Then look at New Delhi— a capital with more funds, more infrastructure, more manpower— yet struggling every day with choked drains, plastic-clogged streets, and a permanently grey sky.

This contrast isn’t geographical.
It’s behavioural.

Mawlynnong proves that when people care, systems follow.
Delhi proves that when people stop caring, even the best systems fail.

So why is Meghalaya succeeding while Delhi is failing?

✔ Community ownership: every resident treats cleanliness as personal responsibility.
✘ Delhi: most people assume “someone else will clean it.”

✔ Zero-litter culture: waste goes into bins, not streets.
✘ Delhi: drains become dustbins, markets overflow, festivals end in dumps.

✔ Respect for nature: plastic use is limited, composting is common.
✘ Delhi: waste management collapses under volume + apathy.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Delhi doesn’t lack resources.
It lacks responsibility.

But it doesn’t have to stay this way.
Here’s what actually works:

🌱 2. Strict bin infrastructure — not symbolic, but placed, monitored, and maintained.
🌱 3. Community-led cleanups — because participation builds ownership.
🌱 4. Reduce single-use plastic — markets & RWAs enforcing alternatives.
🌱 5. Behavioural change campaigns — not lectures, but incentives and accountability.
🌱 6. Celebrate civic champions — make responsibility aspirational.

A small village stayed clean because its people decided it should.
A capital city became polluted because its people assumed it wasn’t their job.

The difference isn't a border.
It’s a mindset.

If Meghalaya can build a culture of care,
Delhi can build a culture of accountability.

And maybe it starts with a simple question:
What if we stopped waiting for the city to change…

Some images don’t need explanations — they reveal the truth in a single frame.

On one side of the border:
clean roads, organized bins, flowing drains, and a sense of shared responsibility.

On the other:
plastic-choked water, overflowing garbage, broken systems… and habits we’ve normalised for far too long.

Same rainfall.
Same terrain.
Same South Asian culture.
Yet two completely different realities.

It made me pause and ask myself — How can a border change behaviour so drastically?

But the answer is simpler than we think:
It’s not geography. It’s mindset.
Cleanliness isn’t a privilege — it’s a practice.
And Bhutan proves that civic sense is a culture you build, not a line you draw on a map.

India doesn’t lack resources, intelligence, or capability.
What we lack is the collective decision to care.

If we want cleaner cities, safer rivers, and healthier neighbourhoods,
we can’t outsource the responsibility to governments alone.
It starts with small, consistent choices:
🌿 Not littering
🌿 Using bins
🌿 Managing waste at home
🌿 Calling out dumping
🌿 Supporting local clean-up efforts

A border shouldn’t decide cleanliness.
People should.

And if Bhutan can build a culture of care,
there’s no reason India can’t lead with the same intention —
and even go further.

3000 acres. Once labelled danger zones — mining pits, dead soil, sewage-soaked land.
Places Delhi had quietly given up on.

And yet… today those same acres breathe again. 🌿
They’ve become 7 thriving biodiversity parks filled with orchids, butterflies, canopy forests, wetlands and fresh air Delhi forgot it could have.

All because one man refused to believe that land could be “too damaged to save.”

Prof. C.R. Babu and his team took what was waste… and rebuilt it into life.
Salt-heavy soil was revived. Lakes were restored.
Lost species started returning. And Delhi gained a green lung it desperately needed.

It makes you think — If 3000 acres can transform from wasteland to wonder… What’s stopping Delhi from creating more such pockets of hope?

Air pollution won’t be solved by outrage alone.
But by scalable models like this — restoring land, rebuilding ecosystems, and giving the city places that clean the air naturally.

Imagine 10 more of these. Imagine 50.

I saw two traffic jams recently. Both in India. Both frustrating in theory.

But they told completely different stories.

In Mizoram, a tribal state with limited infrastructure, people calmly left one side of the road open — not because a rulebook demanded it, but because behaviour built the system.

In Delhi, the capital of the country, the same situation often turns into chaos.
Lanes disappear. Horns take over.
Everyone pushes forward — and no one moves.

And that’s when it becomes clear:

Mizoram shows how behaviour builds cities.
Delhi shows how behaviour breaks them.

This isn’t about money. It isn’t about roads or flyovers.
It’s about civic sense — the invisible infrastructure that decides whether a city functions or collapses under pressure.

We often look for solutions in policies, budgets, and announcements.
But real progress begins somewhere simpler:

• When people treat roads as shared spaces, not battlegrounds
• When patience matters more than priority
• When responsibility doesn’t wait for enforcement

Cities don’t fail because they lack resources. They fail when everyday behaviour goes unchecked.

If a small state can manage traffic with discipline and respect, a capital city can too — if we choose to.

The question isn’t what more should the government build? It’s what habits are we building as citizens?

Because in the end, behaviour builds cities — or breaks them.

Every once in a while, you come across an idea so simple… and yet so revolutionary… that it makes you rethink everything we consider “normal.”

That’s exactly how I felt reading about Pritesh Mistry and the journey of Bioleather.

It started with one question:
“Can we make leather without harming animals — or the planet?”
The answer turned out to be growing in farms all across India.

Pritesh and his team found a way to turn wasted tomatoes — yes, tomatoes — into a durable, flexible, zero-synthetic material that looks and feels just like leather. No cruelty. No chemicals. No plastic hidden behind fancy terms.

But here’s what makes this story even more powerful:

India produces 43 million tons of tomatoes every year — and a huge portion of them never make it to the market. Bioleather turns that surplus into opportunity.

Farmers earn from produce that once had no buyers. Fashion gets a cleaner alternative. And the planet gets one less problem to carry.

What began in a college lab is now a real, scalable solution — proof that sustainability doesn’t have to come from massive factories, sometimes it comes from brilliant minds who dare to ask better questions.

Japan: Where people protect what they use
India: Where we use what we don’t protect

I saw this today — one from a Japanese railway station, another from ours.
Same idea of public infrastructure.
Two completely different results.

And it hit me:
India’s biggest gap isn’t technology, funding, or manpower.
It’s civic sense — the quiet discipline that keeps a public space clean even when no one is watching.

In Japan, the system works because the people do.
In India, the system struggles because we assume “someone else” will fix the mess.

But here’s the truth no one likes to admit:
Cleanliness is not a government service. It’s a collective habit.

💔 The problems we keep repeating:

• Trash on tracks, because bins are “too far.”
• Choked drains, because plastic is “everyone does it.”
• Zero accountability, because “it’s not my job.”
• Infrastructure destroyed faster than it’s built.

This isn’t a policy issue — it’s a behavioural issue.

🌱 And the solutions aren’t complicated either:

• Stop littering in motion — trains, cars, bikes, it all ends up somewhere.
• Demand bins, use bins — civic pressure works when citizens speak.
• Community cleanups that shift mindsets, not just dirt.
• Teach civic sense in schools the same way Japan does — as culture, not punishment.
• Hold each other accountable — gently, but firmly.

If a country with earthquakes, typhoons, and limited land can keep public spaces spotless…
What’s stopping us?

Not resources.
Not capability.
Just responsibility.

The day we start treating India like we treat our homes, our stations will look like Japan’s — not in design, but in discipline.

While Delhi wakes up to a 400+ AQI sky,
one woman is quietly proving that small spaces can create big impact.

I came across the story of Kishi Arora — a US-returned pastry chef turned urban gardener — and it genuinely shifted my perspective.

On her terrace in Delhi, she has grown a 1,000+ plant micro-forest.
No fancy technology.
No big land.
Just commitment.

And the numbers are unbelievable:
Her terrace absorbs nearly 10,000 kg of CO₂ every single year.
In a city gasping for air, she's growing her own green shield.

Desi veggies.
Exotic fruits.
Organic compost.
Homemade jams.
A self-sustaining ecosystem — right above her head.

And it made me think:
If one person can turn a terrace into a breathing haven…
what could an entire neighbourhood do?
What could a city do?

We often wait for policies to save us.

This forgotten waterway carried 500 years of stories…
but for decades, all anyone saw was garbage, stench, and mosquitoes.
Until a group of people decided that this drain didn’t need a cover —
it needed a comeback.

With smart design, citizen involvement, and relentless effort,
that same neglected drain is now a walkable, breathable, livable public space.
A place where families sit, sparrows chirp, and the air actually feels lighter.

And it made me think:
If one stretch of a city can change this dramatically,
what stops every Indian city from doing the same?

Urban transformation isn’t magic.

The day we start treating our drains, lakes, and streets as assets instead of afterthoughts —

Every time I watch a stadium being cleaned overnight after a big match, I’m reminded of something we rarely talk about.

Thousands of people.
Hours of noise.
Mountains of waste.
And by sunrise — the stadium looks brand new.

So here’s the uncomfortable question:

If we can clean stadiums overnight after matches,
why not clean our lakes after festivals?

Because the truth is this —
lakes don’t have staff.
Rivers don’t have maintenance teams.
Nature doesn’t have a contract with a housekeeping agency.

And yet, every festival season, India’s lakes are burdened with:

🟠 plastic bags
🟠 food offerings
🟠 toxic colors
🟠 idols with chemicals
🟠 puja materials that choke aquatic life

We celebrate devotion in the evening…
and leave behind destruction by morning.

But this isn’t a blame game.
It’s a systems game — and there are solutions:

So lakes don’t become landfills.

🌿 2. Community clean-up drives next morning
Just like stadium clean-ups, but for nature.

🌿 3. Strict “no-plastic puja” rules
Sustainable offerings only.

Flowers → compost → farms.

🌿 5. Civic fines for dumping puja waste
If rules work in stadiums, they can work at lakes too.

We don’t need fewer festivals.
We need fewer excuses.

And if a stadium can shine by morning…
so can a lake — if we decide it should.

Every time I drive through NCR, I notice something strange:
we’ve built malls on almost every corner of the city…
but we still struggle to build even a handful of places where we can breathe.

AQI is crossing 400+ again.
Schools are sending advisories.
People are waking up with headaches instead of sunrise.
And we’re still calling this “seasonal.”

The truth is, NCR doesn’t lack space. It lacks priority.
If we can build malls, multiplexes, and mega–commercial blocks at lightning speed…
why not air-purifying hotspots across neighbourhoods?

Imagine:
 🌿 Mini-forests under flyovers
 🌿 Clean-air pockets outside schools
 🌿 Green buffers around offices
 🌿 Outdoor HEPA towers in high-traffic zones

A clip from Andheri West shows people casually throwing plastic into a flowing water stream —
like it’s a routine, like it’s harmless, like it’s normal.

But the result is anything but normal.
Within days, the entire stretch is choked with waste, water struggling to move, and the ecosystem gasping for space.

And here’s the truth we often avoid:
This isn’t a city problem.
It’s a people problem.

We blame municipalities, politicians, systems —
but the plastic didn’t walk there on its own.
It was carried in our hands, thrown from our windows, left on our streets.

Cities don’t fail on their own.
We fail them first.

But the same people who create the problem can also create the solution:

Rajasthan is clearing parts of Dol Ka Badh Forest to build a “Unity Mall.”

A mall — replacing a forest that has existed longer than any of us.
And here’s the irony that stings the most:

We cut forests… then buy air purifiers.
We destroy natural protection… then panic about pollution.

Forests don’t just give shade - they hold groundwater, cool cities, clean the air, protect biodiversity, and maintain the balance that keeps ecosystems alive.

Cutting them isn’t development - it’s borrowing from a future that won’t be able to pay us back.

But this isn’t just a Rajasthan story.
It’s an India story.

Every city that loses green cover ends up spending crores fighting the consequences later - AQI spikes, water scarcity, heat islands, and climate migration.

So what’s the way forward?
Not outrage. Not hashtags. Action.

Here’s what actually works:
 🌿 Protect existing green cover — it's cheaper than restoring.
 🌿 Upgrade cities with air-purifying hotspots, mini forests & green corridors.
 🌿 Mandate environmental audits before clearing land.
 🌿 Involve citizens in compensatory plantation tracking.
 🌿 Build “green-first infrastructure,” not green-afterthoughts.

We don’t need fewer malls.
We need fewer decisions that cost us more than we realise.

There’s a universal corporate truth nobody trained us for:
