I'm a long-time data leader, currently leading ReportingApplications.com, a consulting company focused on building - you guessed it - Reporting Applications.

Because they’re tricky to build in ways that most companies don’t realize until they are live with customers and dealing with unexpected business problems.

We believe there’s an art to building great reporting applications, but not many people have focused on this area deeply enough to become experts.

Prior to starting ReportingApplications.com I was the founder of Delivery Layer - a SaaS product that powered customer facing reporting applications.

Before that I was VP of Data Strategy at Helium 10 where I led all things data (Data Engineering, Data Science, Data Product Development and Analytics). I previously ran product & analytics with P&L responsibility for Nielsen Sports, the global leader in Sports Sponsorship data.
  
Early in my career I ended up with the mix of statistical, business analysis and programming skills that would turn into the ideal background for a data scientist. Since then, I've been leading data teams, building data products and running data businesses.

My philosophy is that data isn't the hero - it's the sidekick. It's only valuable if it improves the lives of your customers, or helps someone make better decisions.

Didn't even try chatting me up first about reporting applications. Had to block the little dude...

Led a fully self contained cross functional team over multiple countries and time zones, both contract and permanent developers to handle a variety of special projects and programs outside the normal channels as well as the routine business intelligence, data engineering and data science.

Often challenged to take on projects of an R&D or high risk nature with uncertain outcomes and requirements.  Used a Lean, Microservice based approach, focused on rapid iterative development and fast feedback.  

My team of 14 covered the following primary areas:
BI
Built decentralised GCP LakeHouse, with Data Mesh features and near realtime streaming.
Early build in SQL Server, migrated SSIS to NiFi, then moved the data first to Kafka & Drill (to support Tableau) and  into Google Cloud (PubSub, Storage and BigQuery, with CloudFunctions, and NiFi).  
Kubernetes, containers, and Cloud Compute, focus on Services.  
Near Real time Dashboards using DataStudio and Grafana, self serve analytics in Tableau.
Many 3rd party and internal data sources, data governance & catalogue, Master Data Management and security.

AI/ML
Real time ML Natural Language Processing of chats, chatbot, and emails in multiple languages. 
Migrated knowledge base data from Kana/Oracle to Google Docs and created a new Angular Back Office with Firebase guiding Agents to knowledge during their chats,  to attain accurate first time resolution and faster call handling.

New back office in Neo4J and Angular using NLP techniques to develop multi national Fraud detection allowed us to move from a manual batch process to a near real time stream workflow, with full supporting data, and restructuring business processes.

CRM
Consolidated SMS,Email,Calls into the core BI stack with near real time data.
Cleaned international phone numbers & emails, masking of contact details for Data Protection, user dedupe, blacklist/unsubscribe/optouts etc

In my time working in IT I have grown as a Developer, a DBA, a Data Specialist, an Architect, and an Engineering Leader; for much of it concurrently. As a result, I’m well accustomed to dealing with all levels within the organisation, and enjoy the position of acting as an interface between the more business oriented and those with a strong technical focus.

Moving from data to leading cross functional teams has given me the opportunity to look at the bigger picture, to tie information flows to business purpose, specialising in creating best fit Internal Data Products and Back Office Tooling using DevOps and SRE principles, and bringing practical benefits to many areas of the organisation. I thrive in environments where I can iterate rapidly, with fast feedback loops over MVP and prototyped or Proof of Concept delivery.

I’ve created real time Machine Learning and Knowledge Management Systems for Contact Centers, built fraud ring detection software, bridged information gaps in 3rd party provided software, and implemented CRM systems with event driven data streams.

I am excited about building technical teams, and enabling team members with diverse skill sets to grow by promoting a safe environment and core learning journeys for them to thrive and excel.
