I can coach a multi-million dollar proposal team, but coaching volleyball felt terrifying.

For years, I've lived and breathed volleyball—even having a court right in my front yard! But passion for a sport doesn't automatically translate into coaching skill. This thinking held me back.

Professionally, I'm confident coaching teams through complex proposals, government funding, and partnership strategies. 

But volleyball felt different. It was my pure outlet, my passion - what if I wasn't any good at it?

This year, I decided to challenge that fear. I took the leap and started coaching a regional training team of 15U/16U girls.

The results?

It's better than I ever imagined.

The skills I use in professional settings like mentoring, strategy, driving a team—are incredibly relevant on the court.

And yes, getting a clothespin that says "Fav Coach" at a tournament this weekend absolutely made my year! 🥳

My takeaway? Don't let the fear of the unknown sideline you. 

That simple phrase, "I don't know how to do this yet, but I'm willing to learn," is the easiest first step to unlocking unexpected growth.

I woke up sick today.

And for the first time in a long time, it is just a regular cold.

Not the kind that comes from pushing too hard for too long. 

Not the kind where you finally slow down, take a break, and your body crashes the moment you exhale. The vacation cold. The post-deadline flu. The crash that happens right when you finally breathe.

Our bodies remember what we try to ignore. They hold the exhaustion we keep pushing through.

So this time, I am grateful. Grateful that this cold is just a cold. 

Just a normal, human, everyday cold.

It feels almost like a sign of progress. 

That maybe (just maybe) I am finally learning what balance looks like.

Sometimes the smallest things remind you that healing does not always look like rest. 

Sometimes it looks like living at a pace your body can keep up with.

This week had wins. It also had moments of doubt, long pauses, and those quiet “am I doing this right” check ins.

That is the part of building something new that most people never see.

The good and the uncertain are always happening at the same time.

We launched things.
People showed up.
Feedback came in.
Progress is real.

And at the same time, I am learning, adjusting, and growing just as fast as the work itself.

It is a reminder that creating something meaningful is rarely smooth.

It stretches you, surprises you, humbles you, and energizes you… sometimes all in the same day.

If you are in a season where the wins and the wobble live side by side, you are not alone.

I AM A FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR.
Wait. What? Really? How did that happen?

I should have posted this yesterday.
You know, ON the ACTUAL National Women’s Entrepreneurship Day.
But for all the reasons I am sure many people face… I didn’t.
So here we are. One day late, still just as proud.

I never pictured myself in this world. I did the work. I led teams. I supported organizations. But entrepreneur felt like a title for other people.

And yet… here I am.

And what is EVEN BETTER than becoming an entrepreneur myself?

Building something with a cofounder who is also a woman.

Someone who brings her own brilliance and strength.
Someone who sees the vision and helps expand it.
Someone who wants to build something that makes a real difference.

There is something powerful about creating something with another woman who leads with integrity, purpose, and an enormous amount of heart. Shout out to you Sandra Saric!!!

So, to every woman who has stepped into something new, surprising, or brave this year… I see you.

In the past few weeks, I’ve had conversations with nonprofit leaders and a common thread keeps surfacing.

Everyone’s trying to lead through change while the rules keep shifting.

The opportunities are still there, but they’re smaller, faster, and harder to catch.

A pilot project here. 

A short-term funding window there. 

A new initiative that may not exist by next fiscal year.

What I’m hearing over and over again is that leadership today feels less like strategy and more like triage. 

Leaders are holding their teams together, 
managing funder relationships, 
and trying to stay innovative when the ground won’t stop moving.

The challenge isn’t just finding funding anymore. It’s learning how to diversify it. 

Resilience has always been part of this work. But agility, well that’s becoming the new superpower.

If you are a leader in this space, the best thing you can do right now is stay curious.

Ask what else your organization could offer beyond its current programs.

Reach out to partners in different sectors.

Look at where your mission intersects with economic priorities.

Diversification starts with curiosity, not capacity.

Yesterday I had one of those conversations that fills you with pure joy.

The kind where you pause for a second, smile, and think, THIS is why I do this work.

Someone I have had the privilege of working with just had their second proposal approved.

Seeing their excitement, their relief, and their sense of possibility made my whole day.

What makes it even better is remembering the journey, all the learning, the refining, the patience it takes to get to this point. 

Every funded proposal carries a story of persistence and growth.

I am so proud of the work they are doing, and so grateful to play even a small role in helping bring their vision to life.

Every now and then someone says something that hits you in a way you did not expect. That happened yesterday.

I was in a conversation that flowed easily. We talked about work and life. We were catching up because it had been a few years since we spoke and a lot had changed in both our lives. 

At one point she said she always remembered and valued that I wasn't an ego driven leader.

It stopped me for a moment because it reminded me why I do this work. 

I care about helping people work together in ways that feel honest, supportive, and real. 

I care about creating connection. 

I care about clearing the noise so teams and partners can do their best work together.

Her comment felt less like praise and more like a small reminder that I am on the right path. 

The work matters because the people matter.

It is raining here today and honestly… it matches my brain.
When it rains it pours and I am all up in my head about balance.

We have our very first Jedno workshop next week and I am so excited about it.

And yet here I am trying to walk that fine line between sharing something exciting for us and not turning my feed into a parade of promotions.

People do not come to LinkedIn to be sold to.

They come for connection and insight and a little bit of humanity.

So here is the balance I am trying to hold today.
I want to share what we are building because I know it will help people.
I also want to respect the space and the people in it.

If your feed is full of budget reactions and you’re thinking about scrolling past, I get it.

But here’s why it might be worth a closer look (at the document itself, not my post lol).

This year’s federal budget puts most of its weight behind a few big focus areas. 

Nearly 80 percent of the investments are directed toward two priorities: protecting Canada’s long-term economic and national strength, and reducing costs for Canadians.

The biggest areas of investment are housing, infrastructure, artificial intelligence and innovation capacity, national defence and cybersecurity, and support for businesses looking to scale or stay competitive.

There’s also a shift in how the government plans to spend overall: less on day-to-day operations, more on long-term projects it believes will shape Canada’s future economy.

What’s quieter this year are broader investments in education systems, immigration supports, nonprofit capacity, or community development — except for some targeted programs like youth employment and support for personal support workers in health care.

So while you don’t need to read every page of the 300-plus page document, it’s worth spending a few minutes looking up the areas that matter to you. 

Budgets don’t just reflect spending — they reflect priorities. And those priorities affect where opportunities flow next.

During a recent presentation, the facilitator asked a simple question:

“When you hear the word performance, what’s the first word that comes to mind?”

The answers filled the screen in a word cloud: results, excellence, consistency, mindset, success, talent, grit.

What struck me most was how few of the responses were about people.

So much of how we measure performance focuses on outcomes and efficiency, not the human side that makes those results possible.

Performance is more than metrics.

It’s Connection. 
Clarity. 
Consistency. 
Care.

It’s how people feel supported enough to keep showing up and growing.

There are moments in medicine that define who we are and why we choose this work. Scott McDaniel’s story is one of them. His words deserve to be shared in full.

His narrative:

I was a registered nurse in 1985, working at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center 5SE medical teaching unit. Patients were coming through with ARC, AIDS related complex. So many young men. I saw their frightened eyes. I was kind to these young men. We both knew their fate. Death. Yet I held on to hope.

One young man was burning up with fever and was on the bathroom floor. I laid down with him. I told him I loved him. He cried. We both cried. His name was Matthew. Not one family member showed up.

This is an ID photo of me from the early 80s. I was in my 20s, a young RN working in medical and pulmonary oncology teaching 5SW and 5SE at Cedars-Sinai throughout the 1980s. It was 1983 when the most admissions of AIDS patients started to come in. We did not call it AIDS then. There was no test for it. But we knew this disease was building.

Most of my fellow nurses were afraid they would get infected. Many of these patients were neglected. I would see their meal trays left outside their rooms. Many of these men had no family or friends who visited. I asked the charge nurse to assign me these young men. I interacted, bathed, encouraged fluid and food.

Most of these men died without any family or friends present except me. Many times it was just me and him all alone. I did this for several years. I loved and cared for every one of these brave men.

Later, I found out I had AIDS in 1995. I was told my CD4 count was below 200 and my viral load in the millions. I was the lucky one to receive the new drug treatment that halted my death.

I am now 69 years old and still alive. I remember hundreds of these scared brave men. Lying on the bathroom floor with one as he was burning up with fever, another crying out for his mother. I stayed and protected, cared and comforted these young men to the end.

This is the heart of medicine.

From Pain to Possibility: The Breakthroughs Transforming Patient Care

Regeneration is not one treatment. It is a system designed to help the body heal itself.

When people hear "regenerative medicine," most think of stem cells. While that is a key component, regeneration is much broader. It is a field that focuses on reactivating the body’s own repair mechanisms, addressing damage, reducing inflammation, and restoring function from the inside out.


I like to look at regeneration through three main pillars:

1. Biohacking
Biohacking includes scientifically proven tools that optimize how cells work. These approaches improve mitochondrial performance (your cells’ energy centers), reduce inflammation, and support the body’s natural ability to repair. Red light therapy, oxygen treatments, and hormonal balancing all fall under this category.

2. Peptides
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as messengers in the body. They can help repair tissue, regulate hormones, strengthen the immune system, and stimulate regeneration where it is needed most. They are one of the most exciting frontiers in modern medicine because of how precisely they can target cellular processes.

3. Stem Cell Therapies
Stem cells are the body’s original building blocks, capable of developing into many other types of cells. They can repair tissues, calm inflammation, and help prevent the need for invasive surgery. When used properly, they give patients new options for healing beyond traditional pharmaceuticals.

I am sharing a message that comes straight from the core of why I do this work.

My journey in spine surgery has never been about hardware or technique. It began the first time I watched a patient walk again after being told they never would. It began the first time I saw fear turn into hope. Those moments stayed with me. They changed me.

For years I have lived inside an operating room, solving problems with precision and structure. But there comes a point when you realize that the body wants to heal. It is wired for it. And our job as physicians is not only to fix what is broken, but to uncover what the body has not forgotten. Its own intelligence.

That is why I talk about innovation in spine care. That is why I push for better diagnostics, regenerative therapies, light based treatments, mitochondrial health, and personalized strategies that honor the whole person. Because when you sit across from a patient who wants their life back, you understand that managing symptoms is not enough. People deserve more. They deserve a future where healing is possible, not accidental.

I am on a mission because I have seen too many lives changed in an instant. And I believe our responsibility is to meet that urgency with care that matches the moment.

Some patients remind you why you can never stop learning, searching, or fighting for better answers.

Today I want to share a story that moved me deeply. A patient came to us after years of struggling with long covid symptoms that had taken away her clarity, her confidence, her voice, and her sense of who she was.

She had been told she had an autoimmune condition no one could name. She had been told there was no cure. She had been told to learn to live with it.

She pushed through brain fog so severe she avoided conversations.
She dealt with exercise fatigue so limiting she could not move without crashing.
She lost her words when she became nervous.
She even lost her singing voice, something that had been part of her identity for years.

She had been to specialists across the country.
Chicago. Mayo. Voice centers. Lung evaluations.
Everyone found pieces of the problem, but no one could help her put her life back together.

When she walked into our clinic, she still had no hope.
But she was willing to try one more time.

After starting treatment with us, everything changed.
Her clarity returned.
Her voice became stronger.
Her energy started coming back.

And the people who loved her said the words she had been waiting to hear for years:

“Welcome back.”


These are the stories that keep me up at night thinking about what else we can do.

These are the stories that push me to study harder, learn more, and never accept that suffering has to be permanent.
These are the patients who remind me why I chose this path in the first place.

There are many people living with long covid who feel forgotten.
There are many who believe there is no path forward.
But there is hope. Healing is possible.

To this patient, thank you for trusting us.

For decades, medicine has done an incredible job treating infectious diseases.

The Escalating Crisis in U.S. Health Insurance

Two stories stayed with me this year.
A 23 year old woman who survived a devastating fall that broke her neck.
A 47 year old laborer whose back injury threatened his ability to work again.

Different circumstances. Different paths.
But both faced the same reality.
A single moment changed everything.

What connects their journeys is not where they were treated.
It is what their recoveries remind us.
The human body has a remarkable capacity to heal when science, timing, and the right treatment strategy come together.

We need to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible in spine care. Patients deserve options that protect their independence and their future.

Concussions are far more common than people realize. 

I see this every week in my clinic. They are not simple injuries and they do not always follow a predictable path. Some patients recover quickly. 

Others struggle for months or years. And the truth is that many concussions are missed in the first place.

What concerns me most are the patients who were never asked the right questions, never evaluated properly, and were told there was nothing more to do. These are the patients who have been living with chronic symptoms that could have been addressed earlier.

There are science based treatments that help. Light therapy for the brain is one of them. I have worked closely with leaders in this field, including Dr Theodore Henderson and the team at Harvard under Dr Paolo Cassano. They say a picture is worth 1000 words and I think that this picture sums up a lot of what is wrong with our current medical system

My patient came in today and had this nice assortment of medication bottles in her walker basket (and she gave me consent to post it)

I see patients on a daily basis that come in with bags of medications, and sometimes even just a bunch of mixed pills that they recognized by their color and know what time to take them. My patient today admitted that she doesn’t understand why she’s on most of these. 

Polypharmacy, although in some cases as indicated has become an all to common phenomenon and many of these patients when asked, don’t even know what half of their medication’s are even being prescribed for

We can do better than this and must change how we approach disease as we are losing the war

The good news is that there is a better way and there are so many great physicians out there that are actively trying to get their patients off of medication’s

Seeing patients like this over the last 20 years is what really drove me into the integrative health space

Thanksgiving always slows me down in the best way. It makes me step back from the noise, the schedules, the cases, and remember why I do this work in the first place.

At the center of everything I do are the people. The patients who sit across from me and trust me with their fears. The families who show up tired but hopeful. The teams who give their all so that someone else can have a better day than yesterday.

And to every one of you who follows along here, who reads, comments, asks questions, and shares your own stories, thank you. You may not realize it, but your support fuels me. It pushes me to keep digging for answers, keep showing up, and keep fighting for better ways to help people heal.

We would never try to fix a broken laptop by downloading new software.
If the hardware is damaged, the software will never run the way it should.

Yet this is exactly how we have treated concussions for decades.

We focus on symptoms, mood, memory, and cognition while ignoring the fact that the body’s hardware has taken a direct hit.
When the underlying systems are inflamed, underpowered, and struggling to communicate, no amount of talk therapy, rest, or medication can restore function.

It is time to reframe how we think about concussions.

First we repair the hardware.
Then we support the software.

When we target the physiology that was disrupted
when we restore cellular energy
when we reduce inflammation
when we bring blood flow and oxygen back to the regions that need it most
the improvements can be dramatic.

People regain clarity.
Their energy returns.
Their nervous system stabilizes.
And the “software problems” begin to resolve because the foundation has finally been repaired.

Concussions are not just brain fog or headaches.
They are a hardware injury that deserves a hardware solution.
The outcomes we are seeing when we treat them this way are far better than what traditional approaches have offered.

It is time to stop managing symptoms and start rebuilding the system that makes recovery possible.
