The biggest stage of my life.
Xerocon 2019.
Six years ago to the day.

That ‘Motivational’ keynote didn’t just change my trajectory…

it changed the direction of so many people in that audience too.

I genuinely and still get messages each month about it to this day.

And here’s what most people never see.

The meeting a week before with Gary Turner then MD, who threw my name in the ring in the run up and of course gave me the greatest brief ever.

“They will have been at the party the night before, we need you to wake up the ‘largely’ hungover accountants…”

“Oh… and a maximum of 2 swear words please”

If I’d tried to skip the steps, (I of course did, as we all do) I’d have also skipped the lessons.

Every Brewers Fayre, every Holiday Inn Express, the hundreds of small rooms, with a noisy coffee machine, grinding beans, every Tuesday morning crowd… I’d spoke at…

Is what prepared me for this moment.

Those sometimes uncomfortable reps are what made the “big one” possible.

And that day also set me on the path to the accountancy world, a community I’m still proud to serve and speak for now.

So if you’re at the start of something…
or you feel miles away from where you want to be…
Please don’t rush the climb.

Don’t chase the shortcut.
The steps are the training, the reps are the advantage.

The journey is how you earn the stage you’re aiming for.
