I’ve walked parallel paths since I was 19, when I quit uni to build a 25 year career with the likes of Goldman Sachs, UBS, HSBC, Barclays and others.

I set up my first business alongside my first job, went on to build two jewellery brands, a business transformation consultancy, and a private practice working with 600+ founders and executives through High Magick.

All while navigating Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (c-PTSD)

Tough calls come with that territory, and often arrive all at once. But that wasn’t new to me.

Aged eight, I became a carer for my disabled aunt. It was violent and turbulent.

I had a front row seat to what happens when loved ones refuse to make obvious decisions, what it costs them, and me.

It taught me something most miss:

Your best decisions are made when you can be a bystander in your own life at the right moment - then move swiftly.

That’s tough for most people.

Time with my kids is boring.

My relationship is utilitarian. 

I hardly see my friends but I don’t really have the drive to either. 

I’m not really sure if I’m even building the business I want. 

I’m not unhappy necessarily, just a bit numb. 

I’m not really sure what the point of it all is. 

He said it all like a confession. 

It’s a confession I hear often. 

Nobody talks about this so it’s sort of a taboo. 

We somehow make it mean something about the person experiencing it. 

They SHOULDN’T feel that way. 

It’s not ok. 

The reality is that it’s pretty common. 

It’s not entirely unhelpful. 

The brain has decided it would be an effective way to allow them to cope with the stressors of life and business in order to succeed.

Like if you lived with a lion.

For a while you’d be constantly alert and stressed. 

After a while your brain would decide that the emotion just wasn’t of service. 

Especially when it realised you had no intention of leaving. 

Pretty soon all of life has a low emotional tone. 

Pressure situations become the only thing that feels normal ie work.

This wasn’t the life he wanted:

He wanted 

Meaningful work 
To get his health back 
To feel deeply connected to his wife 
To love spending time playing with his kids 
To be present and enjoying every area of his life
To experience a life of adventure again.

We took 3 important steps 

Reveal - we uncover the beliefs that were guiding his feelings, thoughts and actions.

Revise - we broke them down, challenged them and ultimately re-imagined those that were taking him away from the experience of life he wanted. 

Ritualise - we started acting them out in the world to teach his brain the new map and all of its benefits to create new habits.

6 months later and his life was beyond what he thought possible. 

If you’re feeling numb, or constantly low level alertness that doesn’t go away (unless you have a few beers) just know that there is a way out. 

It’s simple, systematic, predictable and repeatable.

I moved to Denmark with an experiment in mind (8 years ago) 

I had began to generate a hypothesis that I desperately wanted to test in the real world.

I’d already tried the system of setting up a business, working as hard as I possibly could for as long as I possibly could. 

Then heading home to recover before doing it all again. Often sacrificing holidays and weekends either to work or recovery. 

It’s a strategy with plenty of merit don’t get me wrong.

My new hypothesis was the opposite though. 

I was moving to Denmark with a completely blank slate. Step one was to put the kids school into the picture. 

Complete with pick ups and drop offs. 

Next I started to plan holidays, summer, autumn, spring, skiing in the winter. Then weekend summer house visits, visiting friends and having them visit us. 

Daily gym, reading, writing, new city exploration with my wife. 

The quality of your sleep determines the quality of your energy and health. 

What if the quality of your life determines the quality of your work? 

What you deem important and not.

The standards you are willing to settle for.

The type of people you’re want to be around.

The drama you’re willing to get into.

The creativity you’re able to bring to the table. 

The speed of your learning and the fresh perspectives you’re able to bring to the table. 

This is today a guiding principle that I operate from. 

Ive seen this transform my own life and work but also dozens of CEO’s and business leaders. 

I’ve seen these WEIRD things transform businesses and my clients lives first hand

Running
Horse riding 
Flying planes
Snow boarding 
Wake boarding 
Lunch dates with wife


Worries little brother is boredom 

Not just worry. 

Stress
Anxiety 
Interfering 
Idea dropping 
Drama creating
Confusion spreading 

When life starts to feel meaningless and even boring you bring that level of energy and creativity to the office.

But make life awesome and then bring that awesomeness and energy to those you serve. 

The impact is almost impossible to measure. 

I see the power of both strategies I do. But I know the life I want to have and who I want to be while experiencing this amazing life.
