During my time at Code for America, I was part of a cross-functional team that spanned Product, Engineering, Design, Research, Service Design, and Programs. Our core mission was to work side-by-side with government agencies to improve the delivery of safety net benefits like SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, and Child Care.

MNbenefits (Product)

I collaborated with Code for America's Integrated Benefits team and Minnesota's county-administered state to develop MNbenefits, a digital benefits application replacing the state's outdated legacy application, ApplyMN. MNbenefits enabled Minnesotans to apply for nine benefits programs in just 20 minutes or less. I played a pivotal role in expanding MNbenefits statewide, training workers across 87 counties and 3 Tribal Nations while simultaneously working closely with my team to manage software bugs and coordinate regular releases. Additionally, I managed stakeholder relationships with government agencies and partners, gathering diverse expertise to enhance user experience. 

Ex Parte Renewals (Process)

In the latter part of my tenure, I worked with Minnesota in our Safety Net Innovation Lab to streamline Medicaid renewals amid the Public Health Emergency Unwinding. We developed a semi-automated renewal process for one of the most at-risk populations needing to renew, the Aged, Blind, and Disabled also known as the Non-MAGI population. Collaborating with counties, DHS, service designers, engineers, researchers, and policy experts, we piloted the process three times progressively expanding the pilot's scope with each iteration. It evolved from a client-dependent, paper-based system to a 12-minute, caseworker-driven renewal process, eliminating weeks of back-and-forth that often leads to costly procedural denials and churn. I also played a vital role in interpreting policies and waivers, drafting client notifications, and helping automate processes that led to a reduction in caseworker and client burden.

Health Education
I facilitated bilingual one-on-one culturally competent counseling in a youth-friendly clinical setting. Both one-on-one and group workshops focused on topics such as birth control options, STD risk, treatment, pregnancy options counseling, healthy relationships, etc. 

Outreach
I worked closely with CBO, Mo Magic in San Francisco, to secure menstrual hygiene products during COVID. Most schools would normally provide these items to students, but because of school closures, we became an alternate site of distribution. On a weekly basis, we distributed about 80 kits every Friday during the pandemic to both New Generation Health Center and Homeless Prenatal Program clients. In these kits we also included Information on our clinic services and how to access those services during COVID. 

Eligibility
I supported patients by helping them sign up for programs that could help them access free sexual and reproductive health services. This included helping them apply to FamilyPact or referring them for to access MediCal or other affordable insurance programs through Covered California. 

Curricula 
I collaborated with Homeless Prenatal Program’s Wellness department to co-develop curriculum focused on sexual and reproductive health topics. These workshops were developed based on community needs and input. They were also translated into Spanish, the 2nd most spoken language by clients being served. 

Social Media
I reinvigorated our social media and developed weekly outreach materials/posts for our social media audience. These posts ranged from educational posts, to posts of support, and information/updates (i.e schedule changes, COVID updates, etc.)

Admin 
I provided basic MEA support, including scheduling, patient intake, the collection of vitals, procedure set-up, charting, and lab tests. I used basic public health strategies to build rapport with youth as a mandated reporter.

San Francisco Department of Public Health

During my time as a Disaster Service Worker, I was deployed to Maxine Hall Health Center in San Francisco. I assisted with targeted COVID vaccine outreach based on SFDPH vaccination guidance. In addition, I supported with patient flow, which fluctuated on a daily basis as vaccines were approved for emergency use. I conducted daily patient intake and scheduling as well as discharge for a flow of about 100-150 patients daily. Lastly, I developed clinic-facing materials (i.e outreach scripts, best practices, clinic flow breakdown, etc.) and standardized outreach training for incoming volunteers. Daily, I would train about 3-5 volunteers who would support with clinic flow and patient support.

Data Dashboard
I worked closely with IS, and senior leadership to develop a data dashboard used to track program outcomes and encourage the maximization of organizational assets. 

Curricula/Eval Development
I co-developed and translated 7 audience-specific Nutrition Education curricula and handbooks that aligned with our continuum of care model. In addition, we developed a new set of evaluation tools for each curriculum in order to facilitate the tracking of goals/objectives for a workshop or series. These were standardized, translated, piloted and then entered into our digital evaluation tracker. 

Outreach 
I led outreach and scheduling, conducting strategic and targeted outreach to our network of almost 400 partners. I also led our scheduling efforts, coordinating class distribution across our network of educators (myself and a team of 5-7 bilingual contractors), helping us reach larger audiences through their language support and overall flexible availability. 

Media/Communications
I worked with Marketing & Communications to develop outreach/educational materials across multiple programs and projects. We also co-created Yum videos, an educational tool used to promote healthy eating and the use of food bank foods through recipe videos. 

Trainings
I trained partner agencies on the implementation of Nudges at their pantry distribution sites, helping “make the healthy choice the easy choice” for panty participants. Nudges were strategically used to change the way people made choices about the food they were taking form a pantry without taking away other options.

Emergency work 
I provided D-SNAP outreach during the Tubbs fire in 2017. During outreach, a group of colleagues and I worked closely with county officials to strategically conduct street outreach in order to encourage community members affected by the fire to apply for D-SNAP assistance.

Senior Nutrition Education Program Coordinator

Nutrition Education
I conducted cross-county coordination, outreach, & scheduling of nutrition education classes across a network of 391 external new and returning partners. In addition, I also delivered bilingual nutrition education 1-time classes and multi-class series.

Policy, Systems, and Environment (PSE)
I developed and maintained PSE initiatives including CHEW and Nudges. CHEW is an internal nutrition tracking tool used to help partners easily identify healthy food choices on the warehouse shop floor. In order to reduce food waste and encourage the uptake of healthy food product, partners were trained on properly identifying and using CHEW on our shop floor. This was particularly useful for partners needing to select food choices for agencies with Healthy Food Policies (i.e. Boys & Girls Clubs, SFUSD, Etc.)or for agencies looking to be more mindful of their food selection. 

Nudges
Nudges are a behavioral economic intervention applied on our warehouse floor and our partner agency pantry sites in the community. Nudges are strategies designed to leverage cues in the environment that influences consumers' decisions. Partners were trained on the best way to set up a pantry distribution to encourage healthy foods while not taking away people's choice to other available options.

Translation
I served on the in-house translation team in order to help extend the reach of our programming in the Latinx community. This was ideal, considering the need for a translator familiar with internal language as well as the conversational Spanish needed within the community and for the development of community materials.

During my time at the USDA, I worked on the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) team as a graduate intern. I worked closely with other federal programs (HRSA, WIC, and SNAP) to identify self-sufficiency initiatives taking place at multiple USDA grantee sites across the Western Region. As a result of this data collection, I developed best practices for implementation to encourage self-sufficiency initiatives at HRSA sites, aligning with the USDA FNS' goal to increase self-sufficiency among SNAP recipients.

18 Reasons

During my time at 18 Reasons, I interned as a program coordinator. I had the opportunity to deliver bilingual, high-quality, hands-on nutrition education workshop series using a comprehensive pre-developed curriculum developed by Cooking Matters. I delivered workshops across the Bay Area to a diverse audience of English/Spanish speaking community members of all ages (youth, adults, seniors). As part of program delivery, I also coordinated, conducted, and tracked data collection on workshop outcomes.
