They said I was too much.
Turns out they were too limited.

A brilliant CHRO told me recently: "Steven, I've spent 15 years toning down my opinions, holding back, pretending shallow conversations were enough when depth is all I've ever craved."

I understood immediately.

I've lived it too.

Softened my directness to seem "diplomatic."
Smoothed my edges to appear "approachable."
Pretended small talk satisfied me when I was hungry for real connection.

And I ended up feeling like an outsider.

Because I WAS an outsider in places where I'd shrunk myself just to belong.

The pond people have labeled me:

→ Too quiet (meaning: you're hard to read, and that unsettles me)
→ Too direct (meaning: you skip the performance, and I can't handle that)
→ Too intense (meaning: you make me think, and I'd rather not)

But two decades as a CHRO taught me this: Every time you shrink yourself, you train people to expect less from you.

When you're constantly making yourself smaller:
→ You attract relationships that require you to stay small
→ You master the art of being less than you are
→ You construct a career that fits everyone but you

I once believed the introvert advantage meant networking like an extrovert. Speaking louder. Being more visible.

I was wrong.

The true advantage? Recognizing that your need for substance IS your value.

When I stopped apologizing for choosing depth over surface, everything shifted.

1️⃣ You stop dimming your light so others feel comfortable in their mediocrity.

2️⃣ You surround yourself with people who see your intensity as integrity.

3️⃣ You discover your tribe. The ones who view thoughtfulness as strength, not a flaw to fix.

The teams needing someone to navigate complexity? They relied on me.
The cultures hungry for authentic leadership? They found me.

But only because I showed up fully. Not the diluted version.

Not everyone can handle you at full strength.
That's not yours to fix.

The people meant for you? They'll swim out to meet you in deep water, even if it scares them.

The rest will stay on shore, insisting the ocean is "too much."

Let them.

You're Not Just 'An Introvert' (Most Advice Is Wrong)

The loudest person in your meeting just killed your best idea.

My manager and I were both right. That was the problem.

For two years, it felt like constant friction.

I thought he was shutting me down.
He thought I was being difficult.

Same situation. Different sides of it.

As an introvert, I'd come to every meeting overprepared.
Arguments rehearsed in my head.
Draining myself trying to be heard.

I didn't need louder words.
I needed a different question.

Help me see what you're seeing.

Those seven words changed my career.

I was protecting the project.
He was protecting the people.

Same end. Different direction.

That conflict wasn't toxic.
It was just incomplete.

I stopped needing to win.
I started wanting to understand.

Twenty years in HR, I learned something.
You don't need to be right to move forward.
You need to be willing to see the other side.

I don’t write much from my personal life but sometimes the stories are too good to ignore... And this is one of those.
 
For last Friday, the younger son had one *𝑠𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒* task... 
Bring home his schoolbook so we could prepare for an upcoming exam.

To be fair, he’s doing well - grades are good, even if he doesn’t always do 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 homework assignment the way I would hope.

Well, he comes home on Friday… 
We check that new homework are done and I continue working.... (without remembering the whole upcoming exam and the book that he should have token to home...) 

Then suddenly he comes back to my room with his phone in his hand and starts; 
“Dad, I forgot the exam book to the school”... 

At this point my first reaction was the human one and I almost screamed “𝑊𝑎𝑖𝑡… 𝑤𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑖𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠. 𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑑𝑖𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑜𝑜𝑘?”.... 

Luckily I was able to hold it back for a moment because he continued. 
“It’s fine, I got pictures from my friend of all the chapters we need to study.”

I did took a deep breath and though about the topic.
Sure, he 𝑓𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑑 𝑖𝑛 ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝑡𝑎𝑠𝑘 - 
But he 𝒅𝒊𝒅𝒏’𝒕 𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒍 𝒊𝒏 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒃𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒔:
Being able to study for the exam during the weekend. 

He owned the goal - figured out how it could be archived. 
And he delivered the outcome in his own way.

Who am I to judge the method when the result *and the ownership* was there?

So... I thanked him for taking responsibility, and over the weekend we studied the chapters from the photos. 
And it worked perfectly.


𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠?
𝑇𝑟𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑤𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝 𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑓𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛.

When people take responsibility for the outcome, they’ll find a way - sometimes a better one than the plan we had in mind.

𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 is one of those words that sounds reassuring.

You know...
We align in meetings.
We align on slides.
We align before moving forward.

Everyone nods.
Everyone agrees.
People are happy. 

And then… 
execution starts, 
and reality hits.

People are doing different things than expected.

Not because they ignored the decision.
That’s rarely the case.

When this happens, leaders often assume:
* People didn’t listen
* People weren’t committed
* People made the wrong call
...More often, none of that is true.
 
In reality the agreement was never the problem.
The challenge is the life - 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞.

And alignment built only around tasks doesn’t survive that moment.

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬.
