After 12 years working with 30+ B2B SaaS companies, here's what I've learned:Most engineering teams aren’t set up to solve UX problems. And when that gap exists, users get stuck, don't know what to do next, where to click, or why they should care.

The good news is fixing it doesn't take months of research or endless "what if we try..." cycles. It usually just needs someone who's seen this pattern before and knows what moves the needle.

Trials turn into paid customers because users reach value fast. Customers stick around because your product is genuinely intuitive. And all those features you've built actually get used.

Stop making your users work to understand your data.

Here are three major mistakes to avoid in your next dashboard:

1. Avoid tilted labels and unsorted data. Humans read naturally from left to right, so keep your labels horizontal.
Sorting your data series in ascending or descending order allows for an instant ranking of values. Also, skip the “rainbow” effect. Use a single, focused color to keep the attention on the values, not the decoration.

2. Don’t use pie or donut charts if you have more than 5 slices. Our brains struggle to compare angles and areas, especially when values are close.
Swapping to a horizontal bar chart makes even small differences instantly visible because lengths are much easier for the human eye to compare.

3. If you do use a donut chart, always start from a clear reference point (usually the 12 o’clock position). Without a consistent baseline, it’s impossible for a user to accurately judge the proportions. Always include values so your users never have to guess.

The Golden Rule: Unless you are working with specific date and time values, prioritize horizontal bars and sorted series to maintain visual balance and honesty.

Good data visualization explains rather than showcasing. Keep this in mind when you’re designing your next product!
