For years, I kept trying to “fix” my marketing.
New platform.
New ad.
New idea.
Same inconsistency.

And I’d find myself asking questions that weren’t helpful:

Is it the market?
The algorithm?

Here’s the part nobody tells you:

Most of the buyer’s journey happens where you can’t see it.
And that invisibility makes good owners doubt themselves.

It’s not that your marketing is broken.
It’s that you’re reacting to the final 10 percent of someone’s decision as if it’s the whole story.

When I finally understood that, the weight shifted.

I stopped expecting every lead to move the same way.
I stopped assuming slow weeks meant something was wrong.

I almost lost our first sales hire before he even started.

Here's what happened:

Two weeks before his start date, he asked a simple question:

"What's the onboarding plan?"

And I froze.

Because the honest answer was: "You'll shadow me for a few weeks and figure it out."

That's when I realized:

We didn't have a training system.
We had tribal knowledge trapped in three people's heads.

And if I couldn't clearly show someone how to succeed here, I had no business hiring them.

So we spent those two weeks building something we should have built years ago:

Week 1: I recorded everything I was already doing

I narrated as I worked. 12 videos. Under 10 minutes each.

Week 2: We built a path inside our CRM

We use Go High Level (not because it's perfect, but because our whole business runs in it).
Created a simple course: Pipeline Basics, Call Structure, KPIs That Matter.
Everything in one place. No hunting through Slack or Google Docs.

Day 1: He started without me

Logged in. Watched the videos. Took the assessment.
By lunch, he was making practice calls using our actual scripts.

I didn't teach him. The system did.

The part nobody talks about:

This isn't a "set it and forget it" thing.

Every coaching session, I record it.
Every role play, it goes back into the library.
Every mistake someone makes, we build a module to prevent it next time.

The system gets smarter every week.

And here's what changed:

Before: Every new hire took 6 to 8 weeks to ramp up (and needed constant hand-holding).

Now: New hires are revenue positive in 2 to 3 weeks. And I'm not in the room.

This week had everything — wins, chaos, and a few fires that reminded me just how unpredictable business can be.

We onboarded our 8th team member (welcome, William 👊), and for the first time, I didn’t feel buried by it. (yay - starting to fill the spaces in the office!)

Why? Because our systems, and my executive assistant, Taylor, made it feel easy.

Hiring someone new always exposes gaps. Missing videos. Unwritten SOPs. The steps you forgot existed.

The week opened with a ride in a Lamborghini at Circuit of the Americas, thanks to a mentor who is living at a level I’m working toward. It was a reminder I needed: get around people who are further ahead, who think bigger, and who show you by example what’s possible.

From there, the week shifted into deep strategic work. We mapped out multiple pathways to hit the 13.5-month goal, challenged our assumptions, and clarified what the future business needs to look like if it’s going to run without me.

A big part of the vlog is the system buildout:

That was a hard truth for me to swallow the first time I realized it.

I kept trying to fix things at the surface level.
New copy.
New graphics.
New ideas.
More posting.
More activity.

But the real issue wasn’t my marketing.
It was the way I was explaining the value behind what I did.

Here’s what I eventually learned:

People don’t buy activity.
They buy outcomes, clarity, and confidence.

And when your offer feels fuzzy to them, they don’t reject you —
they simply hesitate.

That alone can stall an entire business.

Once I understood that, I stopped chasing noise and got honest about my 4Ps:

Problem: Most owners feel stuck because nothing in their marketing feels predictable.
Promise: I help them build simple, clear systems that create visibility and consistent sales.
Path: We break it down one piece at a time — funnel, offer, CRM, follow-up, AI.
Proof: Real businesses using this approach reduce chaos and finally understand how growth works.

When I started speaking from that level of clarity, everything else aligned.
My content had direction.
My conversations got lighter.
People understood what I actually helped them achieve.

13 months from now, my parents retire from our family business.

Not "someday." Not "when we're ready."
December 2026. Hard stop.

That deadline changed everything.

Here's what I realized:
Without a forcing function, I was building a business that could run without me.
With a deadline, I'm building a business that must run without them.

The difference? Urgency kills perfectionism.

This is what we've done in the last 90 days:

Because if we can retire my parents in 13 months, we can help other owners do the same.

Onsite supporting a client as CISO. Security team lead walks into my office. Sets down his laptop. "We need to talk about password policies."

I lean back. "Which part? The one where users hate us for requiring 16 characters? Or the part where they write them on sticky notes anyway?"

He shakes his head. "Neither. I'm talking about why we're still treating passwords like they're Fort Knox when they're really screen doors."

Here's the brutal truth: Password complexity requirements are security theater. We force users to create P@ssw0rd123! and pat ourselves on the back. Meanwhile, that same password is sitting in twelve different breach databases because users recycle it everywhere.

The numbers don't lie. A 20-character passphrase like "correct horse battery staple" takes centuries to crack. P@ssw0rd123! takes minutes. But guess which one your policy probably requires?

I worked with a healthcare client last year. Their password policy was a masterpiece of complexity. Minimum 12 characters. Three character types. Changed every 90 days. No reuse for 24 cycles.

Result? Post-it notes everywhere. Password reset tickets through the roof. And when we ran a penetration test, we compromised 60% of accounts in two hours. Not because we're geniuses. Because humans are predictable when you make their lives miserable.

Here's what actually works:

First: Length Over Complexity
Require length, encourage passphrases. "MyDogLovesToChaseSquirrels2024" beats "Tr!ck#123" every time. It's easier to remember, harder to crack, and users don't need a decoder ring.

Second: Unique Passwords Matter More Than Strong Ones
The strongest password in the world is useless if it's in a breach database. Focus on uniqueness. Deploy password managers. Make it easier to do the right thing than the wrong thing.

Third: Stop Forced Rotations
NIST changed their guidelines years ago. Forced password changes don't improve security. They encourage predictable patterns. Summer2024! becomes Fall2024! becomes Winter2024! Attackers know this dance.

Fourth: Layer Your Defenses
Passwords alone are like a deadbolt on a glass door. Add MFA. Enable conditional access. Monitor for suspicious activity. Make passwords just one layer, not your only defense.

A manufacturing client switched to our passphrase approach last quarter. Support tickets dropped 20%. Security improved. Users stopped hating IT. A clear win for security, support, and user satisfaction.

The goal isn't uncrackable passwords. It's reasonable security that humans can actually follow. Because the strongest security control in the world is worthless if everyone works around it.

What's the most illogical password rule you're still enforcing?

Manufacturing company texts me. "$400,000 vanished from our operating account. The bank says we authorized it."

They had. Sort of.

Thursday afternoon. Their accounts payable manager gets a call. "This is fraud prevention from [major bank]. We've detected suspicious activity on your business account. We need to verify your identity to protect your funds."

"For security, we need you to confirm your ACH token code."

She read it. Out loud. Over the phone.

Within 4 hours, $400,000 was gone. Three separate transfers to accounts they'd never seen. Money they needed for payroll. For suppliers. For keeping people employed.

Here's the brutal truth: That wasn't their bank calling. It was a vishing attack: voice phishing. And their employee did exactly what she'd been trained to do: be helpful, be responsive, protect the company's assets.

Except no one trained her that banks never call asking for token codes. Security awareness training was always delayed for next years’ budget. 

This isn't about blame. That accounts payable manager was competent, experienced, trusted with financial access for good reason. She got socially engineered by professionals who do this every day.

The criminals had done their homework. LinkedIn profiles. Company website. Previous data breaches. They knew enough to sound legitimate. They created urgency without panic. They were patient, professional, even sympathetic.

Your employees with financial access (ACH tokens, wire authorities, admin credentials) they're not cybersecurity experts. They're accounting professionals. Operations managers. People focused on keeping your business running.

But they're also your highest-value targets.

Three things that could have prevented that $400,000 loss:

1. Clear protocol: "Banks never ask for tokens over the phone. Ever. If someone calls claiming to be the bank, hang up and call them back at the number on your statement."

2. Verification procedures: Any request for sensitive information triggers a callback to a known number. Not the number they give you. The one you already have.

3. Regular training scenarios: Not boring compliance videos. Actual practice. "Here's what a vishing call sounds like. Here's how they build trust. Here's when to stop talking."

The recovery? Looks unlikely. Banks treat authorized transactions differently than fraud. Insurance coverage varies. Legal remedies take years.

That manufacturing company now has strict voice verification protocols. Every employee with financial access has been retrained. They test their procedures monthly.

But that $400,000? Most of it's gone forever.
