Recently, I had to explain what I do as a content writer at a social thing.

“So you... fix grammar for companies?”
Close. But also absolutely not 😂

Here are a few things non-writers assume when I say “I write content for a living”:

1️⃣ “It’s just writing, so it must be quick.”
Most of the time is not typing. It’s reading messy notes, asking follow-up questions, understanding the product, and deciding what not to say.

2️⃣ “You must be very creative with metaphors and big words.”
People imagine I’m out here writing, “my flabbers are gasted” in B2B copy.
In reality, half my job is deleting drama and saying, “This tool helps you do X faster, without Y pain points.”

3️⃣ “AI writes content now, no?”
AI can help with ideas, structure, and first passes.
But it doesn’t:
❌ know your internal politics
❌ understand what you can’t say publicly
❌ interview your customers
Someone still has to think, choose, and take responsibility.

4️⃣ “Oh, you work from home so you’re always free.”
Yes, I’m free. Free to stare at drafts, chase SMEs, rewrite intros, and argue with myself over one sentence that “no one will notice” but somehow everyone notices.

Lately, I’ve changed how I start a draft, and it’s cut my rewrites a lot.

I’m writing the conclusion first.
Then I write the introduction.

Because if the intro and conclusion don’t match, the piece is confused. And the reader will feel it.

What I’m doing now:

1, I write a rough conclusion based on what I actually found
2. I read it out loud to check if it sounds clear and believable
3. Then I write the intro to match the conclusion, not my initial assumption
4.I do one final check that both are telling the same story

This has helped me avoid:

✅ intros that promise one thing and deliver another
✅ conclusions that drift away from the original question
✅ rewriting whole sections because the direction changed mid-draft
✅ review comments pointing out inconsistencies

Why I stopped following content writing “rules” (and what happened next)

Somewhere between my 50th and 200th piece, I realised I was writing like a checklist, not a person.

--> Short sentences
--> No passive voice
--> Always a hook
--> Always a list
--> Always “8th grade level.”

It wasn’t wrong, but it just wasn’t me.

Here’s what I changed 👇

1️⃣ I stopped forcing everything to be short and “punchy”
Sometimes the idea needs a longer sentence. Sometimes the nuance matters.
When I let a paragraph breathe a bit, my edits got cleaner and SMEs stopped saying, “This feels oversimplified.”

2️⃣ I used passive voice when it actually made sense
“Your bonus was cut” hits differently from “Leadership cut your bonus.”
Both are useful in different contexts.
Once I stopped panicking about passive voice, I started focusing on what the reader needs to see on the page.

3️⃣ I stopped chasing perfect word counts
1,500 words because “SEO likes long-form” is not a strategy.
Now I write until the point is clear, then I stop.
Some of my favourite pieces last year were 700–900 words and did exactly what they needed to.

4️⃣ I allowed jargon when the audience genuinely uses it
“Revenue team” means something specific to some readers. So does “churn”, “DSO”, “embedded finance”, “A/B test”.
The rule isn’t “never use jargon”. It’s “don’t use jargon your reader doesn’t already live with.”

5️⃣ I stopped treating every post like it needed a dramatic hook
Not everything needs a clever opener.
Sometimes the best start is: “Here’s what this is about, and here’s why it matters if you do X for a living.”
Those intros performed better than the over-engineered ones.

6️⃣ I gave myself permission to learn new tools badly
New CMS, new analytics, new AI tools. I stopped telling myself “writers don’t do tech” and started clicking around.
Yes, I broke a layout or two. Yes, I fixed it.
The more I saw where content sits and how it’s measured, the better my drafts got.

My work felt more like mine, even when it had someone else’s name on it.

I still care about clarity, structure, and readers not suffering through a wall of text. I just don’t let “never do X” advice override common sense anymore.

There are 5 books in the series, and they’ve taken over my Sundays and my holidays. One chapter and suddenly it’s 2 hours later.

If your topic feels boring, it’s usually because 
❌ You're explaining instead of helping the reader decide
❌ You're listing instead of showing what matters
❌ You're being careful instead of being clear

Here’s the structure I use to make a “dry” topic readable and still SEO-friendly.

1. Write a definition that a search snippet could lift. One or two sentences, plain language
2. Add the consequence immediately. What breaks, what it costs, what it delays
3. Anchor the post around one decision the reader needs to make
4. Add one example early. A before and after, a mistake, a short scenario
5. End with a next step. A checklist or a rule they can apply today

If Monday is your writing day, there’s a good chance you spend the first hour “getting ready” and calling it work 😂

Here are 5 quick tip that help me get past Monday writer’s block 👇

1️⃣ Start with a 5-minute ugly draft
Open a doc and write the worst version of your idea for 5 minutes. You’re not writing “content”, you’re just getting the sludge out so the real sentences have space.

2️⃣ Write one clear sentence about the point
Before anything else, force yourself to write: “This piece is about X and it should help the reader Y.”

3️⃣ Change where (or how) you write
If the doc feels heavy, move. Different chair, different room, phone notes, paper notebook. A tiny change in setup is often enough to trick your brain out of stuck mode.

4️⃣ Steal a structure from something that already worked
Open an old piece you like and copy the structure, not the words. For example: intro → 3 problems → 3 fixes → summary. Plug your topic into that pattern and fill it in.

5️⃣ Lower the target for the day
“Finish a perfect article” is a good way to do nothing.
“Write the intro and two rough sections” is doable. When the target feels smaller, your brain stops treating the work like a threat.

You just need one small action that makes the blank page less dramatic.

I keep seeing this gap:

Great writers.
Decent briefs.
Average results.

And most of the time, it’s because the writer isn't thinking like a marketer.

Here’s what I mean 👇

1️⃣ You can’t write well for “everyone”
Marketers are forced to answer basic questions:
Who is this for, where are they seeing it, what do we want them to do next.
When writers don’t ask those questions, the piece sounds nice but lands nowhere.

2️⃣ Every piece sits somewhere in a journey
Top of funnel, middle, bottom, retention.
If you don’t know which part you’re writing for, you’ll either over-explain or oversell.
Thinking like a marketer means asking “Where does this fit in the bigger plan?”

3️⃣ “Good writing” also has a job to do
Sometimes the job is clicks.
Sometimes it’s a demo, a signup, or just getting someone to read the next thing.
If you don’t know the job, you can’t decide what to emphasise or what to cut.

4️⃣ You’re not just writing for a human, you’re writing for a channel
LinkedIn, blog, email, landing page – they don’t behave the same way.
Marketers think in channels by default.
Writers need to understand at least the basics: length, format, CTA, what usually works there.

5️⃣ Data is not an insult to your art
Open rates, click-throughs, time on page, replies.
Those numbers are not a verdict on your worth.
They’re clues.
Thinking like a marketer means asking, “Why did this work?” and “What should we test next?” instead of sulking when a post doesn't perform.

6️⃣ Tools are part of the job now
New CMS, AI tools, email platforms, analytics.
You will break something once, fix it, and move on.
Marketers live in these tools every day.
As writers, the more comfortable we get with them, the easier it is to see what our work actually does after we hand it in.

So, if you want your work to go beyond “nice phrasing”, you need to care about your audience, goal, channel, and what happens after someone reads.

Most of my week is screens, Slack, and Google Docs.
On Sundays, I try to do the complete opposite.

I’ve noticed my brain behaves better when it knows I’m off-duty.
The minute I stop trying to squeeze ideas out, they wander in on their own. A line here, a hook there, a way to fix a paragraph that annoyed me all week.

So I’m letting my weekends be slow.

I’ve realised I’m not reliable on a Monday.

As a writer, Mondays are usually a mix of catching up on messages, opening briefs, checking what Past Me promised to deliver, and trying to get my brain out of weekend mode. 

That's not the version of me I want making bigger decisions like “Should I take on this extra project?” or “Should I completely change direction on this piece?”

My Monday brain does two things very well: 
1. it says yes too fast because it wants the anxiety to go away, or
2. it says no too fast because everything feels heavier than it actually is 

Neither response is thoughtful

So now, if a big decision shows up on a Monday, I park it. I write it down in a note with a simple question: “Do I actually want this?” and “What will this do to my time and energy over the next few weeks?” 

What I do use Mondays for is simpler work: 
✅ reading through drafts
✅ doing light edits
✅ planning my week
✅ clearing small tasks I know I can finish in one sitting 

Anything that would change my workload, my focus, or my routine goes to mid-week when my head is clearer.

It’s a tiny rule, but it’s saved me from both types of Monday chaos: the “I’ve said yes to too much” spiral and the “I hate everything, I’m cancelling everything” spiral.

If you also write for a living, you’re allowed to admit that Monday you is not always Decision-Making You.

In 2025, I wrote 200+ pieces of content for clients ✍🏽

Blog posts, thought leadership, ghostwritten LinkedIn posts, scripts, all sorts.

A tracking sheet told me the number, but my brain just remembers the deadlines.

Here are a few things I’m taking into 2026.

1️⃣ Nobody is watching your work as closely as you are
I’ve spent days worrying about one paragraph. Most readers are skimming between meetings. That realisation helped me hit “send” more often instead of rewriting the same line 15 times.

2️⃣ But some people are paying very close attention
Every now and then someone will reply, “This is exactly what I was trying to say to my team.” Those pieces of feedback are the reason I care about the work.

3️⃣ Early drafts are not “deep,” they’re just messy
A lot of my first pieces from last year make me cringe. That’s fine. The more I wrote, the more I learned how to structure a post, ask for a clearer brief, and say things in plain language.

4️⃣ Talking to SMEs 
Some of my best pieces came from short chats with people who actually do the job. Asking “what do people usually get wrong” and “what do you wish buyers understood” gave me better angles than any amount of Googling.

5️⃣ Tools are scary until you break them once
This year I had to learn new CMS platforms and client workflows so I could help publish on their sites. I clicked the wrong things, broke layouts, fixed them, apologised, learned, moved on. There is always room for errors. You don’t have to treat every mistake like a character flaw.

6️⃣ Your “niche” shows up in your inbox, not a workshop
Certain topics get replies, follow-up questions, and “can we talk about this” messages. Paying attention to that has been more useful than any ideal-client exercise.

7️⃣ You are not for everyone (and you shouldn’t try to be)
Some people want hot takes. Some want heavy research. Some want quick, simple how-tos. It’s impossible to be all of that at once. The more I accepted that, the easier it became to write in my own voice.

Writing 200+ pieces gave me more chances to improve, mess up, learn new tools, and be a bit braver in the next draft.

I haven't been consistent here for a while, but here are a few things I’m taking from this (without turning it into a strategy sermon):

--> People can tell when you’re actually enjoying what you’re writing
--> You don’t have to post every day to still be worth reading
--> “Low-pressure” posts sometimes do better than the Serious Thought Leadership

This is small compared to a lot of creators here, but for me it’s a nice reminder that there’s still space for people who just... write, show up as themselves, and don’t overthink every single post.

“Monday has to be your most productive day of the week.”

New habits start Monday, new gym routine Monday, deep work Monday. 
By 11am you already feel “behind”.

For me (as a writer), this myth usually leads to:

❌ Trying to fix everything in one day
❌ Starting three drafts and finishing none
❌ Saying yes to things I don’t have space for
❌ Ending the day feeling like the whole week is doomed

Now I use a different rule for Mondays:

✅ Setup – I read briefs, organise tasks, and move 1–2 pieces forward instead of trying to conquer my entire to-do list.

✅ No big decisions – I don’t change direction on a project or make dramatic “I’ll do X every day now” promises. Those decisions wait for mid-week.

✅ Smaller wins on purpose – Clear one small pile, tidy one messy draft, plan the next two days in detail.

My week got a lot calmer when I stopped expecting Monday to be proof that “this time I’ve changed”.

Me wondering why January feels like 11 months compressed into 4 weeks

Lately, I've been writing a lot of technical blogs. And the most common question is, where do you even start with research? 

Well, I start with the support hub.

Here's my research stack:

👉 Support docs first 
Company knowledge bases, help centers, and troubleshooting guides. This is where users go when something works or doesn't. I find the real language, the actual pain points, the features that confuse people most.

👉 Forums where people are answering questions
Literal gold. Sometimes apps or tools have their own forum pages, and there's so much valuable stuff there.

👉 Review sites
G2, Capterra, TrustRadius. I filter by negative reviews to see what people wish the product did differently.

👉 Reddit
Specific subreddits for the tool or the industry. Someone's always asking "How do I actually do this?" and the replies are more useful than official documentation.

👉 YouTube walkthroughs
Could be from the company itself or could be from someone else giving a walkthrough. Sometimes a quick video explains a feature better than thousands of words.

👉 Webinars
Sometimes they have on-demand webinars, and those walkthroughs give me screenshots and images I can reuse.

👉 Product changelog/release notes
See what's been updated recently, what bugs were fixed, what features were added. This shows me what matters to the team and users.

👉 Twitter/X searches
Search for the product name or feature. People complain, ask questions, and share tips there in real-time.

All of these help me translate how a product actually works.

Research says Tuesday is the most productive day of the week for a lot of people

Managers in multiple surveys have rated Tuesday higher for getting real work done, with focus dropping as the week goes on

So I use Tuesday very deliberately:
 
▶️ I keep it as clear as possible for deep writing blocks
▶️ I put the hardest draft or the messiest idea on Tuesday
▶️ I avoid jumping between too many topics so I can stay with one thing longer
▶️ I use the second half of the day to refine what I wrote in the morning

It’s just paying attention to when my brain actually has the focus to do creative work, then planning around that.

If you write for work, it’s worth noticing which day gives you better thinking, and treating that day with a bit more respect.
