Sales is less about being great at “selling”, and more about being resilient to handle the losses with grace in order to hang on for the wins.

i’m not always been great at that and I’ve taken the loss - at times -  pretty hard over the last 26 years.

But, over time, I’ve learned that 

- Follow Up Matters 

- Persistence can’t turn a no into yes. 

- Unqualifying is great and necessary for fast growth venture backed SaaS companies. In Service companies, you are literally there to serve.  No’s do become yes’s in time, but not if your are an asshole and disregard them quickly. 

- It is always an average. Refine, repeat. This loss doesn’t define you just like the next win doesn’t define you.

I used to put my weight in how many impressions a post would get, or how people would react to something I posted…., waiting for leads to pour in. 

About a year ago  I realized how silly that was and how damaging it can be.  

What goes up must come down and that goes for the ego as well.

Now, I rely on the quality of the work to do the talking.  

And it works, extremely well.

Leader and manager for a multi-state territory (Utah, Idaho and Montana) in SaaS and Ed-Tech with colleges and universities involving 7,500 student enrollments and higher. Responsible for all sales growth, management and business/partnership development of territory including budgeting, forecasting, acquiring new sales and contracts, working with production and marketing management.
Responsible for acquiring and project development of custom web and print solutions for the Higher Education market.

I worked with the Sales and Marketing Team to build long-term sales relationships with new and existing clients and worked to market and promote services/space to internal and external clients. I frequently established and maintaining relationships with University, private and government clients. I often represented the University Guest House and Conference Center in the community at chapter meetings, Visit Salt Lake, and other local business groups. On a weekly basis. I responded to sales inquiries, initiate new sales, meet with and maintain client accounts, direct site visits, direct and develop sales forecasting and budgeting strategies in order to exceed RevPAR (Revenue per available room) as well as meeting space and sleeping room goals for 180 sleeping rooms and 30,000 square ft of meeting space.

Directed, developed, hired and managed a program of 50 individuals. Working as a liaison between IIC staff and crew members as well as federal partners and project leaders I built relationships and exceeded program goals. Each week I would participate in and conduct project planning, logistics, negotiation, marketing and program development for the IIC program. I directed the management of up to 8 crews at one time involving projects with federal and state agencies. Through my position I would coordinated budgets and schedules as well as logistics for all crews and projects.
