Getting go-to-market wrong in AI fintech is a timing and insight problem.

Last week, during a fireside chat at the AI Lab Supercharged Academy, supported by the Financial Conduct Authority and delivered with CFTE - Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship, we spent time on one core theme:
how founders stay ahead of the market and regulation, rather than reacting to it.

My perspective was simple:

Great GTM in regulated markets starts with knowing your customer deeply—whether that’s the end user or a financial institution—and understanding what regulation will force them to do next.

That’s where opportunity lives.

Consumer Duty created a void: millions of people are economically unviable for traditional advice, and institutions are under pressure to serve them better. That gap wasn’t obvious from market data alone; you had to read the regulatory direction and the human behaviour behind it.

AI becomes powerful when it’s designed into that space:
• Anticipating regulatory direction, not waiting for rulebooks
• Solving real customer anxiety, not just operational cost
• Creating propositions that institutions need, not just want

The strongest AI fintechs won’t chase demand. They’ll create it by sitting one step ahead of customers, markets, and regulators.

That’s the GTM mindset that scales in financial services.

The great discussion on financial health really resonated with what we’re building at Aventur,  removing complexity, listening more closely, and creating support that works for real people, not abstract models. Yesterday in London we brought together a group of innovators and industry leaders to explore how reframing ideas of financial health can shape a better future for all.

And a special thank you to Alastair Campbell who shared ideas from his new book, “Healthy Money”, which calls for those in financial services to embrace a more holistic vision of financial wellbeing. 

Participants explored a set of case study examples drawn from an ethnographic research project we carried out with a leading national UK bank, using real people’s stories to surface the “invisible economy” that so often underpins resilience and wellbeing. 

By decentring the bank and listening more closely to lived experience, the conversations highlighted how financial services can better recognise motivations, respond to emotion, and partner in new ways to support healthier financial lives.

WHAT I DO
My business activities are built on many years’ experience but in two distinctive fields – SME Business Development primarily in the UK, and Macro Economic Government Advisory primarily in emerging economies. Whilst these activities appear to have no connection, in reality there is significant overlap. With both these sectors I work with early stage businesses and help them grow, with a particular focus on Fintech and Women In Business.
I am a Published Author, Speaker, & BBC Radio contributor, have written 5 books and many published articles/chapters on topics including developing M/SMEs, Fintech, finance, renewable energy, PPPs.

HOW I DO IT
In the UK I run a business and finance consultancy and am an Entrepreneur in Residence, Mentor and guest lecturer at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), an Entrepreneur in Residence at Nottingham University, and a Mentor for the UKs largest Entrepreneur Accelerator as well as being a Mentor for Prince's Trust and Virgin Startup. In both capacities I work with SMEs at any stage from start-up to mid-size and act as mentor, trouble shooter, advisor, Advisory Board member and much more.
Internationally I run or participate in projects around the world helping countries by researching many and varied business and finance areas but often in the development of the SME sector and then writing reports, speaking at seminars and helping them to adopt international best practice. I have an MSc in Global Management and have worked in some 45 countries on 4 continents. 

WHO I WORK WITH
I work with entrepreneurs and SMEs that recognise that I can add real value to their business and I work with donor agencies such as The World Bank, EU, British and other governments, and private sector on international development projects and conferences.
