They said I was too much.
Turns out they were too limited.

A brilliant CHRO told me recently: "Steven, I've spent 15 years toning down my opinions, holding back, pretending shallow conversations were enough when depth is all I've ever craved."

I understood immediately.

I've lived it too.

Softened my directness to seem "diplomatic."
Smoothed my edges to appear "approachable."
Pretended small talk satisfied me when I was hungry for real connection.

And I ended up feeling like an outsider.

Because I WAS an outsider in places where I'd shrunk myself just to belong.

The pond people have labeled me:

→ Too quiet (meaning: you're hard to read, and that unsettles me)
→ Too direct (meaning: you skip the performance, and I can't handle that)
→ Too intense (meaning: you make me think, and I'd rather not)

But two decades as a CHRO taught me this: Every time you shrink yourself, you train people to expect less from you.

When you're constantly making yourself smaller:
→ You attract relationships that require you to stay small
→ You master the art of being less than you are
→ You construct a career that fits everyone but you

I once believed the introvert advantage meant networking like an extrovert. Speaking louder. Being more visible.

I was wrong.

The true advantage? Recognizing that your need for substance IS your value.

When I stopped apologizing for choosing depth over surface, everything shifted.

1️⃣ You stop dimming your light so others feel comfortable in their mediocrity.

2️⃣ You surround yourself with people who see your intensity as integrity.

3️⃣ You discover your tribe. The ones who view thoughtfulness as strength, not a flaw to fix.

But only because I showed up fully. Not the diluted version.

Not everyone can handle you at full strength.

My manager and I were both right. That was the problem.

For two years, it felt like constant friction.

I didn’t grow up in a way that told me to stay inside the lines.
I grew up following sparks, testing ideas,
and chasing whatever lit up my brain.

Neuroscience shows that play isn’t childish.
 It’s cognitive fuel.
 It builds flexibility.
 It boosts creativity.
 It strengthens neural pathways.

Adults don’t stop playing because they mature.
They stop playing because they start performing.

They trade curiosity for correctness.
They trade imagination for efficiency.

Your brain feels that loss instantly.
When play goes down,
problem solving goes down with it.

The most important part of surviving a toxic boss?

Recovery.

When I worked with a toxic (client),
I’d walk out of the meeting telling myself I was fine.
The meeting was over.
But, my nervous system didn’t get the memo.

My jaw stayed tight.
My mind replayed everything.
My body stayed braced for hours.

That’s where the real damage happens.
Not during the interaction.
After it.

Here’s how to recover properly
so it doesn’t live in your body all night.

1/ Interrupt the replay loop
 The brain replays to keep you alert.
 Rumination keeps cortisol elevated.
 Do this: say internally “this is over, I’m safe now.”
 Do this: redirect attention to a neutral task.

2/ Discharge stored stress
 Stress is energy mobilized in the body.
 If it doesn’t move, it stays.
 Do this: walk, stretch, or shake for two minutes.
 Do this: take slow breaths with longer exhales.

3/ Separate their energy from yours
 Emotions transfer under power imbalance.
 Your system absorbs more than you realize.
 Do this: say “that emotion belongs to them.”
 Do this: feel your body where you are now.

4/ Re-anchor safety in the present
 Your nervous system needs proof the threat passed.
 Logic alone won’t do it.
 Do this: look around and name five objects.
 Do this: feel your feet and your breath.

5/ Rebuild self-trust
 Toxic encounters quietly create self-doubt.
 Confidence collapses after the fact.
 Do this: say “I handled that.”
 Do this: remind yourself “I survived that.”

6/ Create meaning later
 Analysis while activated reinforces threat.
 Growth sticks only after regulation.
 Do this: delay reflection until calm returns.
 Do this: ask what this showed you about boundaries.

7/ Reset through healthy resonance
 The social nervous system calms with safety.
 Connection counteracts stress chemistry.
 Do this: have a brief calm conversation.
 Do this: share a moment of lightness or laughter.

8/ Close the stress cycle intentionally
 Unclosed loops spill into the next day.
 Your body needs an ending signal.
 Do this: create a short closing ritual.
 Do this: walk, shower, journal, or play music.

The meeting ends.
Recovery decides whether the stress does.
