I know you’re probably curious about my name — April Strong.
It’s not my birth name. I was born Vijayalakshmi.

In 2019, my life fell apart. And in April 2020, one quiet afternoon, something shifted.
I felt strong — not in a motivational way, but in a soul-deep way. Like I was being reborn.

I no longer wanted the identity I had outgrown. So I created a new one — to honor who I was becoming.
Since I found my strength in April, I named myself April Strong.

Even though I was always a “good speaker,” I realized my life hadn’t fallen apart because of others — but because I didn’t know how to stand up for myself.

I used to read the story of the rabbit and the turtle as a child,
and honestly… it never made sense.

How can a slow turtle beat a fast rabbit?
It felt unrealistic. Almost unfair.

Because speed should win, right?
But today, we see it differently.

We’ve all seen incredibly talented, sharp, fast-moving people
start strong…

then get distracted, lose focus, chase comfort,
and quietly drop out of their own race.

And we’ve also seen others— not the fastest, not the most confident— but consistent.

They show up.
They keep going.
They don’t negotiate with distractions.

And they win.

The story was never about speed vs slowness.

It was about this:
👉 Speed without focus is wasted
👉 Consistency beats bursts of brilliance
👉 Discipline quietly outruns talent every single time

In life, in business, in communication…

We don’t lose because we’re slow.
We lose because we lose focus and we stop.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿.

A 10-year-old on a basketball court outplayed someone taller, stronger, and older.

Not because of muscle.
But because of the mindset.

She didn’t see any disadvantages. She saw an opportunity.
She didn’t play the opponent’s game. She played on her own.
Confidence is built before the moment, not during it.

Here’s what actually builds it:
• Prepare obsessively – Confidence grows from evidence. Do the work until doubt runs out of excuses.
• Focus on what you control – Your effort, skill, attitude, and consistency. Not comparisons.
• Stack small wins daily – Momentum creates belief faster than motivation ever will.
• Reframe fear as readiness – Nervous energy means you care. Channel it, don’t fight it.
• Speak to yourself like a leader – The words you repeat become the standards you live by.
• Act before you feel ready – Action creates confidence, not the other way around.

Mindset is choosing growth over excuses.
Confidence is trusting yourself even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

You don’t need to be the biggest in the room.
You need to be the most grounded in your belief.
Train the mind.
The results will follow.

Confidence is the skill that activates every other skill.
When belief is strong, strategy follows.

When belief is weak, even advantages collapse.
In business and life, it’s rarely about size, title, or experience.
It’s about the internal voice that says: I can handle this.

Mindset decides the score long before the game begins.

Confidence isn’t taken away loudly.
It’s taken away casually.
A comment.
A look.

Someone being talked over.
And once confidence goes, competence follows.

That’s the part most people miss.
You don’t need to be cruel to be honest.
You don’t need to be harsh to be direct.

Especially with people early in their careers, when confidence is still forming.

The way we speak decides whether someone grows…
or shrinks.

And if we don’t pay attention to how we communicate - to how we make others feel - we can end up becoming the villain in someone’s story without ever realising it.

That’s the power of communication.

Some losses don’t disappear.
You just learn how to carry them.

Even today, when I see a mother holding her child, something inside me pauses.

That used to be my whole world.
And for a long time, I kept asking, 
Why did life unfold this way?

But slowly I’ve realised something.
Life is not a reward system.
It’s a journey.

Some chapters close without warning.
Some things leave before we’re ready.

You don’t stop missing.
You just stop breaking from it.
You learn to stand… while carrying it.

The heart has a quiet strength.

It can hold both grief and strength at the same time.

𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

I watched a short clip that offered a simple shift in thinking:
Stop chasing excellence like it’s somewhere far away.
Start practicing it in what’s already in front of you.

We often wait for the big moment,
the ideal job, the major opportunity, the perfect stage.

But while we wait, ordinary moments slip by half-done.

Here’s the mindset reset:
✅ 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁
 It’s not someday. It’s how you handle this task, this conversation, this hour.

Send thoughtful emails.

Stop waiting to reach excellence.

Start choosing it - daily, quietly, consistently.

I recently watched a short clip from the movie 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 that carried a powerful message beyond sports.

In a quiet locker room moment, a young player stands before his teammates and speaks words that feel uncomfortably true. 

The tension in his voice isn’t about the game ahead - it’s about confronting something deeper.

A thought most of us rarely admit:
Sometimes we aren’t afraid of failing.

We’re afraid of what might happen if we actually succeed.
Success brings visibility.
It brings expectations.

And suddenly we can’t hide behind doubt anymore.
Here’s why many people unknowingly hold themselves back:
✔ 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – Standing out invites opinions, and not all of them will be kind.
✔ 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 – When you succeed, excuses disappear and responsibility grows.
✔ 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 – Growth often separates you from the familiar.
✔ 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 – Because once you see it, playing small no longer feels acceptable.

The powerful question raised in that moment is simple:
Who am I to aim so high?
But the real mindset shift is this:
Who are you not to?

As Marianne Williamson famously wrote:
“Your playing small does not serve the world.”

🌱 What This Means in Real Life
At work:
Stop waiting to be chosen. Speak up with the idea. Lead the project. Step forward when opportunity appears.

In your personal growth:
Trust that your abilities were given to be used, not hidden.

In leadership:
When you allow yourself to grow openly, you give others permission to do the same.

Because the real risk isn’t trying and failing.
The real risk is reaching the end of your journey and wondering
what might have happened if you had trusted your own potential.

So the next time doubt whispers “Who do you think you are?”
pause and ask a better question:

“Who might I become if I stop holding myself back?”

𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻.

Karan asks her:
“Do you think you deserved to win that night?”

A dangerous question.

Because most people, in that moment, would:

• Downplay themselves to sound humble
• Compare themselves to others to justify their win
• (or) Get defensive trying to prove their worth

But watch what Sushmita Sen does.

She says:
“Most definitely.”

No hesitation.
No apology.

But then, she does something rare.

She doesn’t compare.
She doesn’t compete.
She doesn’t reduce anyone else.

Instead, she says:

“I was my best that night.
Not because I was better than someone else…
but because I was my best.”

And then she acknowledges everyone else.
Their effort.
Their performance.

And even adds -
“There’s also a dash of luck.”

That’s presence.

The ability to say:
“I deserve this”
without needing to say
“and they didn’t.”

Here’s the communication lesson:

Real confidence doesn’t attack.
It doesn’t compare.
It doesn’t shrink.

It stands.

Calm.
Clear.
Certain.

Think about how most people speak:

“I mean… I just got lucky…”
“I don’t think I was the best but…”
“Others were probably better…”

That’s not humility.
That’s discomfort with your own worth.

Sushmita shows us something powerful:

You can own your success
without making it a competition.

Most people would:

• say yes… and unknowingly accept a label they didn’t define
• say no… and distance themselves from something that might actually be a strength
• laugh it off… and let the other person control the narrative

But the real risk?

You get defined before you even realise what you agreed to.

Because the moment you answer without clarity,
you’re not responding to a question -
you’re stepping into their interpretation of you.

But watch what Sushmita Sen does.

She pauses.
And instead of answering… she asks:

“What do you mean by diva?”

That one line changes everything.

Now she’s not reacting to his label.
She’s defining it on her own terms.

And then she goes one step further,
she gives her own meaning,
anchors it to someone she admires,
and calmly adds:

“If there are any hidden agendas, I’d like to know.”

Graceful.
Sharp.
Unshakeable.

Here’s the communication lesson:

Not every question deserves an immediate answer.
Some questions deserve clarity first.

Because in real life:
People don’t just ask questions.
They carry meanings.
Assumptions.
Sometimes even traps.

And the moment you respond without clarity -
you accept their definition of you.

Think about the workplace:

“Are you being too aggressive?”
“Why are you so quiet?”
“You’ve changed…”

Instead of defending, explaining, or shrinking,
pause and ask:

“What do you mean by that?”

That’s not avoidance.
That’s leadership.

Sushmita didn’t just answer a question.
She protected her identity in real time.

And that’s what powerful communication looks like.

Sometimes what people need isn’t the truth.
It’s 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.

That clip from Friends is sooo real! 

“Do I look fat?”
“Is she prettier than me?”

On the surface, it sounds like a question.

But most of the time… it’s not!

It’s someone checking how they feel about themselves
through your response.

And that’s where conversations get tricky.

Because if you answer only with logic,
you can completely miss what was 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 in that moment.

- not every question is about facts
- some questions are about how someone is feeling right then
- the same truth can land very differently depending on timing

It makes you think about how often
we respond to the words…

instead of the emotion behind them.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

A project manager sent one message to the team:
“Client wants the homepage updated ASAP.”
Sounds simple, right?

The designer redesigned visuals.
The developer adjusted the layout.
The copywriter rewrote the headline.
Everyone worked fast. Everyone worked hard.
Then came the review meeting.

The client said:
“I only wanted the banner text changed.”
Silence.
No one was careless.
No one was incompetent.

The problem was communication.
One vague sentence created multiple interpretations.
And this happens everywhere -
in teams, relationships, leadership, and even daily conversations.

We often assume communication has happened…
just because we said something.

But people don’t act on your intentions.
They act on their interpretation.

One unclear sentence cost the team hours of work.

You inspire us every single day.”
That’s what it said.

This morning, I logged into my usual session with my premium clients.
Like any other day.
No plans. No announcement.
Obviously, no one knew…
…it’s my birthday today.
And I had no intention of sharing it.
Birthdays don’t mean much to me.

Halfway through the session,
someone said,
“We have something to share.”
And suddenly, all of them held up posters.
Each one had a word.
And together, it formed a sentence:
“Happy Birthday April.
You inspire us every single day.”

Then, one by one, they shared…
What has changed for them.
What they’ve been able to do differently.
What this journey has meant.
And for a moment…
I just sat there.
Taking it in.

Because what they don’t fully know is this:
2020 was the year everything fell apart.
I still remember that day clearly.
I had lost everything.
My identity.
My sense of purpose.
My reason to keep going.
And the only thought I had was…
“I don’t want to live.”
There was no excitement.
No meaning.
No reason to celebrate being alive.
Just silence… and pain.

Today, six years later…
it’s very different.

2020 was a point in my life
when I had to rebuild everything from scratch.
And I made one quiet decision:
If I’m going to live…
I will either be nothing,
or I will be a blessing in the lives I touch.
There is no in-between.

That’s why I do this work.
Because I know what it costs
to not know how to communicate your truth.
I’ve lived that consequence.

Every now and then, I receive messages.
Small wins.
Big shifts.
Quiet breakthroughs.
And every time, it reminds me…
I’m on the right path.

But today…
it wasn’t one message.
It was all of them.
Together.

And it felt like something came full circle.

I still don’t celebrate birthdays.
But today…
felt like something worth pausing for.

Birthday Blessings!!

𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼, 𝗺𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗱𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲.

I opened it… and for a moment, I just paused.
It was a feature in Mid-Day.

And what surprised me wasn’t just seeing my name there…
It was the feeling it brought back.

Growing up, we would get 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 and 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 delivered at home.

But every once in a while, my dad would pick up a copy of 𝗠𝗶𝗱-𝗗𝗮𝘆 on his way back from a walk.

I remember picking it up occasionally…
Reading stories of people who had done something meaningful with their lives.
I don’t remember the exact stories.
But I remember the feeling.
A quiet sense of admiration.

Life didn’t exactly take a straight path after that.
There were phases where I was just trying to hold myself together.
Trying to make sense of everything that was falling apart.

That version of me would have never imagined this moment.
And yet… here we are.

Seeing this didn’t feel like a milestone.
It felt like something softer.
Like life had quietly come full circle.
And more than anything, it reminded me why I do what I do today.
To help people find their voice.

To help them feel seen, heard, and grounded in who they are.
Because I know what it feels like when you’re not.

𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴’𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

What stayed with me most was how much clarity emerges when we pause to really examine how we support young people today.

I had the pleasure of moderating a conversation with Suman Maheshwari and Goldie Uttamchandani, who work with young people from two different lenses - counselling and coaching.

What became clear through the discussion is that while the approaches may differ, the intention is the same: helping young people develop clarity, confidence and emotional strength.

𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲:

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲.
Young people open up when they feel psychologically safe, not when they feel assessed or corrected.

• 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀.
Trust-building and emotional safety must come first before we move into solutions or outcomes.

• 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁.
But the way support is structured can make a significant difference in how young people respond.

These conversations remind us that supporting young people today requires awareness, patience, and collaboration between parents and professionals.

To deliver consistently. 
To never let it show.

Burnout is rarely about capability. 
It’s about invisible expectation.

 You stay warm — without sounding small.
 You stay polite — without giving away power.
Words don’t just communicate.
They condition.

So choose language that expands you, not language that makes you disappear.
