

i celebrate when a lead is actually qualified.

big difference.

i get inbound leads every single day.

and every one needs to pass a filter before i move them forward.

my quick check:

→ do they actually have the problem we solve?
→ are they the decision maker?
→ is the timing right?
→ do they have the budget to act now?

if i can't say yes to at least 3 of those — i don't move them.

sending unqualified leads to sales is worse than sending no leads at all.

you waste everyone's time.

and your pipeline looks full but converts nothing.

qualify harder. pipeline less. close more.

everyone wants “more leads”

almost no one asks:

“are these even the right people?”

i’ve seen teams send 10,000 messages
and celebrate a 2% reply rate.

that’s 200 replies.

sounds impressive.

until you realize

most of them were never real buyers.

outbound doesn’t fail because people hate cold messages.

it fails because most teams refuse to be specific.

specific industry
specific stage
specific trigger
specific pain

vague targeting creates vague conversations.

and vague conversations don’t turn into revenue.

if your pipeline feels random,
look at your ICP.

that’s usually where the leak is.

nobody's talking about LinkedIn voice notes.

i started using them a few months ago.

reply rate went from 8% to 31%.

a good day at work looks like this:

8:30am → reviewed 14 new inbound leads
9:00am → qualified 8 as worth pursuing
9:30am → sent LinkedIn video messages to the top 3
10:00am → sent voice notes to 4 others
11:00am → 2 replies already
12:00pm → lunch. actually stepped away from my desk.
1:00pm → call booked for tomorrow
2:30pm → followed up on leads from earlier in the week
4:00pm → another call booked
5:00pm → updated CRM. reviewed what worked.

the days that feel the most productive aren't the ones with the most activity.

they're the ones where you did the right things, in the right order, for the right people.

a prospect replied to my LinkedIn message in 8 minutes

the message wasn’t long

it just had a personalized AI video

the video had my face and my voice, but the message inside it was generated specifically for them

their name.
their company.
their context.

so the moment they opened it, they knew:

TL;DR: We were getting 100+ inbound leads every month, but our close rate was hovering between 12-20%, we couldn't figure out why.

inbound leads are not always good leads.

took me longer than i'd like to admit to accept this.

when a lead comes in, it's easy to get excited.

"they raised their hand. they're interested."

but interested is not the same as qualified.

i've wasted more time chasing unqualified inbound leads than cold outbound ones.

because inbound leads feel warm — so you lower your guard.

you skip the qualification questions.
you push to the next step too fast.
you waste a demo slot on someone who was just curious.

now i treat every lead the same way. inbound or outbound.

same filter.
same questions.
no shortcuts.

because a pipeline full of the wrong people is worse than an empty one.

at least with an empty pipeline, you know what needs to be done.

my morning before the first outreach goes out:

6am → gym
7:30am → shower, breakfast
8am → review lead list for the day
8:30am → 5 minutes of research on each top lead
9am → first message goes out

most people skip the research step.

they go straight to calling or messaging.

and then wonder why nobody responds.

5 minutes on a lead's LinkedIn profile before you reach out changes everything.

you stop sounding like a script and start sounding like someone who actually paid attention.

4 years in this role taught me one thing above everything else:

people respond to people who understand them.

not people who can recite a pitch.
