Been a year since I went fractional, and seeing lots of new faces here, so figured it's time for a proper reintroduction.

I'm Chuck Moxley, Fractional CMO for B2B and SaaS companies. Before this, I ran marketing at six SaaS companies and spent a decade in agencies working on brands like Chick-fil-A, Lee Jeans, AT&T, and Citgo.

The fractional journey has been interesting. I used to think "Fractional CMO" on LinkedIn meant "can't find a job." Then I became one.

Turns out it means companies get twenty years of figuring out what works and learning from expensive mistakes without having to pay for all of them. They get someone who's already invested $15,000 on gated ebooks that generated garbage, already learned July is when everyone's at the beach, and already discovered that CEOs don't actually care about MQLs.

I co-wrote a book called "An Audience of One" about one-to-one marketing that McGraw-Hill published. It's now being used in multiple universities' marketing curricula, which is pretty ironic considering I took a weird path through IT and never finished my degree. 

My co-author Jamie Turner and I originally planned to self-publish and use it as fancy direct mail. Then Wall Street Journal interviewed us about privacy, and suddenly we had publishers interested.

These days, I help SaaS and B2B companies fix marketing that isn't driving pipeline. Usually that means starting with messaging nobody understands, killing tactics that sound smart but don't work, and building programs that sales teams actually appreciate instead of mock.

What I've learned after all these years: The buying journey looks more like a drunk football play than a funnel. Sometimes the best digital strategy isn't digital at all. And most companies don't need more marketing – they need to figure out what they're actually selling and why anyone should care.

Black Friday doesn’t mean Black Friday anymore.

I walked into a store this weekend and everything was labeled Black Friday deals.

Except it was November 15th. Two weeks before Black Friday.

Retailers have stretched the idea so far that the term has lost the two things that made it effective in the first place:

Urgency and scarcity.

Black Friday used to be a single day people planned around.

Then it became a weekend.

Then a week.

Then “early access.”

Now it’s the entire month of November.

When every day is Black Friday, the moment stops mattering.
Consumers stop believing in the deal.

And the psychology that made the event powerful disappears.

What makes this interesting is that scarcity still works.

Brands prove it every year. Look at the limited-edition Starbucks bear cup chaos. When something is truly limited, people respond.

But Black Friday has become routine.

And when something becomes routine, it loses its signal value.

If retailers want the day to mean anything again, they need to bring back the constraints that made it effective in the first place.

Larry Latimer wrote 500 country songs. He was also the mentor who changed my entire career trajectory.

I was stuck between government contracts in my mid-twenties, coming into the office every day to do nothing. Literally.

When Larry flew up from Atlanta headquarters for a meeting, I walked in with a terrible attitude. I just had to demo our software and get it over with.

Then he asked me something nobody in management had ever asked:

"What do you think about this?"

Our 10 AM meeting ended at 9 PM. Eleven hours of talking strategy, growth, ideas I wasn't qualified to have. But he listened to every word.

A few months later, he called. He'd moved to a different division and wanted me to join him as a product marketing manager. We basically created the role together when I got to Atlanta.

Every week, we'd meet at Waffle House. He taught me sales techniques, goal-setting frameworks I still use today, how to think about business. Life lessons over scattered, smothered, and covered.

The bonus: My future wife worked three cubicles away in that Atlanta office. We just celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary.

Sadly, Larry passed away more than 10 years ago from complications after heart surgery. 

But his lessons shaped everything that came after - six CMO roles, a book with McGraw Hill, and now my fractional practice.

The best mentors see potential you can't see in yourself. They ask "what do you think?" and actually care about the answer.

And sometimes they've written the soundtrack to where they'll change your life.

$5.50 in revenue for every $1 spent on marketing.

We hit this by killing all our lead forms.

The decision came after watching $15,000 generate 106 ebook downloads. 

Half with fake emails. While 990 people bounced off our form to read competitor content.

So we ungated everything. Every guide, template, resource. Free.

Page consumption jumped from 1.5 to 5 pages. Return visitors tripled. Demo requests up 265%. POCs grew 900%. Pipeline multiplied 4.2X.

By midyear the following year, we'd generated 81% of the prior year's pipeline on 30% less budget. Then we turned off paid media completely and the pipeline kept coming.

B2B buyers spend months researching before they reach out. They're comparing vendors, building consensus, fighting for budget. If they hit a form while your competitors offer free content, you've already lost.

We also fixed our confusing messaging and stopped advertising in July when everyone's at the beach. But ungating changed the game.

The buying journey isn't linear. Projects start, stall, restart. Champions quit. Budgets freeze. New stakeholders appear.

Gates just add unnecessary friction.

My dad once got up in the middle of a movie theater and started touching the walls.

I asked him what he was doing. He said, "I'm trying to figure out how they make it soundproof between the two theaters."

That's who he was. Constantly curious about how things worked.

That curiosity infected me. When I was an intern photocopying documents in high school, I'd read everything while standing at the machine. Learned how contracts worked, pricing structures, margin calculations. 

Stuff nobody asked me to learn.

Now I'm 20+ years into my career, listening to 3-4 podcasts every weekend, constantly testing new approaches. The playbook I use today is radically different from two years ago. And two years before that.

My dad was a pastor who set up a meeting with a bank's head of marketing when I was about 15 to explain what marketing was. Always coaching, always pushing me to learn.

I tell interns and others early in their career the same thing now: You're going to be doing menial tasks. Use that time. Read everything. Ask questions. Learn what nobody's teaching you.

Because in marketing especially, if you're not constantly learning, you're already obsolete.

Two years and 50 episodes later, I still don't give podcast guests their questions in advance.

Early on we learned: if people know the questions (especially if they're nervous), they write out answers. Then they read them. And it sounds exactly like someone reading prepared answers.

We give them ONE question ahead of time. The same one we ask everyone. And guests still act surprised when we ask it on air.

The spontaneous conversations are always better. More honest. More interesting. More human.

Same goes for internal meetings, client calls, and pretty much everything else. Stop scripting the life out of your conversations.

Emma Sopadjieva just told me that 90% of what CX teams do has nothing to do with customer data.

Nick Paladino and I wrapped an incredible conversation with Emma Sopadjieva (she/her) from Samsara on The Frictionless Experience.  

She's built CX teams at Medallia, Eventbrite, ServiceNow, and now Samsara, plus she's advised hundreds of Fortune 500 companies on customer experience strategy.

Here are my key takeaways from my conversation with her:

- 90% of a CX team's job is influence without authority, not data analysis. You have to build relationships, prove ROI, and make other teams the hero.

- Quick wins matter more than perfect long-term strategies. Start with blind spots like purchase win-loss and renewal experience to show impact fast.

- Technology doesn't equal experience. Experience is the outcome. Stop throwing AI at every problem and think about when you actually need human touch.

- Predicted NPS beats renewal prediction. At ServiceNow, they used 5,000+ variables to predict customer happiness before surveys, then activated success teams early. The result? Better retention and more pipeline in six months.

- Project WOW at Samsara focuses on reimagining experiences across the entire customer journey, not just fixing what's broken. They identified five key moments and pushed every initiative to be a 10-star experience, not just a pain point fix.

- Happy customers at ServiceNow grew 24% faster per year than unhappy ones. That's the real ROI of customer experience.

Clark Barron says he hates the very concept of producing a minimum viable product with every fiber of his being.

When a company builds an MVP, they force marketing to make unfinished things look finished. And once you've done that long enough, you forget what finished even means.

Nick Paladino and I went back and forth on this. He thinks Baron is missing the point about deployment cycles and what you need to do. That this isn't about shipping CDs in the nineties.

But Baron makes three points worth considering. 

MVP turns marketers into apologists when your product barely works.
 
MVP erases craftsmanship - you can't build a legendary brand around placeholders. 

And MVP destroys marketing feedback loops because every failure gets misdiagnosed as "we haven't iterated enough" instead of "we shipped too soon."

Duolingo's Jackson Shuttleworth takes the opposite view. They test ideas quickly, iterate based on user feedback. Sometimes they got streaks wrong because they were building streaks for the purpose of streaks. Putting users through unnecessary hoops.

But they fixed it. They kept iterating.

Good enough to ship becomes good enough to stay. That's when marketing really does become damage control.
