I’ve held five PMM leadership roles — 2× Director, 2× VP, and Chief Strategy Officer — and over time, one truth became impossible to ignore:

The average PMM spends too much time in the wrong one. Strategic PMMs are selective.

Answer these questions to see where a problem fits, and how to prioritize it.

DELEGATION ZONE

- Could someone else do this just as well?
- Would skipping this have little to no business impact?
- Does this require little to no PMM judgement?

If yes, delegate or drop.

QUICK WINS

- Am I particularly good at solving this type of problem?
- Can this be completed quickly with minimal effort?
- Will it create a small but noticeable improvement?

If yes, do it quickly and move on.

SHARED WINS

- Would solving this improve key business outcomes?
- Is another team better positioned to lead this work?
- Would PMM's time be better spent partnering vs leading?

If yes, partner, don't own.

STRATEGIC LEVERS

- Will this materially shape direction or priorities?
- Is PMM uniquely qualified to solve this problem?
- Would the outcome be weaker without me involved?

If yes, prioritize aggressively.

The fastest way to become more strategic is not to just work harder. It's to ruthlessly filter what you work on.

If your research isn't landing, it's probably not about the data.
It's about something much bigger.

PMMs spend hours tracking patterns, pulling sources together, analyzing trends.

We get genuinely excited about our findings.

Then we present to product stakeholders or senior leadership.

And... crickets.

No one else seems remotely as excited as we are.

The problem? You're probably stuck in what I call the "observation zone."

Most PMMs present low-quality insights without even knowing it. They describe what happened, but they don't help people understand why it matters or what to do next.

There are three levels of insight quality:

LEVEL 1: OBSERVING

You're describing what happened. Sharing data, maybe a few trends.

"Our competitor updated their homepage."
"We have 10 customer support tickets on this feature."

These are just data points. The business doesn't know why they should care, so they divert their attention somewhere else.

This is where most PMMs get stuck.

LEVEL 2: INTERPRETING

Now you're connecting meaning to the data.

"Our competitor updated their homepage to emphasize AI. This, combined with other changes to their marketing and the launch of their new feature last week, signals a positioning shift we need to respond to."

"Those 10 support tickets all come from our priority customer segment and mention the same point of friction. We need to pay attention before it starts costing us renewals with our best customers."

When you apply meaning, you spark conversation. You give people something to react to.

But interpretation alone isn't enough to drive action.

Because now everyone will ask: "Okay, so what do we do about it?"

LEVEL 3: DIRECTING

This is where you propose a path forward.

"Based on the competitor shift, I recommend we update our homepage messaging by end of month. Here are three positioning angles we could test."

"I've mapped out two options to address the friction point: one quick fix, one longer-term solution. I recommend we start with the quick fix and revisit in Q2."

Three components make this work:

→ Shape options: Determine the potential paths forward.

→ Add a strong point of view: Present the path you recommend (and why).

→ Bring an activation plan: Show how to bring that path to life.

When you move out of observing, through interpreting, and all the way to directing...

That's when you present insights that get buy-in.

And that's the real difference between insights that get filed away and insights that drive decisions.

I used to set career goals:

"Get promoted to Director."
"Manage a team of 5."
"Become a Chief Strategy Officer."

Then I'd stress about things I couldn't control.

Would my boss leave?

Would there be budget cuts or layoffs?

It was exhausting.

But, at the recommendation of my executive coach, I shifted focus. Instead of chasing titles, I started building leadership habits.

And that's when things changed.

I couldn't control when I'd get promoted to Director. But I could control showing up to every strategy meeting with a clear point of view.

I couldn't control managing a team that didn't exist yet. But I could mentor junior marketers, even when it wasn't officially my job.

I couldn't control the timing of the VP opening. But I could write strategy memos that the CEO actually wanted to read.

The promotion to Director came (early!). The team followed. The VP role was created just for me.

Not because I set those as goals.
Because I built the habits that made me ready when the opportunity arrived.

What if, in 2026, instead of obsessing over outcomes you can't control, you started focusing on the behaviors you can.

Your habits are your future, one day at a time.

I used to think being busy meant being productive.

Turns out, I was just exhausted.

The shift happened when I stopped glorifying hustle culture and started protecting what actually mattered to me.

I've learned the habits that feel hardest to prioritize are usually the ones we need most. For me, that's prioritizing time to take real breaks throughout the day.

After engaging with the company via Genysys Group, I decided to join SecureALL as their full-time direct hire product marketing and management department leader. 

During this time, I led a variety of efforts to reposition the company as a visionary in the cyber physical security space from both a product marketing and product management perspective. 

From a product marketing perspective, I rebuilt the company's product marketing organization to incorporate best practices in core product marketing. Some of my accomplishments include:
•  Hiring / managing teams of external, internal employees regarding strategic product marketing initiatives such as messaging & positioning, planning / executing GTM strategies, influencer briefing, and others.
•  Owning full lifecycle major product launches leveraging resources inside / outside company

Head of Product Marketing

Genysys Group (Silicon Valley)

Founder, chief executive / evangelist, and principal business partner of a fractional marketing service provider targeting high / rapid growth B2X companies at all stages in their evolution.

In this role, I assumed the role of coach/advisor, department leader, or senior level team member to conceive, develop, and drive global marketing initiatives with a variety of industry leading, category defining, and visionary tech companies in a variety of industries (Networking, Enterprise Software, Security (Cyber-, Network, Data, Physical, Application/API), IOT / IIOT, Big Data, Business Intelligence / Analytics, FinTech, Mobile, Cloud).

MachEye is an AI/ML infused cloud-native augmented analytics software company that provides insights as interactive audio-visuals in conjunction with natural search and click-less intelligence. 

While working at MachEye, I acted as the company's first product (content) marketer. 

In this role,  I partnered with the company's Chief Business Officer and Marketing Manager to drive the following initiatives:
• Authored company’s first white paper positioning MachEye introducing augmented analytics which was also used in the company's early sales enablement, lead generation, and thought leadership efforts.
• Wrote a two-part blog series to establish / promote the company as thought leader related to Autonomous Intelligence,  Augmented Consumers and other relevant topics that were shared cross-functionally as well as with prospective customers and partners.

MachEye : Product Marketing

Arcadia Data is a visionary cloud-based visual analytics and business intelligence company that accesses/analyzes/visualizes data from Hadoop-based big data platforms (Cloudera, Hortonworks, MapR) and cloud based data stores such as Amazon S3. It was acquired by Cloudera in 2019. The company's unique data native approach incorporating technologies like ML and AI were instrumental in it being praised by analyst firms like Gartner and Forrester.

While working with Arcadia Data, I worked on operational thought leadership and product / content / developer marketing initiatives which successfully differentiated them from other BI / analytics companies and gaining recognition from multiple analyst firms (e.g. Gartner, Forrester)

In this role, I:
• partnered with fellow product marketers, product management as well as content marketing to author multiple assets (white papers, e-Books, knowledge base articles) which covered various topics of interest targeting personas such as business analysts, (citizen) data scientists, and others interested in big data analytics for a variety of industries such as cybersecurity
• created the company's initial competitive intelligence assets including SWOT diagrams, battle cards, and other materials that were used in sales enablement sessions, conversations with industry analysts, and executive briefings describing how company's products were superior to their competition resulting in increased MQLs and SQLs as well as winning multiple deals.

Arcadia Data : Product Marketing

First marketing executive for pre-seed Martech company focusing on social media amplification primarily targeting SMB and Mid-sized B2B Tech companies looking for a secure alternative to Buffer and VoiceStorm. Shortly after leaving the company, the company changed names and missions to provide individuals a way to improve their personal brand.

In my role, I partnered with the company's CEO as a GTM, thought leadership and market development expert where I conceived, managed, and executed various initiatives such as messaging/positioning/UVP development, pricing/packaging, sales tool / content development, market/competitive intelligence, alliance development and other efforts.

Marketing / GTM : Advo.Ninja

SecureALL Corporation is a visionary cybersecurity company and developer of the Guardian, the industry's first end-to-end cyber-physical security (IoT/IAM/ITAM) platform. I partnered with the company's executive team to conceive and execute a variety of corporate, go-to-market, and product-oriented initiatives:

In this role, I:
• Defined company's Ideal Customer Profile, personas (buyer, influencer) and corporate / product messaging and positioning used with all company assets
• Authored company's requirements (epics, stories, wireframes) for their flagship software application (SA Guardian)
• Designed / authored the company's first public website and collateral (data sheets, brochure) shared with potential customers and channel partners
• Sourced, evaluated, and recommended cloud service providers (AWS, GCP, Azure) to be used in MVP of Guardian Cloud
• Researched, evaluated, and selected Linux Distribution (CentOS) designated as OS to run  Guardian platform / appliance 
• Evaluated and shortlisted IHVs used to house Guardian hardware appliance 
• Assessed and selected infrastructure software (e.g. application server, database, version control, issue tracking, requirement management) used to manage development of Guardian software and firmware for all SecureALL products with CTO 
• Trained engineering organization fundamentals of Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) and how to customize firewall rules used with Guardian appliance.

I was also asked to manage a number of special projects at the request of the CEO:
• Optimized manufacturing workflow / processes for all hardware products sold by company
• Managed third party vendors responsible for core IT infrastructure (VPN, PBX, etc.)
• Researched sources for the Company's second, third funding rounds (Round B, C)

SecureALL Corporation : Senior Member of Staff (Inbound / Outbound Marketing) 

Intelesense Technologies develops next-generation wireless sensor devices as well as advanced data visualization, knowledge management and collaboration tools targeting markets such as educational institutions, research facilities, government (local, state, national), non-profit organizations, and companies requiring geospatial analytics and in-situ (real-time) project management.

While at Intelesense, I formed the company's first official marketing department. I managed a team of five individual contributors, managers, and contractors tasked with conceiving and driving inbound / outbound marketing efforts for all product lines sold by the company.

In this role, I:
• Redefined the company's branding & developed a new corporate web site and storefront
• Managed company's corporate communications strategy (public relations, social media)
• Established company's first formal product roadmap and launch plans for all of their products
• Launched Collaborate.org at Future in Review (FiRe), Com.Geo and other high profile events
• Participated in interviews with global media outlets and coached CEO regarding messaging / positioning
• Created companies first formal product marketing frameworks (messaging, positioning, personas, ICPs, UVP, USP)
• Developed sales tools and assets including presentations, videos, data sheets, FAQs and other docs used by CEO and partners for initial thought leadership / customer & partner acquisition efforts
• Created the company's first market / competitive intelligence function hiring a dedicated employee
• Organized company's first corporate communications efforts including public relations, social media, and influencer relations.

Intelesense Technologies : Head of Marketing

EMC Corporation developed information management and storage software systems. EMC was acquired by Dell in 2016.

While at EMC, I partnered across multiple organizations inside their Intelligent Information Group (IIG) to drive a variety of inbound / outbound marketing initiatives related to solutions for their Financial Services and Energy verticals:
• Partnered with solutions marketing, field marketing and creative team to develop assets & sales tools for their Energy Plant and Facility Management (EPFM) solution 
• Developed sales tools and hosted sales enablement sessions teaching field / channel account managers, and sales engineers the messaging / positioning for EPFM (200 attendees globally)
• Partnered with services marketing organization and vendor as part of the company's initial Account Based Marketing (ABM) efforts 
• Coordinated initial analyst relations efforts between IIG and IDC, Frost & Sullivan for their Energy solutions
• Managed collateral plan / campaign calendars documenting key milestones, deliverables for Energy, Financial Services solutions

EMC: Senior Marketing Manager 

Siperian is a visionary integrated and model-driven enterprise data management software platform that has been recognized as an industry leader by leading analyst firms like Gartner and Forrester. Siperian was acquired by Informatica in 2010.

While working at Siperian, I managed and worked on thought leadership, sales enablement, content development, competitive intelligence, and customer marketing efforts during the company's transition from being a niche CDI player to a visionary in the Multidomain Master Data Management space.

In this role I: 
• Partnered with product management to develop the messaging / positioning / unique value proposition that was used to establish a presence in new markets (broadcasting, consumer packaged goods, transportation) and gain dominance in the healthcare and financial services markets
• Created sales tools and collateral such as PPT decks, data sheets, white papers, customer case studies, and knowledge base entries by organizations across the company including sales, tech pubs, field solutions, customer support, as well as partners (ISVs, SIs) for their entire product line including Business Data Director (the industry's first proactive DG application)
• Collaborated with peers in product marketing and management group to create the roadmap for their entire product line
• Managed customer advocacy and marketing efforts including construction of customer database and authored over 20 case studies that were published on Siperian's website 
• Spoke at sales enablement sessions teaching company's sales force and partners key messaging / positioning for new features, opposition handling, as well as customer anecdotes used to teach customers about various use cases addressed by Siperian's product line
• Contributed to application used by J&J Healthcare Services to help them win Gartner's first MDM Excellence Award in 2008 and applications for a Finalist in 2009 (https://customerthink.com/johnson_johnson_health_care_gartner_mdm_award/)

Siperian : Senior Manager, Product Marketing

Obopay is a fintech pioneer that developed a mobile application that allows consumers and businesses to purchase, pay and transfer money through any mobile phone prior to the advent of Apple, Google and Samsung Pay.

In this role, I acted as the company's first marketing analytics leader, expanding the charter to cover the entire company, and managed two contractors:
• Conceived / developed the company's initial data management framework / infrastructure / roadmap
• Partnered with IT department to develop company's first data warehouse, dashboards, reports, and create other resources used enterprise-wide 
• Managed the company's web analytics application (Omniture) which was used by customer marketing group to develop acquisition and retention campaigns and monitor their effectiveness
• Led the company's first competitive intelligence efforts researching and reporting on competitors in space shared with executive team and product marketing departments

Obopay : Marketing Analytics

Cisco develops, manufactures and sells networking hardware, telecommunications equipment and other technology services and products. 

I initially joined the company's Foundation Data Services (FDS) group as a business analyst, but was quickly promoted to program manager representing FDS for a variety of corporate marketing initiatives.

In this role, I: 
• Developed requirements for internally developed data management applications (Customer Insight, Global Contact Repository, Marketing Operational Data Store) used to manage and store information regarding all visitors to Cisco.com globally
• Represented Corporate Marketing Organization regarding data enrichment effort used enterprise-wide
• Promoted and "sold" data applications to other business units (e.g. Cisco Network Academy, Linksys, Scientific Atlanta) 
• Led Foundation Data Services regarding portfolio management and prioritization efforts during QBRs
• Partnered with Market Intelligence group to produce a "Did You Buy Audit" increasing revenue by millions in USD worldwide by exposing potential customers lost in the purchase process

Cisco: Program Manager, Foundation Data Services

Product Marketing Alliance

Founded in March 2019, the Product Marketing Alliance has become  the world’s biggest product marketing community. Their Slack channel and meetups unite thousands of PMMs from all over the world and their mission is very simple: to promote and elevate the role of product marketing.

In my tenure as an ambassador to date, I have authored content for a variety of different offerings such as their PMM Hired program (one was turned into a video by Richard King!) and am a member of their coursework review committee.

Most recently, I became more involved as an ambassador and would love to connect with other PMMs either here in the SF Bay Area or around the world to share best practices in this highly dynamic field.

In early 2023, I officially became an Expert in Residence. In this role, I work with companies to help their marketing organizations with developing the skills they need to be better product marketers. To that end, I host workshops (virtual or in-person) where I teach these individuals best practices based on materials from the PMA as well as my own personal experiences.

Conceived and drove solution (product / portfolio) marketing, thought leadership, and content marketing efforts for a number of offerings sold by SAP SuccessFactors (SFSF) in conjunction with other SAP lines of business such as their Spend Management group (Ariba / Fieldglass), SAP SE, SAP Concur, and SAP Analytics Cloud. 

My deliverables included:
• Developed messaging/positioning, sales tools, assets, and collateral for solution designed to simplify full-cycle management for all workers (Total Workforce Management). 
• Updated sales tools and collateral for SAP's related to HXM portion of cloud-based ERP offering (RISE with SAP for HXM)  
• Coordinated efforts between SAP value advisory group and fellow solution team members to update messaging for the 2022 release of HCM value advisory paper
• Leveraged resources across ERP team, Concur and other business units to promote multiple workstreams in conjunction with SAP Intelligent Enterprise team for Intelligent Enterprises are Integrated Enterprises paper conceived by SAP SE business unit

Led regional and global product and marketing initiatives at market leading enterprise software companies.

1998-1999: Business Objects (acquired by SAP)
Part of marketing team that moved Business Objects into the "Internet age"
• Collaborated with corporate marketing org to release WebIntelligence v1, v2 to North America market
• Partnered with Extranet Business Development group to promote WebIntelligence as a revenue generator for customers in various industries (e.g. Healthcare, Insurance)
• Developed sales tools for products such as Rapid Deployment Templates, providing pre-packaged reports for ERP products offered by SAP, Baan, and Oracle.
• Spoke at events such as trade shows and high profile gatherings such as user groups and partner training events
• Led enterprise-wide marketing initiatives acting as Editor-in-Chief of Sales & Marketing Playbook Manager of Marketing War Room helping the company win multiple high profile / high value customers (deal size > 7 figures)

Principal technical marketing leader as part of company's shift from ETL developer to EPM vendor
• Developed demonstrations for Broadbase's EPM Suite

2000-2001: BEA Systems (acquired by Oracle in 2008)
• Managed global GTM team, product launch, and sales enablement efforts leading to largest deals on record for industry leading transaction manager / middleware product line (Tuxedo and WebLogic Enterprise)
• Spoke at executive briefings and represented e-Commerce Server division regarding product roadmap for business unit covering WebLogic Server, Tuxedo, and WebLogic Enterprise
• Participated in global user group events in EMEA, North America evangelizing Tuxedo, WebLogic Enterprise
