H&R Block

I met the CEO of H&R Block at my college bar, and talked my way into an interview. He had recently hired a young, 32-year-old McKinsey consultant called Kush. Kush gave me a call, saw a little of himself in me and decided to hire me on the spot. 

Here's what I did:

- Business Development / Mergers & Acquisitions - Block had $1B+ of cash, so we looked for acquisition targets and presented business case to senior management. Literally not a single deal went through. 

- Strategy - In-house strategic consulting for different business units within Block. We looked at what Block should do with their 11,000+ retail outlets for the 9 months of non-tax season. 

- Research – Pricing research for in-store retails services. Looked at competitor, industry and market data. Presented recommendation of pricing and impact to bottom line directly to the CEO and other execs

How to do Product / Brand Launches: 

I've built a 10-week launch playbook that regularly generates millions of impressions.

We used it last week to launch Coworker.ai earlier this year and hit:
1,000,000+ social impression
25 media outlets
250+ inbound demos


Here's How:


Every founder dreams of launching with a big bang. Most fail miserably.

Not because the product is bad. But because they treat launches like an afterthought - something scrambled together a week before going live.

Two fundamental truths about launches:

1/ Launching isn’t about releasing a product - it’s about claiming mindshare

2/ The best founders launch consistently.

Take OpenAI and Anthropic. They launch almost weekly now, even when the capability has been around for weeks (like Perplexity for Finance - no new features, just claiming mindshare).

While you should launch all the time, not all launches are equal:

P0 launch: Launch the company itself - not just a product, but a worldview about why things must change

P1 launch: Major new products or markets.

P2 launch: Features and updates.

P0 launches matter most. They’re about establishing that a problem exists that shouldn't. This is counterintuitive because founders love their solutions.

But customers don't care about your solution until they agree with your problem.

Artisan AI's recent launch nailed this: They didn't launch "AI sales agents". They launched the idea that human salespeople were becoming obsolete.

Controversial? Yes.
Memorable? Absolutely.

Did it work? They raised their $20M+ Series A weeks later

P0 launches should feel risky.

If your launch feels safe, you're probably doing a P2 when you think you're doing a P0.

The difference matters because P0 launches create categories, while P2 launches iterate within them.

3 common mistakes most founders make with P0 launches:

1. They try to look legitimate instead of being memorable.

2. They launch to everyone vs someone: A P0 launch needs emotional specificity. You're not just solving a problem; you're creating a feeling (fear of falling behind, excitement about what’s possible, etc). Pick one. Own it completely.

3. They think of the launch as an event. Really, it's a 10-12 week campaign (before and after launch)

With a P0 launch, you're launching a worldview. 
The product is just proof it’s actionable.

Call me old school, but I like startup names that are clear over clever.

Names I prefer:

Salesforce.... is a better name than... Hubspot 
HeyReach... is a better names than... Trigify
Outreach... is a better name than... Apollo
Intently... is a better name than... Pocus
Salesloft... is a better name than... Clari
RB2B... is a better name than... Vector
Airtable... is a better name than... Notion
WeWork... is a better name than ...

(This doesn’t mean they are better products or companies. Just strictly better names)

Consumer / PLG tech is full of great examples:

- Facebook
- Instagram
- Snapchat
- Dropbox
- OkCupid
- Linkedin
- Netflix
- PayPal
- Canva
- Gmail

They do this because recall value is critical for consumer brands

There are some amazing exceptions offcourse: Tinder, Twitter, Slack, Spotify etc


Sometimes, startups need to rebrand when they outgrow their starting category.

Examples:

Grammarly → Superhuman
KeepTruckin → Motive
TripActions → Navan
RealTimeBoard → Miro


But if you’re a startup, a clear name is better than a clever name in the early days.

Because people can immediately guess what category you might be in.

Which helps recall

B2B Influencer marketing  

I attended her live session at the AI x Marketing Summit in SF last week 

Interesting to see how influencer rates are starting to mirror the paid ads on each platform 

BUT, with the added advantage that they convert better, are more trustworthy and creates longer term evangelists for the brand 

$20 CPM on LinkedIn 
$5-15 on other platforms 

They run a whole influencer marketing program, testing multiple small / medium sized creators across several campaigns 

This works well for a brand like Gamma that has a prosumer gtm, with a great free product.
